Hi All,
I have a pretty busy offseason, as we are planning a move back to Australia as well as a hundred other things however as always I need to make plans for changes and ideas around the website.
One area I am toying with is changing up Silvertails to instead of being just a forum, instead being more of a Sea Eagles Social network as well. The idea is to move away from forums and create our own "Facebook Like" website where we can create groups, have a lot more smaller adhoc conversations as well as keeping the deeper discussions going.
Some of the software I am considering is
https://www.humhub.org/en
https://elgg.org/
https://www.boonex.com/features
https://www.oxwall.com/
https://www.opensource-socialnetwork.org/community
Why am I thinking of doing this?
Well Silvertails is great, I love it as much as everyone else, but like everything we have been around for 15 years and we need to stay fresh and relevant. Facebook is one way in which a lot of people are starting to get their Manly news and that is great but not where I want to head, I prefer to keep things away from there. However there is something to be said for the social network approach to things, and one thing about being a Sea Eagles fan is being part of a greater community of people. The way in which Social Networks communicate messages is great and a good way to consume information and I think it could work really well for Silvertails. Give people the ability to still have their personas as well as a way to communicate about the team, it will also open up the ability to spawn sub-groups and foster friendships, help with meetups of all of the far and wide spread sea eagles fans as well.
So its just something I am toying with but would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Dan
