We need a kicker

We need a goal kicker bad. Its going to cost us in the close games during the finals and the later games this season. We either have to go out and buy a goal kicking forward e.g. Throw the bank at Lowe as he is a top clutch kicker and with a little bit more practice during the off-season would be moving away from 70% up into the 80% range. Or we pick two or three players during the off-season and develop them into goal kickers. DCE should be one, he has no trouble with distance and kicks pretty straight just struggles with the technique part of kicking. Another two for backups when DCE is injured or kicking poorly or something along those lines. And Id love to see Wright stay kicker but if hes no guarantee to kick every game we would probably have more benefit from Taufua or after Kellys poor game you make him work his way back into the side and put Wright in the centres and Taufua returns to the wing. Food for thought, but in my opinion we can still win a premiership with no goal kicker, but it will be very hard.

DCE has to step up, there is no other way. His spot in the team is guaranteed, he gets the big bucks, he's a well balanced athlete, just needs the time kicking in games. No reason he can't become as good as Cam Smith, who wasn't much chop when he first started taking the conversions.

Wasn't DCE a sharp shooter when we were affiliated with the sunshine coast?
I thought he kicked a stack of goals then.
What I don't understand is if Wright isn't fit enough to kick, assuming that's why he's not, how can he be fit enough to play?

You do see it occasionally, I'm pretty sure even JT has had periods where he's carrying a groin or hammy injury and is OK to play, but not to kick.

The full-force motion of a place kick, with the follow-through behind it, puts a lot more pressure on that upper leg/groin area than running does.

In today's press conference baz discusses our goal kicking

Says we need to be better in that department, also guys dce kicked 4 from 5 today. Baz also mentioned wrights leg injury, which he says was the reason he couldn't convert properly for the past two matches

Think DCE lost all confidence in goalkicking during his rookie season, about 4 games in we lost to Souths, and he had a kick from the sideline to win the game and bottled it

Yep you are spot on, I said this last year repeatedly.

He had to be captain and goal kicker. I got howled down by those saying Jake should be captain.

DCE earns the big bucks and should shoulder the responsibility. I agree there is no reason he can't learn to kick as good as Smith.

the difference between a 70% and 80% kicker is only 1 point per week, we really 2 points every second week.

Don't want a Halligan arrangement where you weaken a position just to accommodate but should be looking for someone in a position we need to bolster.

I don't see why Chez cant become our kicker
I'm not privy to how much Chez does away from the team 'Maybe the club can employ a kicking coach and whoever is going to be the kicker has to put the extra time time in with that coach. These players get paid enough so just depends if the player the Coach wants to kick has to put in the extra work

Im just loving we are thinking our goal kicking could cost us in the finals. Lets all cast our minds back to the first few rounds.....

I stand by my belief we are not a realistic contender for the big dance, but in the next year or so absolutely! Lets enjoy the unexpected for this year

Yes @Turbo1 we do need a goalkicker, hence my comment in the game day thread about Hastings being left out once again.

With our next few games, and indeed into the finals, we're really going to need an accurate goalkicker, as kicking goals could make us or break us.

I think its a bit much to put that extra responsibility on DCE, though if we have to use him, we have to. If we can't have Hastings and Wright's injured, surely Walkz can do some extra practice.
