2026 recruitment & retention

I’d rather win the spoon with Croker than a comp with Mahoney; he is a germ.
If we don't recruit some forwards, could very well happen next year. An injury prone turbo and nella, and ageing Jake, browny and possibly Taukeiaho. Untested players in Bryan and Lavakeiaho. Burbo and waddell. Need i say more...

Oh in that case, and I know people will come at me on age but I'd definitely take Papali'i. Still playing well, a leader, a presence.

Much better option than Kerr IMO
I'm thinking to re balance our squad we have to go younger.

Jurbo, Brown, AOA, TKO, Lodge. It's slot of experience.

Iknow you've been big on Trey Mooney for several years. Dominant in ressies he hadnt really shown himself in As. But I reckon he's now taken that step up.looks a a few kg heavier, and finally confident. H's now just a really nice mix of mobile, big, aggressive.

Even in Yesterday's game Mariota, even The younger Molo. They looked physical and energetic Nella like.

We need to get in a couple of next gen.

We need to go “ next gen “ and be patient.

But if we have say , AoA $600 & Frog $550 ( just plucked those figures out of my arse but it would be close ) then that certainly gives us a war chest to sign a forwards leader which I think I we really lack.

Now of course we still have Jake who is a great motivator so I’m not talking that angle rather the , give me the ball , smash it up the middle , turn around and say “ like that boys , you following me ??”.

Young blokes need this , someone who sets an example and who they’ll follow into battle.

The mistake the club makes is signing average players from other clubs who are older and have a history of injury. We dont give the juniors a crack , and if they do we give them say 3 or so games to perform and if they dont put in a man of the match performance , they are then shown the door. The average players who have a little NRL experience from other clubs cost probably around the 100k to 300k mark, with little upside.

Note I didn’t say “ average “

I said “ next gen youngsters & have patience “

And then , “ a forwards leader who can show then them the way”.

We simply are unable to afford “ buying a comp” , we need an super rich benefactor to do that.

Mooney, Mariota or Simi would all be good pickups

Yeah I'd love Mooney.

And to clarify on Papa, I'd only be bringing him in alongside a few younger forwards replacing Jazz, Aloiai (if retired) and Lodge.

Not hell bent on it but can see value in the right situation.

Papa, Mooney, Navele. Aloli to move on. Happy for Brown, Sipley to play NSW and mentor young players and come into firsts 3&4 games a years as cover.

Apparently a ‘struggling’ team has made discreet enquires about Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. Has a get out clause he can activate this November that will make him a free agent for 2027. Mestrov has specifically said 2027 we will be looking for an elite prop so who knows. Unlikely but money talks & we should have plenty of it.

Here’s the comments from Mestrov earlier in the year:
“In 2027, we will free up salary-cap money and we’re looking for a quality front-rower.
Payne is already on good money at the Broncos and you would have to pay even more to get him out of Brisbane. Without speaking for ‘Seibs’ (Seibold), he is the type of prop we would be looking at.”
