Hi All,

I have a pretty busy offseason, as we are planning a move back to Australia as well as a hundred other things however as always I need to make plans for changes and ideas around the website.

One area I am toying with is changing up Silvertails to instead of being just a forum, instead being more of a Sea Eagles Social network as well. The idea is to move away from forums and create our own "Facebook Like" website where we can create groups, have a lot more smaller adhoc conversations as well as keeping the deeper discussions going.

Some of the software I am considering is

https://www.humhub.org/en
https://elgg.org/
https://www.boonex.com/features
https://www.oxwall.com/
https://www.opensource-socialnetwork.org/community

Why am I thinking of doing this?
Well Silvertails is great, I love it as much as everyone else, but like everything we have been around for 15 years and we need to stay fresh and relevant. Facebook is one way in which a lot of people are starting to get their Manly news and that is great but not where I want to head, I prefer to keep things away from there. However there is something to be said for the social network approach to things, and one thing about being a Sea Eagles fan is being part of a greater community of people. The way in which Social Networks communicate messages is great and a good way to consume information and I think it could work really well for Silvertails. Give people the ability to still have their personas as well as a way to communicate about the team, it will also open up the ability to spawn sub-groups and foster friendships, help with meetups of all of the far and wide spread sea eagles fans as well.

So its just something I am toying with but would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Social media. Hmm. Something not quite right about what could end up diluting the core essence of what this forum actually is. To me this site is a bunch of highly passionate Manly fans sharing their views openly about the team, the game etc etc. (Although due to insane PC not as openly as I would like). And social media is a dumbed down semi nightmare that is really all about endless "look at me" bollocks.

The bigger issue, everyone, is this:

I have a pretty busy offseason, as we are planning a move back to Australia

Dan's going home!!!!!

wow, that must have been some footy match with @Ryan !!!

As for the other thing...give it...if you wanna try it out. One day Manly might even officially like what you do!

Not being on facebook and with no future plans to be it'll be ta ta from me but whatever the people decide.

Dan's saying you wont have to be on facebook for his idea. It'll be like these forums are one wing of the house, the other stuff will be like the other wings of the house.

wander around at will.

Ummm assuming we all grew up with multiple wings in our houses??? (lol)

GE I struggle to find my way to the bathroom after a really big night out know what I'm sayin....

I voted no BUT happy to go which ever way you want.

I do agree with one thing though, for every one person posting on here there’s 50 posting about Manly on Facebook.

Love my Silvertails but we’ve been swamped by FB.

Would there be any chance of trialing the new format before you commit to it? I'd be happy to give it a go but it would be nice to be able to revert to what we have now if it proves unpopular.

I think change/improvement is good but I am not completely sold that Facebook is an answer or a direction. I will have a look at the links above later so I can better understand your thoughts Dan.

I think Dan made it clear it isn't Facebook. What we have now is unique and well laid out; however, I'm happy whichever way we go.

First off and I want this to be absolutely clear I am not saying Facebook! I’m saying utilising a platform like Facebook.
You don’t need to be your specific actual name you can be your forum profile but build out a larger profile share photos see an updated stream of information closer to what you are interested in.

You still have the ability discuss everything as per normal however expanding the capabilities to be more accessible.

What social media does really really well is how easy it is to share and access information.

An example would be. I can still have in-depth forum conversations but I can also share some photos of my experience in the game that can be consumed by people that choose to follow me. I may find specific users aren’t for me so I can block them from my content and me from theirs. I can create my own group for all the Amsterdam Manly fans and have smaller and closer individual targeted conversations about meet ups in Amsterdam.

Basically it’s no different to the information now but it’s about how that information is floated displayed and organized. The idea is to provide a much more individual experience for you as a manly fan rather than a take all.

Let me be absolutely clear in saying you do not have to share pictures of whatever you are eating for dinner. The idea is to use some of the ideas gained by social media and the way their systems work and target it absolutely at sea eagles fans.

If it's about getting more traffic to try and compete with Facebook forget it. Making silvertails Facebook lite will just kill it. Keep it like it is - uniquely positioned to appeal to the passionate sea eagles fans, many of whom hate Facebook and the like. No from me.
No definitely not this. It’s about organizing the information it a way people are used to consuming information

Probably just me but the entire dialogue around social media is a nightmare. Words like consuming. Users. Really? Shall we make it any more dehumanising? Isn't a User a human with drug issues?
