Best Coaches Of All Time

All of the above really - but all three coaches were "lucky" enough to coach superstars early in their careers which helped get things moving along.

Riley and PJ were assistants, that were promoted to head coaches, on teams that had Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan respectively. Popovich's teams were built around Tim Duncan who was drafted number 1
I guess the NBA with the draft can be like that

Just on Dessie ... one thing that has always concerned me about his coaching ... is the fact that none of his assistants have ever gone on to greater things ... take Bellamy and Robinson .. their ex-assistants are littered throughout the NRL coaching ranks.

Pretty good yardstick for a coach.
Dessie has always struck me as a control freak, hence I think he prefers yes men as assistants, rather than free thinkers. My way or the highway.

On the contrary, I think they won the comp in their 2nd season. Pretty close to the definition of an overnight success.
As another poster pointed out this was more of a case of beginners luck for the club. One off rather than sustained success. It was not until 2007 and 2009 they won ( both were stripped) It was not until 2012 they won a legitimate competition under Bellamy. 13 years!

Ivan Cleary doesn't even get a mention in dispatches?

Cleary 4 premierships in 19 years with a win % of 74%
Bellamy 3 premierships in 23 years with a win % of 70%
Some may think he wouldn’t do any better than Seibold either. Panthers seem to have a pretty good “system”.

My opinion. Any coach that can keep his team in the semis 21 years straight (though noting the loss of 2 premierships in 2007 and 2009 and loss of minor premiership 2008 through salary issues), has to be one hell of a coach. Of course the heaviest grand final winners as coach belong to Ken Kearney 8 and Jack Gibson 5

LOL. Cleary's career win percentage is 57%. His Penrith win percentage is 74% (as you'd expect with 4 premierships in 6 years)

The highest win percentage of coaches who have coached more than 100 games is Norm Provan (68.5%) just ahead of Bellamy (67.7%). Provan did Captain Coach though at Saints in a dominant era.

That’s some drop off in clearys stats ex panthers. I wonder which coach has the highest win % across more than one club? That would be a good indicator of “greatness”.

Still, hard to go past Bellamy. Sustained success built on ruthlessness, single minded pursuit of excellence and no excuses.
