Great story Mark! I wasn't aware he was signed so early. From when manly announced his signing, how many years did he still have in the SL?

I think at least 2 , I forget exactly.

It was a long process , he played one season in the bush for his home town , then went to the SL ( rather than play for the Eels again ), I think the whole thing was 3 years.

I guess I was lucky , introduced by Crusher and then sat next to him to watch a busy footy game , no pressure on “ getting a selfie “, “ getting a signature “ .

He was a pretty quiet fella , he knew I was a Manly fan but it was a very casual few hours.

I’ve told this story before , but I attended the group 5 Grand Final in Wee Waa , I think 2004.

I saw my old mate Noel Cleal in the crowd ( walking back from the bar ) and he said “ come and sit with us I’ve got someone you’d love to meet” . So over I go , “ Mark , meet Bob Fulton “, me “ holy **** one of my idols you aren’t hiding Igor in there somewhere that would really make my day “ .

So we sit down to watch the game, my team , Moree Boars , V the Wee Waa Panthers, captained by none other than one J Lyon.

Crusher , “ Mark can you keep a secret (of course ) , Manly have signed Jamie but he has to play a few years in the SL as he can’t play with another NRL club due to his contract with the Eels”.

Me, wow , meeting Bozo and getting this news , you’ve made my day.

Of course Wee Was destroyed Moree , Jamie set every try up , the bush boys were outclassed and had no answer.

Jamie came over at the end of the game to say GDay to Bob & Noel and that’s where I first met him.

I had a bit to do with Jamie at club and he always remembered that day when we first met, lovely fella !!

It wasn’t announced for a further 6 months , I was just busting to tell someone but couldn’t.

Sorry if you’ve read the story before but it’s an interesting one.

Got a great pic of my eldest son who was 5 at the time (tenyr ago!) with Jamie! The young fella getting squashed at a fan event at Brothers in Brisbane. Jamie grabbed him and pulled him behind the signing tables and he got the backstage experience of autographs and pics!

I had a long talk to The Great Bonzo at Junee the day they unveiled the Ray Warren statue. He signed my jersey and a few old footy cards I had from the 60's and 70's.

He drove down to the famous Junee Schoolboys Football Carnival, the biggest in the world apparently. He told me it "was one of the best things he had seen in whole life" 1000's of kids play rugby league on about a 10 different fields at the one time.

I also seen a funny one, Bob was coach it was 1985 at Brookvale. Manly had lost a stack of recent games, Glenn Ryan was captain this day. I was standing in front of the western stand as one of the local lunatics approached Bob, who was headed to the cage, with about 3 scrapbooks and half a dozen vhs video's and he told Bob he had all the answers to Manlys woes. Bob stopped right beside me and proceeded to verbally rip this Manly fan a new "one". It would be doubtful old mates homework made to the game ever again.
