    [Resurrected] Tom Wright

He had 4 carries and made 3 tackles... so the physical requirements are somewhat different to League.

Not really; timing is important. If the coach was sacked while we were on the edge of the top 8 several rounds ago, we would have got a stop-gap caretaker coach with the season on the line. The results could have been just the same, or worse, some would blame the caretaker coach, and the club...

You don't think the same captain and chief playmaker is a factor?

Our 2018 season had a younger and fitter Tom, DCE, peak Jake T, Taupau, Fonua-Blake, Dylan Walker, Api, Manase Fainu, and so on... and we very nearly won the wooden spoon. Yes we need a circuit breaker which means he should go... but in no way was it worse than our 2016-18 efforts.

...but apart from that, you're a fan of DCE?

Benji was the head coach at the Tigers last year, and was allegedly doing the head coaching role behind the scenes in 2023, even though Tim Sheens was the name in the record books. The Tigers won the wooden spoon in both years (granted, they also won it in 2022). They've had some good wins, but...

    2026 recruitment & retention

If Josh Aloiai and/or Jake T get medically retired, then there's $500k - $1.5m of space in the salary cap for 2026... But until that gets finalised we can't really sign any big targets as we're otherwise only moving on players on modest coin, who have to be replaced by players on similar...

All NRL Games [Round 23, 2025]

I can only imagine that his manager wanting (and getting) a reported $650k per year for him was the issue.

    Manly Attacking Formula ?

I would be surprised if he does. At his best he was a very serviceable cog (on minimal coin) in a machine that has much more expensive problems elsewhere. But this season he was another half step off the pace, repeatedly injured and has had a few head knocks as well.

All NRL Games [Round 23, 2025]

At this point that would be the Roosters, who somehow with half a dozen Origin players, still aren't in the Top 8.

    Time to pull the trigger

Who misses out for Manly to make the Top 8? Penrith just moved up to 4th which is where I think they'll finish, so that would be some relief if we made the 8.

The Dragons haven't made the finals under Flanagan, they're still outside the Top 8, they've recruited even more old players than we have, and also been flogged by 50 points while at full strength this season. But despite that they've extended his contract. They have had a few good wins this...

    Tom Trbojevic was a Legend

Imagine a parallel universe where Brett Stewart was born 10 years later, still scores 150+ tries, has the same number of NSW and Australia appearances but like Tom T, doesn't win a premiership. Would he still be a club legend?

I agree with you. It was more a comment that at the same time, as leaders, the senior players (who in this case also occupy about 25% of the salary cap) are almost as important as the coach. And in this case they might have representative honours and present well on TV, but they've delivered...

Game Day: Raiders V Manly [Round 23, 2025]

51 minutes in, 0 runs, 0 run metres. He's already here for 2026. I don't understand why the club is entertaining extending his contract, even on little coin.

Game Day: Raiders V Manly [Round 23, 2025]

Some of the people on Silvertails who assert that we have zero chance against the Raiders also asserted that we would get slaughtered by the Storm late-season in Melbourne, without Haumole... and we won. We are always a chance of winning.

    Sack Seibold Immediately

Several of these senior players have missed the finals under Toovey, Barrett, Hasler, Seibold, all of whom were or will likely be moved on. Given that we have made the finals 4 times and the top 4 only once since 2014, I think it is time to stop treating them like they are somehow the arbiters...

Why would you want him as a prop when he does not (or cannot) get over the advantage line?

    Post-Game Discussion Manly V Chooks [Round 22, 2025]

I was actually paraphrasing a section in Wayne Bennett's memoir from 2002, where he talks about what is a good loser and what is a bad loser. He summarises that in his experience, the players that mouth off, scream, carry on immediately after a loss are usually the ones that are putting up a...

    Jake T.

I like Jake, but purely on his football output, it would be questionable to give him a contract extension for 2027 (when he'll be another 2 years older), even on reduced money. He can tackle hard, but doesn't have the speed or footwork to make the defence second guess themselves, nor the size...
