Monday Buzz: Suburban ground boost for NRL fans

If wannabe premier Michael Daley wins next month's state election it will be a victory for NRL fans who love consuming their footy out of our traditional old suburban grounds.

The opposition leader has vowed to abandon the Liberal Party's $1.3 billion spend on Allianz and ANZ Stadium to spend more money on hospitals and schools.

And while he has stopped short of guaranteeing funding to refurbish the likes of Brookvale, Campbelltown, Leichhardt, Shark Park and Kogarah, he said: Families must never be denied the opportunity to sit on the hill at a suburban field and watch the action up close as two NRL teams go head to head.

Surely that's better than sitting in some huge and lifeless stadium where, after paying for your entry, you can't afford a beer for yourself and pies for the kids

There's no question this city needs one major-event, 80,000-seat stadium to host NRL grand finals, State of Origin, Socceroos internationals, Liverpool, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.

One, not two. We have to keep up with other major cities or well lose big events.

The soon-to-be-opened Bankwest Stadium will be worth every cent of the $300 million spend.

Yet the state of our suburban grounds are a disgrace and something needs to be done about it.

Were raising this issue again today because it's February and the playing surfaces at Brookvale and Kogarah ovals are already considered too dangerous to even host NRL trials.

What will they be like by mid-winter and how can you guarantee members, who have already paid for their season tickets, that more games won't be transferred this season?

Building a $36 million high-performance facility and a 3000-seat grandstand at Brookvale is hardly the answer.

The Sea Eagles can't even do ball work there. And they will have to catch a team bus to Narrabeen for skills training.

Every fan survey over the past 10 years overwhelmingly supports the traditional old venues.

We are not Melbourne and we are not the AFL.

The bosses of TV networks Channel 9 and Fox Sports also prefer the suburban ground atmosphere to beaming a backdrop of tens of thousands of empty blue seats into our homes.

Suburban football grounds are at the heart of communities right across our great city Daley said.

Even when the world is changing before our eyes, we can still identify with our local footy team.

In recent years, Sydney has grown at a breakneck pace & sometimes it seems barely recognisable anymore. And this is one reason why our local communities are becoming more important than ever. Our neighbourhoods are where we can still feel at home.

And for me, there is something very special about taking my kids to a game of local footy

Whatever happens, there needs to be a long-term plan to save suburban grounds. They all need TLC. They need to be safe for players and comfortable for fans.

Halle bloody lullea
My vote is in.
Surely Rothf*cked didn't write that.
Didn't read the link just the post.

Michael Daley is not going to help up with Brookvale, no votes for Labor up on the northern beaches. I find it amusing that his policy of not re-building the SFS and the impact this decision is going to have on the clubs and codes who use this facility. We are already behind Melbourne when it comes to quality stadia and we need something to be built on the SFS sight. Interesting times ahead.

Yes I agree I can’t see Daley giving us a dime when he can pork barrel seats in the inner west, Penrith and Kogarah where they are a chance of winning

Agreed. I’m not keen on all the money being chucked at the SFS (it was never as bad as they were making out, and could’ve used a minor facelift, not a full knockdown/rebuild) however now they’ve bulldozed the joint the horse has well and truly bolted on that one. The funds will have already been committed, regardless of who wins the election - and good luck in court if you try to call the whole thing off, when contracts have already been signed, the winning tenderers have already employed extra staff to get it done etc.

There needs to be a stadium on that site anyway. The issue is that they should’ve just revamped the one they bloody had!

I'm not even from Sydney and in my almost 44 years on this planet I've probably spent no more than 2 months in Sydney, if that. Yet even I know that much.

If the SFS was as bad as they were claiming (concrete cancer etc), then surely OHS&W and public safety would have seen too it that the ground was either greatly reduced in capacity to reduce any potential risk, or they wouldn't have allowed any events to be held there at all.

Yet they still played rugby internationals there, still played Socceroo internationals, NRL, Super Rugby, A-League and other events like concerts. And all with the full 45,000 seated capacity in use.

Personally I think it was a lot of smoke and mirrors all designed to keep the politicians connected with the SCG Trust happy. A new stadium at Moore Park to replace the SFS sounds like one giant conflict of interest.

Not unusual for this government...

"And while he has stopped short of guaranteeing funding to refurbish the likes of Brookvale, Campbelltown, Leichhardt, Shark Park and Kogarah . . ."
That says it all.
The Labor Party don't care about electorates north of the Harbour Bridge, and while I am opposed to the knock-down of Alliance Stadium and reckon the Liberal Party have made a lot of mistakes they are, unfortunately, the only viable option in this State election if you live on the Northern Beaches. At least they know where the Northern Beaches are!
Australian politics is in a sad state. Even a seemingly 'Independent' like Zali Steggall is being backed by the ratbag lefties of Get-Up.

"The bosses of TV networks Channel 9 and Fox Sports also prefer the suburban ground atmosphere to beaming a backdrop of tens of thousands of empty blue seats into our homes."

Is this a true statement? ... I thought the broadcasters preferred the big Stadii used FRi, Sat and Sunday because they can leave a lot of equipment there ... wiring etc, ... rather than set up the whole box and dice at the suburban grounds ??

Yes it is correct I understand- very costly for them to go to suburban grounds.

They probably were working with a design factor of safety of about 8000 Roosters fans so they were happy to continue with the stadium operating. However Freedom of Information act should have allowed anyone (looking at Journos and the State opposition here) to review the business case/funding model and the exact information to what are the specific issues that require an entire stadium to be bulldozed and replaced with a new one. It must have been catastrophic and then would come the question as to why the stadium wasn't built to suit the environment in which it is located, loadings etc in the first place?

Whatever way you look at this it's not transparent and seems like overkill to replace a stadium that has possibly 3-4 sellouts a year (none of them relating to the Roosters mind you).

I wonder what a structural condition report of Brookvale Oval would read like?

If anyone believes Labor they are crazy , likewise if you believe Liberal you’re just as bad and if you believe Miss Stegal then you need admittance to the asylum.

Politicians are all about getting elected and staying in a cushy job and very little to do with what’s best for their constituents!!

Sad state of affairs really.

Rothfield changes his tune on so many issues, on seemingly a weekly basis.

Zero credibility.

Agree totally. I can well remember Rothfield only a year or two ago leading the charge saying teams like Manly had NO FUTURE at suburban grounds and we should shift all our matches to the city stadiums or perish.

Assuming anybody is silly enough to keep employing him, he'll flip flop the other way again next year or two and have us playing at Homebush.

The word "opportunistic" doesn't even begin to describe Rothfield.

You want to stop pre-election promises turning into post-election memories ?

Write them into law.

If you make a promise, you submit it in writing to an independent body and if it's not delivered, you're dismissed and you have to repay all the money you earned or spend time in jail.

That'll shorten (no pun intended but a good one any way) them up in a big way and at least make them think before they open their traps and let the diarrhoea start running out.
