I don’t know about the feather duster, conviction recorded, 2 years good behaviour and this is for verbal altercation between 2 people with no witnesses.

No suggestion of anything physical; IMHO, bloody harsh.

But hey, I wasn’t there or in court.

You mean no independent witnesses? Sam and the dad were the witnesses who both would have given evidence and clearly the magistrate believed dad.
As for intimidation not being significant unless there is physical violence, there is a lot of empirical evidence to the contrary.
Intimidation is a valuable asset on the rugby league field, not so much in the home or the workplace. Many league intimidators have had to learn this tough lesson, Blocker Roach is one example.
