On this day in history

A memorable grand final day but as also has been mentioned , just part of a dramatic and very commendable Manly team effort and performance over that historical and probably never to be repeated two and a half weeks or so for the club . The Sharks actually outplayed and beat Manly two weeks earlier in a qualifying match and were a formidable side but eventually with just immense determination , resilience , playing ability and skill , also displayed in this match . the Sea eagles finally prevailed in the Tuesday re play. Just remember on the Saturday G F day , thinking that Wombat Eadie could be the difference , and his goal kicking and devastating tackle on the late and great Sludge Rogers were important and Eadie did cut loose big time in the replay . Winger Tom Mooney went close to scoring to give Manly an edge but just like Manly's previous lead up matches it was just a very tough and hard fought contest , I remember that Arko and ever trying to seek and find a winning edge for Manly, bought in a high ranking military and battle experienced officer into the Manly dressing room during the hard and challenging fortnight to lift and motivate the wounded and brave Sea Eagles and this seemed to help and to have served the purpose intended . Always will also remember the enthusiastic and heartening vocal cheering and support from the Manly fans at the ground that day , really inspiring and apparently including some present Silver tail members . Anyway debatable whether this was the best ever Manly G F side and in the playing ability sense but in terms of shear raw courage , staying power , tenacity and including general playing ability , that Manly team will probably never be matched .

I am biased!! To me this is our greatest ever team and best premiership win!! This team went through so much to win in 1978 and it was the pinnacle of a team that won four premierships in 7 years and was the envy of the league. I started supporting the team in 1975 and for a kid it was a magical time to support the Sea Eagles. Legendary players like my hero Wombat Eadie, Bomb thrower, Max Krillich, Igor Randall, Ian Martin, Johny Gibbs, Steve Martin and so many more. That team supplied seven players for the Kangaroo tour that year.

The Grand final was a tense game. The Sharks were fresh and looked fitter and stronger for most of that game but they were up against a team with such a strong will and desire. It could have gone either way to be honest. The replay was all Manly, tough, composed and in the first half they blew the fishies away and defended that lead and won a memorable premiership.

The Sheridan stand rocked that day and my earliest and happy memories of watching Manly were in that old grand stand at the SCG. Wonderful times for thoses of us lucky to be there!!!
Sheridan stand brings back such great memories for me, no more than the Leagueathon of 1977. Three games of footy at the SCG, with Manly the second game vs Parramatta. Must of been around April as my dad took me there for my birthday. As was the way back then, my dad just left me on the steps of the Sheridan stand, while he went off elsewhere. Due to the number of teams playing, Manly were working out of some rooms underneath the Sheridan stand. Goldie Walker scored a try right on full-time and we won 27-15. All the big guns had to walk right past me to get back to the rooms. Can remember it just like yesterday, much like the try Larry Corowa scored in the first game when he beat each player on the opposition at least twice to score a 80 metre try.

I have great memories of this day in 1978. There was over 44,000 at the SCG on that windy Sunday to see the 3 games, The Balmain Tigers, upset Wests Magpies and I remember Corowa streak way to score the tries. He was poetry in motion when he ran. Manly were up next and for an hour we belted them and led 22-2 before they made a comeback and got to with 7 points before Goldie finished them off and we prevailed 27-15. I remember the third game where the Bulldogs buried Sounths. The League were smart back then and I would love to see an event like that now on a Sunday arvo at the SCG and have three Sydney derbies bakc to back, The Sheridan Stand experience was a MUST for any young Manly supporter and the days we spent there in the 70s and the early 80s before they tore down the Sheridan Stand were amazing.

My favourite memories of the stand are the 76 prelim final against Canterbury, where Bozo kicked a field goal to get us to the grand final. Our semi final replay win against the whingers in 1978 and the subsequent wins over Wests and the grand final replay abgainst the Sharks. priceless mempries. I remember Whale cooking a sausage sizzle in the 83 major semia against the whingers, Mouse dancing to the tune of Zorba the Greek in the 82 major semi final. The booming voice of Lyall Roberts who would yell out the letters.

The chants that were unique to the Manly supporters club like, whos Australias number 1 who plays for the best team, GRAHAM EADIE to the tune of of the Mickey Mouse theme song. Super Max, every time there was a scrum. Parra are whingers!! Warringah clap clap and later on The fibros song that we used to sing that pissed off Masters and the Westies. I am so grateful that I was able to experience that era. I will never forget what that time meant, Manly were the pride of the league and were the envy of the competition. It is when our rivalry with Parra became heated and the dislike I have for them remains to this day as a result of that era.

Great times!!!

