The Half Time Break

The half time break is when the refs get a chance to look at the stats, don't discount that as a factor.

Always worries me a bit when we get a few penalties our way early in the game, it means the square up will go against us later on when it actually matters.

Baz said at half time that we needed to pick our moments better, when we chanced our arm in that first half.

I can only assume he was referring to the turn over we had on about half way, with 10 mins or less to go in the first half. It was pretty, pretty, play, but non stop attack with the ball in our own half after we have fought for 30 mins to get a lead.

But whilst we can go a little, attack happy when we are on top.

When the Boyz get a chatting too.

We can then go a little too defensive.

Give them some time, they will find a happy medium.

Ok, I said I'd raise this in the game thread and I hope it garnishes a few comments.

What is it with half time?

We start out on absolute fire, often go to the break leading 20-0 (or about that) and then come out and get run down or close to run down in the second half.

Now, with the tin foil hat on part of this is the so obvious ref square up ( they do love their GP games).

But, we just don't play the 80 minutes as we play the first 40!!!

Is it,

Inexperience.

The lack of a real dynamic leader.

The refs just doing the NRL's work.

The Coach not approaching half time properly.

Or is it something else?????
Without doubt we struggle in the second half and there ain't no question about that Mark.I was at the game today and at the Brisbane game also. What we fail to do is bust teams up the middle on a frequent occasion. All the teams that do well tend to create havoc up the middle before destroying opposition out wide.Any team that can do that wins games.I have seen us not even take on opposition in the second half with intensity in the forwards on occasions. Its like the other side can see a weakness in us and read us well.We need to push through their first line of defence and it's in the second half we don't commit enough. This is what I am seeing at games.I don't believe that it's the ref or anything else as we need to get the basics right instead off shooting ourselves in the foot.Good teams overcome bad decisions and we simply need to be better. No excuses.I can only predict 5th spot at best at the moment as it's our heart that is keeping us where we are at the moment on the ladder.Having said that we have played some good games this year, but we are not the only team that has.I would love to see us just step it up a notch with a consistent second half of good play.Consistancy and one on one would be my main concern at the moment. This is just my opinion and probably don't matter but I am not concerned about other teams only Manly.Would love to see us step it up.

Great post, probably exactly spot on.

Manly struggle at times to maintain the intensity in grinding games and start offering lethargic one out predictable go forward that lacks energy behind it. The sharp crisp ball movement(with numbers around the ball carrier) go forward off the back of direct power and speed in the first 20mins does tend to drop off a fair bit .

All it takes is a sway of early possession against Manly and we seem to struggle for long periods, getting into a rut.

I do feel today our back 5 could of offered more in the second half with more timely hitups(another 5-6 between Walker and Kelly), obviously we lose spark and sharpness with Tom out and Jorge injured for part of the half.

We still lack another power running forward that can play decent minutes to take the workload off Marty and AFB.
Tapine should be a target

On MMM a month or two ago Bill Harrigon said something along the lines of even ups and the refs must have been given a tap on the shoulder at half time.

Whilst i had always strongly suspected this sort of thing that the NRL poster boy said it is enough proof for me that it happens all the time.

In this game the Raiders ball control cost them the match. Overall they appeared more dangerous than Manly. We did well to capitalise on a dropped ball or 2 to get into position to score a couple of tries. They were a threat with the ball and I think in the 2nd half we didnt look like scoring. What helped us was DCE was on song getting us repeat sets. I thought today we really missed Tommy T as he gives us the threat when we attack. The team have done well to win the 2 games without him. When he comes back we will be much more potent with the ball.

The Faders were gassed from the 30-minute mark and had it not been for half time we would have routed them.
How then can a team come out with so much more energy - and be awarded every penalty - for the final 40 minutes?
I'd be checking the betting plunge at half time on the Faders.

Nothing against Wright but I thought there were 2 moments in the game where a faster, more powerful fullback would have broken through the Raiders' line and scored. Instead, Wright made half a break and ended up being tackled. He's done a good job so far but Tommy Turbo will give us that extra try or two in attack.
