I have a mate of mine who is a passionate Roosters fan and he is happy that they have let him go and saved the money for more Dynamic Spencer Leniu

I’m not defending Lodge as I don’t like him and would prefer he didn’t come to Manly, however in the interests of the truth, the Roosters didn’t save the money for Leniu because he had already signed. Lodge was genuinely prepared to stay for less at the Chooks because (a) he is aware of the narrative around again jumping between clubs and (b) he’d started to play really good footy again at a really strong organisation. The issues started when JWH decided to go around again and that was the money set aside to extend Lodge. Something had to give.

Would I prefer Leniu at Manly? Of course!
Do I rate Lodge? Not overly. Did the Roosters initially decide to let him go because he is a trouble maker? No. Did his form drop when he was told he wouldn’t have a deal for next year? Yes.

I have a mate who gets a bit of solid mail about the Roosters from time to time. He said Lodge's departure from the Cocks was all to do with salary cap and not because of anything untoward. Apparently, Matthew was told he would be offered a two year extension at the end of last season. Then he got injured and Politis bought Spencer Leniu before extending Daniel Tupou and JWH.

Lodge was willing to take a decent haircut to remain at Bondi, thinking it would help the club extend JWH, whom everyone thought was retiring at seasons end. When the Rooster reneged he continued to train etc but his form did dip along with most other players in their squad. He was p1ssed off about how things went down, but that isn't a crime.

He was unhappy with his brother in law not being retained for a start, then his father in law had a falling out with the owner and was sent packing to the Dolphins. From that point on, Lodge was a cancer at the club with his attitude, at trainings was trying to over ride the coach and tell guys this is how it should be done etc, and when the owner finally called him out on it, they got into a heated situation, which led to the Warriors being happy to pay out the remaining 18 months of his contract, just so he wouldn’t be around the group. They were light on front rowers when they sent him packing as well

Kevin Walters couldn’t wait to get him out of the joint in Brisbane as well, so with all the excuses that people want to make, there are multiple people now who couldn’t cop him and his attitude

While he was without a club last year, his father in law was leaking information to buzz (think the text messages between Ponga and the Dolphins which ended up in the media) in exchange for pumping up Lodges tyres about what a top guy he is, and less than a year later he is on the outs again. There is too much smoke around this guy for there not to be a fire

On the weekend he ran for 200m, broke 12 tackles, made one line real, and scored a try. As a Manly supporter who wants to see my team win, I have every toe and finger crossed in the hope he will be selected today ahead of Woods. My expectation is for Matthew to bring that form and aggression to first grade, ensuring Woods NEVER wears a Manly jersey again. If that happens I'll be happy.

Lodge is there to play football. He's not there to share in the niceties of Devonshire tea in a social garden party with our family. Yes, dreadful behaviour in a social context in the past and we can be deeply concerned by that behaviour. That's for the court to decide, as it did with Manese. But that has nothing to do with his skill on the football field. Let's assess him on those specific grounds. If he fails to perform, or fails to behave correctly, in the context of that role, then assess his value to the side.

Do we dismiss Van Gogh's skill with the brush, because of his mad behaviour. Do we dismiss Rolf Harris's skills as an entertainer and painter, because of his criminal actions. Do we dismiss Polanski's skill with film such as Chinatown, because he had sex with an under aged girl. Baby and the bathwater come to mind. Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, so to speak. I think we can appreciate a person's skill while opposing his behaviour in other areas. We're not having to socialise with Lodge. We're just seeking to appreciate, or not appreciate, his skill on the field.

Thats why you don't offer him a long term deal and make him accountable for his performances. I reckon he's got the ability to be a good player for us, I agree with what you are saying and it's a risk but what have we got to lose ?? At the moment we are a dyed in the wool mediocre football team so what are we really risking ?? We lack go forward or real fear factor hardness in our pack and this guy brings some of both, an area of which our current pack are lacking.