I remember rushing home from school to watch the Tuesday replay. Absolutely smashed them.
Same.
Mum gave me a note to get out of sport.
The only subject I was good at.
But had to take one for the team.
I listened to Frank Hyde's call kicking a footy in the backyard.
Waiting to watch the replay.
The best !!!!

Our 'decade of dominance' with the likes of the Snake, Killer, Gifty, Robbo, Choc, Skivy, Ox, DCE, Wolfman, Foz, Kitey, Beaver, Kingdog etc was a great time to be a Sea Eagles fan.

The mid-90's was good too with Tooves, Cliffy, Tezza, Ridgey, Spud, Cement, Beaver, Garts, Kid Kosef and the rest, except for 2 games.....

The 80's weren't bad but with the talent we had (Womat, Rowdy, Fatty, Bowie, Phil Blake, Des, Cliffy, Crusher, Ribot, Snoz, Williams etc) we really should have won more than once. Still, no one can take away the fact that we won the last Grand Final to be played at the SCG 😉

But you really can't go past the teams of the 70's can you (sadly before my time, but I have all of our GF wins on DVD or video). I mean, we dominated the 70's winning 4 premierships. Players like Freddy Jones, Eadie, Fulton, Gartner, Randall, Krilich, Branighan, Mooney, Max Brown, Stephen Knight, Ian Martin, Mal Reilly, Phil Lowe, Kenny Irvine and yes, even Zorba.....all legends of the game coached by other legends in Ron Willey and Frank Stanton. And running the show? Arko The Godfather, the best damn football administrator of any code this country has seen.

You know something? Its great to be a Sea Eagles fan :rock::rock:

On this day in 1976 our mighty Sea Eagles take on the scum from the west in their 1st GF appearance.
By now we had been in multiple GFs and while they had entered the competition in 1947, as did we, it had taken the perennial losers 29 years to get there.
In a tough, incredibly tense battle, our Sea Eagles heroes once again prevailed to win our 3rd premiership to the tune of 13-10.
The match had some great features like Neville Glover corner, the flying wedge and Terry Randall breaking Higgys cheekbone.

Apologies. Was it '78 ? Doesn't matter, all my memories (obviously not that good) of the SCG was from the Sheridan stand. 75/76 series against the Windies reminds me of a time when I actually had some interest in cricket.

Probs 78 if Goldie walker was in maroon and white!

The 76 decider and certainly another tense and gripping contest . Again like 78 , Manly were beaten in the preliminary final and had to do it the hard way , then getting past the Dogs to qualify for the Big one . Wombat Eadie"s goal kicking got Manly home [ 5 goals ] but the whole Manly team were very competitive and determined that day also . Two very tough and aggressive forward packs, but Manly had a brilliant back line and especially with Fulton , Eadie , Gartner and Alan Thompsen leading the way . The flying wedge ,what a weird and really not permissible innovation by the Eels at the time . Three Poms in the Manly line up Lowe , "knocker " Norton and Stephens , and far from being soft , all developed into quite competitive and battle hardened players during their time with the Sea Eagles .

Mariano Rivera walked off the field for the last time.
Greatest of all time.

The one and only Manly Incomparable Immortal was " The Greatest of all time "

Everybody knows I am the man
I control the game with the palm of my hand
Ain't nobody in the world better than me
I am the one everybody wishes they could be.
I am the greatest ever and Immortal
I am the man of all men with no mistake
I am the real thing others are the fake.
I walk with a purpose and grace
any situation I get into I've always got an ace.
They put me on the highest of pedestals for I am
The greatest. Let it be known right now no other can Ever take my place. I stand tall with what I have achieved
The Greatest ever Robert Fulton

My recollections of that G F win for Manly . Almost heat wave conditions. Cliffy weaving his magic . Kevin Ward playing a blinder after just arriving from an English autumn . Bozo Fulton"s shrewd use of Sub . Paul Shaw to run from dummy half through some tired Raiders forwards . Rowdy Shearer [ an old team mate of mine actually at a regional club level before he hit the big time ] playing a solid game from full back . A proud captain on the day in Fatty Vautin . I still think that Manly should have won more titles in the Eighties with some of the quality teams that they had but this 87 side was also a quality team , very deserving winners and of course were good enough to secure one title for the Sea Eagles from that 80"s decade .

I recently rewatched the 87 gf win. We bombed about 5 tries, it could have been a 40 nil scenario.

Yeah I put it on at 3 o'clock to commemorate the event and we sure bombed a few.
I think the tactics that day were to run the raiders off their feet, we played with such pace and a lot of errors came from that.
Plus Mick Stone penalised the tripe out of us.
And Cliffy plays better every time I watch it.
