After reading acres of newsprint and online copy about Jake Trbojevic since he was handed the NSW captaincy 10 days ago, you wonder if there’s anything left to say.
Then you ring Des Hasler.
“Jake’s a bit like an explorer,” Trbojevic’s former Manly coach says. “He’s always looking for something more.”
Sing it, Des.
“Back in the day of Christopher Columbus, there was an expression they often used: ‘Find me the horizon’. That’s what the Queen said to Columbus before he sailed off. It must have been pretty scary for sailors in those days when they thought the earth was flat and that they’d fall off the side. Jake’s a bit like that.”
Dropping off the edge of the world? That’s quite the foreboding metaphor for a rookie NSW captain.

Trbojevic will blindly lead the Blues onto Accor Stadium on Wednesday night as NSW sets sail for the New World after two consecutive series losses to Billy Slater’s Queensland.
Incoming coach Michael Maguire dropped several selection bombshells when he named his side for game one, but nobody saw the captaincy call coming – including Trbojevic.
He wasn’t Maguire’s first choice, of course.
Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary would have been given ownership of the side, including the captaincy, if he hadn’t torn his hamstring early in May.

Even when Cleary was ruled out, most assumed Panthers lock Isaah Yeo would be handed the armband after Maguire had dropped incumbent James Tedesco, who has returned to the side at fullback because of Dylan Edwards’ quad injury.
Yeo has been named vice-captain and his cool, calm leadership style is the perfect counterpoint to Trbojevic’s infectious enthusiasm for rugby league, his state and just life in general.
On the field, Trbojevic is the hardest of workers.
Off it, he’s a loveable puppy dog.
“I don’t have any messages of hate,” he chuckled at a media conference on Tuesday when told he was the nicest man in the game.
Which makes you wonder if he’s ruthless enough to captain in the Origin arena.
“He’s a different person on the field,” assures his injured brother, Tom. “He leads by example. He won’t be one for the big speech in training, but once the game comes around he’ll be ready to go. He never lets you down in the moment.”

“He’s like a big brother,” says Manly teammate Aaron Woods, who was on the tour. “He’s just the ultimate team player. He’s so caring.”
That includes the opposition. You might’ve heard about the urban legend of Trbojevic apologising to rival players after he hits them too hard in defence.
Wood says it’s true. He was playing for the Wests Tigers against Manly at Leichhardt Oval one afternoon when Trbojevic cut him in half with a textbook tackle.
That’s the other thing with Jakey T: in a game in which proper tackling technique has become very loose, he still knows precisely where to put his head before driving forward and dumping the ball-carrier on his back.
“You OK?” Trbojevic, standing at marker, asked Woods.
“What did you say!?” the front-rower replied, stunned.
Hasler says Trbojevic’s nice guy persona is at odds with the player you’ll find on the field.
“Don’t be swayed by his demeanour – he’s a fierce competitor,” Hasler says. “He’s that player who will always be there. He does all the things you don’t see. He’s the last in the corner making a covering tackle. He’ll do all the ****, ugly work in the middle that nobody sees. That’s why he’s made for Origin.”
A cursory glance at Trbojevic’s statistics this season suggests he’s hardly in brilliant form. He’s averaging about 62 metres per game.
But his strength isn’t endless carries into the teeth of the defence. Rather, it’s in the way he fortifies the middle of the field in defence.
Those around him trust him to never slip off a tackle. He’s averaging a staggering 38 tackles a match.

This week, I got lost watching Trbojevic interviews after various wins for Manly.
My favourite came after NSW didn’t pick him for the first match in 2022. After leading Manly to a big win over the Wests Tigers, he was asked on Fox Sports whether coach Brad Fittler had called him regarding his non-selection.
“Oh nah I haven’t spoken to anyone but um you know I just haven’t thought about it you know everyone they picked was in good form and you know I reckon they deserve to get another chance they were sort of unlucky the other night you know you back them to do the job again so hopefully for them they get another chance but if I’m called upon I’d love to be there I’m just enjoying doing it for Manly enjoying being captain and yeah hopefully we can get a few wins,” Trbojevic said.
On Wednesday night, the endless search for Origin dominance begins. In the final minute, when everyone else is out on their feet, the NSW captain will still be standing, looking at the horizon.
“He’s so obsessed with the task — every game,” Hasler says. “That’s why he spits and slobbers and plays until the end. There is no horizon for him.”
Like Columbus, let’s hope he never finds it.
