Player Ratings - Round 12

HoldenV8

Journey Man
The 15-12 score says to those who didn't see the game that we were close to winning. The reality is that we really weren't.

Some of these are going to sound a bit harsh, but it is what it is.

Brendan Elliot 2/10 - Complete non-event in attack and a bad fumble on our line led to the try that put the game out of reach. All he offered tonight was at least he can catch bombs.

Jorge Taufua 6/10 - Jorge was good tonight and his runs were pure quality. Pity it was wasted. His biggest drawbacks are a slow as a wet week play the ball and that he is just as slow to turn and chase.

Dylan Walker 7/10 - Easily looked the most dangerous Manly player with the ball tonight.....when Cust gave it to him that is.

Reuben Garrick 3/10 - The kid has pace and is a very good goal kicker, but his defence kinda sucks and his hit ups lack any penetration because he usually gets mauled by the opposition.

Abbas Miski 6/10 - Can't recall him doing anything wrong, but he got hardly any decent opportunities.

Cade Cust 4/10 - Oh sure, he was good for 5 minutes, but the other 75 was an absolute $hitfest.

Kane Elgey 1/10 - $hithouse kicking game. $hithouse passing game. $hithouse defence and all but zero organisation skills. Stunk up the joint more than the abbatoirs on a hot summer day. I'd rather see Walker back in the halves before LG again, and I think Walker should never again play in the halves. The past two weeks have been the perfect opportunity for him and he's failed miserably.

Addin Fonua-Blake 9/10 - AFB was immense and laid a great platform. Unfortunately neither of our halves played anywhere near well enough to exploit it.

Api Koroisau 5/10 - Api wasn't too bad, but it was more average to OK than good. With such an inexperienced spine tonight, Api should have done a lot more to take charge of the game. Fainu did, but Api really didn't.

Martin Taupau 6/10 - Ran strong when on, but errors hurt. A better pass could have seen Jorge score basically untouched. Hopefully his injury is just a knock to the knee and not something that will see him join the injured list.

Joel Thompson 7/10 - His first ever first grade game as a captain. He played well, but most of his team mates didn't.

Curtis Sironen 8/10 - Siro's best game of the year by far. Tried to lead from the front tonight, but didn't have many followers.

Corey Waddell 5/10 - Waddell has gone well so far this year, but I don't think Jake has to worry about losing his starting spot. Ran OK tonight for 127 metres, but his defence let him at crucial times.

Manase Fainu 8/10 - Almost out before it started with an accidental head clash with Marty breaking his nose in the warmup, but when he came on he almost transformed the team with his crisp passing, running and all-round energy. How Fisher-Harris wasn't penalised or put on report for deliberately dropping his knee into Manase's already broken nose when he was on the ground is a joke.

Jack Gosiewski 4/10 - Average night at best. Apparently you can be sin binned by being slapped in the back of the head, because that's what happened to Jetski. Got slapped, got 10 in the bin.

Taniela Paseka 5/10 - In his limited time he actually looked OK. Makes me wish he got more game time.

Lloyd Perrett N/A - Wasn't used.

Like I said, this may sound harsh but other than a certain few we were crap at Penrith tonight and a better team would have beaten us by a lot more. No if's, no but's and the scoreline really did flatter Manly. Lets hope that Tom is back and fully fit for next weekend against the Cows and that both Jake and DCE get through Origin unscathed because without them as well as Parker and Croker we looked like lame ducks.

In saying all that, its becoming obvious that the injuries and player outs for things like Origin are starting to take their toll on this side. We've been living a charmed live with the back ups so far this year, but if we are to contend we definitely need our best side on the park, otherwise we're just making up the numbers despite the fact that we have improved over last year.

Best prop in the game by lengths. They are raving about Klemmer at Knights now. This bloke eats him. If Marty had his desire he’d be just as good but just seems to drop off at times during a year. As a combination there is no better starting props in comp.

Agree 100 per cent with the ratings and comments.

I wasn’t a great fan earlier this year but couldn’t help thinking tonight watching us get rag dolled a lot in the backline ( except Dylan) how much we miss Sulis damaging runs. That no name panther backline buried us defensively. Elliot Garrick and Elgey just seem to get smashed every time. Hard to get momentum. Suli gives you that.

