The overall assessment to date of our team is that they have NOT been capable of defending well consistently and that is the reason that they are in danger of missing the 8 .

I like the tactic of resting at key points of the game, and love the situation where making the 8 is dependent on other results. All this talk about "controlling your own destiny" is bunk.

A gazillion years ago, when I was doing my teaching course, a wise old head explained to me that you could either teach using charisma or dry methodical stuff (clearly my choice was the former given that I can't describe the latter, had spectacular results, and burnt out in five years!). Each is equally effective but it's important if you take the charisma route that you never let the students think that they're your friend. They must always know you're the teacher and that you are steering them in the right direction and that you will have them do things that might not be popular but you're doing it for their results.
With this in mind, I've long recognised that Baz has gone the charisma route but am afraid he's fallen into the friend trap. Once there, it's nearly impossible to come back.

The things that got us to third, where our aggression, passion, speed and controlling the ruck. All of these things have dipped a lot over the last six weeks. The resilience that was evident for much of the season has disappeared and soon as any heat is on our fringe defence we concede points frequently. I think the uncertainty about the position of the coach moving forward is having an effect on the playing group, end of the day its no excuse!!

You dont just forget how to defend all of a sudden. There's an issue somewhere between players, coaching staff and management that's caused this and they can't get their heads around it. Mentally they're fuked and have been for around 6 weeks. Coincidentally that's when salary cap and coaching rumours all flourished.

This is spot on. I am a teacher and can't stand watching the 'friend' teachers swear and act like a kid around high schoolers. They get a warm fuzzy feeling 'the kids like me, yay'. But they don't get the results and mis represent that feeling as respect. You can have a joke and be approachable but you are the boss and don't let that ever be questioned. I'm possibly one of the loosest teachers I know. I taught science for a while and the kids loved it because I'd do all sorts of stuff that others deemed to dangerous but I always made them promise not to go home and tell their parents that they burnt their hand/perforated their eardrums some other way and not in the science lab explosion of period 3.

Not sure If this applies to barret.

It's either complacency or something rotten behind the scenes that has caused all this recent rot. Hopefully just the former and they can snap out of it this week.

If there is something awry behind the scenes hopefully they sort it out in the off season, make some shrewd signings, and get themselves back in to the top 4 challenging for a premiership next year.
