Matt Ballin for coach?

I reckon the Manly DNA coach stuff is massively overstated.

Sure if given the the option I would prefer to have it in them.

But the two guys commonly cited in this Bozo and Des were all time great coaches.

Has there been a mediocre Manly "DNA" coach that has won us a premiership?
I may be wrong, but I believe all our premiership coaches were ex Manly players - Ron Willey, Frank Stanton, Bozo, Des. That sample would suggest we need a “DNA” guy to win a comp. It’s the Manly Way.

I cant comment on relative coaching abilities of the Willey and Stanton but I do know Fulton and Des are "hall of fame" type guys.

My point being that we just need a top tier coach regardless of their background. Easier said that done i know.

That would mean that our tight-ass owners would need to pay top dollar for a coach. I don't think it will happen.

I have always been surprised at the lack of coaches in waiting out there - now that Ryles is gone are there any other next big things out there?

You are correct.

Plus all five coaches who took Manly to a first grade grand final, but never won one, were Manly/ex-Manly players:

Wally O’Connell, Captain-coach, 1951 (he was injured and did not play in that game);
Ken Arthurson, 1957 and 1959;
George Hunter, 1968;
Ray Ritchie, 1982; and
Geoff Toovey, 2013.

Of course Willey, Fulton and Hasler also coached losing GF sides. Fulton had the worst record on paper, only two wins from five attempts, not including the 1980 GF loss at the Roosters. But the great man was the only coach to take Manly teams to three consecutive GFs. A great achievement in itself.

Meanwhile Stanton came away with two wins, a draw, no losses. So maybe Frankie was our greatest coach.

Willey had great credentials too. His Manly teams never missed the finals and remain the only Manly squad to go back to back. Although Hasler’s record of pulling a team up by the bootstraps from 2004, onto premiership glory in 2008 and 2011, makes him my greatest Manly coach to date, notwithstanding the events at the end of 2011.

Thanks for all that. We have such a rich history of success achieved by true Manly people, including great Manly coaches and the greatest administrator, Arko. I fear we are getting further and further away from the true Manly DNA that has brought us so much success.

While Penn is the owner we aren't winning a premiership.
He doesn't want to spend what is required, its just a ego thing to him with look at me I own a footy team.

Having an owner with deep pockets and passion is what is required, If Uncle Nick was a Manly fan and involved with us since the 70s we would be in a complete different position and would have won more premierships.

An owner willing to spend big on building a culture behind the scenes we could attract a coach like Cleary and have system similar to Penrith.
We are a Kia of the car world, cheap that gets the job done but can't compete with the top brands.
