There is nothing in the universe that can cause you suffering. People and other living beings can attack your five senses, but it is entirely up to you how you react.

If someone is yelling at you, you can just say to yourself “hearing… hearing”. If someone is physically assaulting you, you can just say “pain… pain”. You can mindfully examine these experiences without getting angry or upset.

If you train hard enough through meditation, you will be able to see every situation clearly and understand something for what it is.

 
Interestingly, this appears to me somewhat near some elements of classical Stoicism, particularly as taught by Epictetus to give a person tools for enduring the most difficult circumstances (Epictetus was a freed slave, so in a very real way when he first practiced Stoicism he could not control even if he lived or died). I wonder if there is any acknowledged link in mindfulness theory?
