HUGH Lamrock has always marvelled at the feats of Sea Eagles maestro Cliffy Lyons.
And on Saturday evening the Newport Breakers rugby five-eighth will do something he never dreamt possible — marking the football magician and trying to contain his sublime ballskills.
Lyons is making a comeback alongside former Sea Eagles NRL stars John Hopoate and Mark Bryant for the Avalon Bulldogs in their hybrid rugby against the Breakers at Rat Park.
“It will be pretty exciting playing against some of these guys we watched growing up,” said Lamrock, a 26-year-old carpenter.
While Lyons may now be 54, Lamrock knows he will have to be on the alert all game.
“I’m sure he still a few tricks up his sleeve, we’ll definitely keep an eye on him,” Lamrock said.
Lyons was talked into playing by Bulldogs’ coaching director Gavin Sheehan.
“I didn’t think about it when I said ‘yes’ and then I went ‘oops’,” Lyons laughed.
“I’m expecting a lot from the young fellas- doing my tackling and doing my running. I’ll kick the ball and they can chase it.”
Lyons still keeps himself in good nick and his ballwork sharp by playing touch football.
His last proper game was four years ago with the Narraweena A grade side.
And he has some rugby experience playing in the 2010 Golden Oldies World Cup.
“You’d rather be out there playing than watching it,” he said.
Kick off is 6.15pm following the rugby trials between Warringah, Manly and Norths.
