State of Origin.....2020

Better than taking the game to Melbourne for the umpteenth time and claiming they are exposing it to new fans.

Perth next year and Adelaide in 2020 IS exposing rugby league to new fans. Both cities had their own teams at one stage 20+ years ago and a lot of damage was done when the Reds and Rams were cut.....damage that they really haven't done a lot to try and fix, especially in Adelaide.

Aussie rules (i.e. the AFL) have been proactive in spreading the game around the country and the results have shown that. But league is still seen by those in SA and WA as an east coast thing and not a true national sport. Taking games like Origin to places like the new Perth Stadium and to the Adelaide Oval can only be a good thing for the code in Australia. It finally shows that they are actually willing to move beyond the traditional east coast boundaries.

Hmmmm.... Perth makes sense as they are a logical expansion area, but not convinced by Adelaide which has a dominant AFL presenc3.

This NRL strategy is an odd one. They keep expansion off the table year on year but are taking SOO around the country.

They say they want to listen to fans, and yet they take one of the most anticipated games every year far away from their core fan base (NSW/QLD).

This just sounds to me like a cash grab as Greenturd and his minions at NRL HQ don't know how to run the game and are desperate for cash.

I respect it will expose the game to a potential fan base but the reality is you need a team to follow and SA is low on the expansion agenda according to most reports/articlea I've read on expansion.

While I won't argue with the cash grab bit....because that's kinda obvious, I will argue about the expansion bit. All expansion talk is either another Brisbane team, or another team in NZ or (and its a long way off) a team in Perth, but again its mostly the east coast thing that makes the NRL look unwilling to move out of their own back yard while at the same time the AFL have moved full on into traditional league territory. Two teams in Qld, two teams in Sydney.

If Melbourne wasn't the home of the AFL, the Storm would likely be only a figment of the imagination. But, Melbourne was always the league's target right from the day that South Melbourne left Victoria and set up shop at the SCG as the Sydney Swans 36 years ago. Not only did the then VFL plonk a team in Sydney, they managed to put them at the NSWRL's traditional home ground.....and that didn't go down too well. From then on the goal was strike back by having a team in Melbourne, having them not only successful, but popular. Its a turf war thing.

The NRL have a lot to fix away from their traditional areas, a LOT of ground to recover. Believe me, in Adelaide at least there is still a lot of resentment that not only were the Rams cut from the competition, but since then we've all but been ignored. Taking a game like Origin (and hopefully in the future, tests involving Australia) to Adelaide can only help the code here.

While I won't argue that Origin should really only be played in NSW or Qld since they are the states involved, outside of the NRL Grand Final it is the biggest games rugby league has in this country so it makes sense to use Origin to get more fans in the Aussie rules dominated areas of the country.

This is just another money junket in disguise of spreading the game. Heck this is NSW v Queensland and most South Australians could not give a rats ass about this. Melbourne as a venue right now is basically a Queensland home game. I am a traditionalist and I would rather we have the games played in NSW and Queensland!

There are a lot of expat New South Welshmen and Queenslander's living in Adelaide and SA in general. And there a lot, like myself, who have family ties to either state.

My dad's side of the family is from Sydney. All of my first cousin's on that side grew up in Cromer less than 10 minutes from Brookvale Oval and my aunt (dad's sister) still lives on Willandra Road (for those who know the area) in the same house she and my uncle bought in 1946. And friends of mine (those unfortunate doesn't-matta fans), their dad grew up in Cessnock while their mum grew up in Tamworth and most of their family still lives in country NSW.

And that is before you get into those who are just league fans in general.