A fair summation I’d say.

We’ll get better with a few stars back , add Jurbo, Turbo and Cherry back in, and young Suli and if we can keep them on the park we’ll be there or close to it in the finals.

It’s 2005 all over again.

Elliot was way better than 2,a mistake at fullback is usually glaring and catastrophic, hard to be great in attack when opposition is defensively monstering our forwards.Cust was way better than a 4,he will partner DCE for sure(should).Taupau was garbage, when the panthers forwards were hitting he did not look like he wanted to be there.Siro was a 9,he was outstanding.Gosiewski was way better than a 4,he went hard and made an impact, dumb tackle yeah, but to say a guy runs into the fray is ridiculous when he made the tackle.Paseka was good and deserves a chance.

Yep to me Elliott was ok aside from that one error which was a bad bounce. He made that break near their line early and was about to slip a pass to two unmarked players when he was ankle tapped and lost his balance. I actually like JetSki, yes he is not the sharpest tool in the shed but he is 100% effort and is versatile. I agree Taupau whilst clocking up reasonable metres was largely ineffective and those two errors were costly. Mid way through the first half AFB looked gassed however he got a second win and was unbelievable in the second half.

Not sure if walker earned a 7, he had opportunities and didn’t really take any of them, too interested in passing the ball instead of pushing himself to run and score, or staying down playing for penalties that were never going to be given because they weren’t worthy to be given

Agree too much sideways running.

I'm not going to knock you for your opinion because like anyone, you're entitled to give it, but the only things you said that I agree with is that Paseka was good in his limited time last night, and Siro could have been a 9 instead of an 8.

Otherwise, I stand by what I said.

No offence mate, but that is a pretty obvious statement as I was responding to your post.We obviously disagree.... 😉

Just on Elliots fumble on the line leading to the try ..... his intention and thinking was good ... he pulled up short and tried to pull the ball back into his body to save himself going over the line and conceding a dropout ..... but his execution let him down ... pulls it off it was a great play ... miss it and you're a mug .... that's how you gain experience, next time I am sure he will take the safe option ..

Your right on Jorge if he could get up and play the ball quicker he would be getting 9
At one stage the I thought he fell asleep when he got tackled maybe the hair weighs him down
Taupau and AFB Made good metres but gee I’d like to see the come from a bit of a run up not so much flat footed and more one after another don’t think we see enough of it for 2 big guys that can eat the metres

Didnt Jetski slap Luai first, then turned & walked away, so Luai slapped him from behind?

Anyway, agree with the opening post pretty much but think Elliott deserves more than 2.

The thing about us now is that despite looking flat the past 2 games, we haven't given up & allowed cricket scores against us.

Last year the Titans & Penrith would have racked up 40 or more against us, so at least the boys are still putting in defensively.

No team has run rings around us yet this season.

JetSki is a reserve grader who plays with passion. He is ordinary. Anyone who thinks that he can have a bench spot with a hooker playing 14 and Waddell clearly a better backrower has no idea. If Sipley was fit Jestski should not even be considered.

That is the beauty of a forum, vive la difference or whatever,I saw a guy ripping in and going well, shame some of our other forwards did not play with that attitude....I am sorry if you think I have no idea,no problemo.I would be fine next year with Waddell 11 and 2 props and Gosiewski on the bench.Maybe Des has no idea?

I am sure I said ripping in and going well, slightly different when you add the second bit.Anyway this is about player ratings for the match, not who would be playing if Sipley was fit?Gosiewski bent the line backward and did more than some of the others out there tonight.Des picked him when Sipley was available so not sure how that backs up your point? Are you saying that Des has no idea and should be picking someone else?

Always a good read V8, and appreciate the effort you make to do the write up. Creates a great discussion, one of my favourites. Normally agree with most of your ratings, but like some others, I thought Elliott was fine. He looked dangerous early and was pretty good in support play. @Woodsie explanation of his play on the line is on the money. Walker disappointed me 5.5 for mine. JetSki I thought was good. But as I said, thanks for taking the time to write really informative reviews, first time my opinion has differed a little.
