Time to lay off Brookie Oval - Dean Ritchie

Brookie Surface Nails Another

The call to stop playing NRL games at Brookvale Oval have grown louder following the Knights losing Aidan Guerra in tonight's game at McDonald James Stadium.

"We had 17 Manly players and their support staff running all over our sacred ground tonight with boots that must never have been cleaned from last week," said a trustworthy sauce. "They were dropping Brookvale soil everywhere. If they can't clean their Brookvale tainted boots to remove soil and grass the club should be relocated or kicked out of the NRL".

Just for your info V8, I have played on the SCG (albiet lower grades) and from a players perspective the worst thing was a lack of spacial awareness .... the ground fell away from the centre and without the modern advertising boundaries around the touch lines ... you couldn't always see where the touch lines were. ... and with 20-30 metres of ground between the touch line and the fence .... it was often very difficult to get an accurate feel of where you were ...

Modern advertising boards.....another bane of playing on an oval like the SCG or Adelaide Oval or Optus Stadium in Perth. Because those grounds aren't designed for rectangle pitch sports like the two rugby codes and soccer, the advertising boards that surround the rectangles actually obstruct the view for spectators, especially those sitting in the lower bowl sections which often have a fairly shallow rake.

Watching a game at somewhere like the new Western Sydney Stadium will probably a million times better than watching a game at the SCG because, shock horror, its designed for rectangle pitch sports. Fans will be almost right on top of the action rather than miles away.

One of my best mates is a Pommy from Doncaster (poor lad is a Chooks fan) who went to numerous games at the old Wembley and has been to a few at the newer one. Even he has said that while the old stadium was great with the history and all that, because the pitch was surrounded by a greyhound track, plus it actually had a speedway track inside of that, spectators were just too far away from the action and in all reality, the new Wembley simply $hits all over the old one for spectator viewing. Its the same thing. Just because a venue has history doesn't make it a good place to play at or watch a game at.
