I watch all the matches. I am Test fanatic and hate to think what 20-20 is going to kids, why would anyone ever want to take up bowling.

It's easily the fastest growing sport in the land. Sponsors are lining up just like fans.

Love it or hate it, it's here to stay. Makes January my favourite month for TV, BBL into Aus Open tennis.

I'm currently undergoing counciling for my lack of Rugby League fix. I hate summer, I'm over cricket (hardly watched any of it anyway) & A-league is boring.
Oh and tennis is full of spoilt brat assholes who need a good smack.
Nothing will substitute for NRL and much as we complain about things in the NRL, there is simply no substitute for the greatest game ever and the greatest team of all time the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

BBL is a great concept if you take it for what it is, a high energy, high entertainment, quick and fast hit festival. Have been to quite a few big bash games and they are a great night out, and the kids love it. I'm off to Sixers v Heat tonight in fact.

It's a specialised form of cricket so the other thing I like about it is that you get to see players that would never get a shot on the big stage because they aren't test standard, especially in the bowling stakes.

Personally I'm a massive test cricket fan, but BBL format is an awesome way to fill in summer nights. I'd rather watch this than ODI's to be honest. Cricket Australia have backed a winner and have done a great job. This will bring the younger generation back to cricket and boost participation rates.

Me exactly , love the test matches but ODI's are doomed.

I understand your issue BUT the simple fact is the BBL are killing it in attendances and TV ratings.

It's a bit like the Nines, I hate them but they are popular with some.

To suit generation next the NRL need to do more , much more !!
I love test cricket also and must admit that it's not the same as it used to be either with the standard of cricketers in each nation dropping off big time over the past 20 years .In saying that I think the big bash gets more younger kids and women on seats because of the entertainment over a shorter period without getting bored . So it's a winner for them.

Test cricket boring as bat****.I can see test cricket becoming an every 4th year thing.ODI here to stay ,but 2nd behind 20/20.

But that's the thing isn't it , think about how many people are going , over 80k in Melbourne last week to one game, and even 34k last night to the team running dead set last with only 1 win for the tournament.

Very, very smart marketing
If there was only one or two teams of NRL in Sydney the crowds would far exceed that so it's a spurious argument. It's like saying Brisbane must be a better run footy club because their crowds are higher than the Chooks. It takes no account of the competition the Chooks have in Sydney for members and subsequent crowds.

If the NRL want crowds like that they need to cull some Sydney clubs. For my mind it's a simple matter of shifting Cronulla to Perth, Tigpies to Brisbane or Adelaide. St Merge to be considered a Wollongong club and that would be a good start.

Odis are doomed?? It's test cricket that won't be around in 5 years IMO no one is competitive but in odis in t20 you get to watch a good match
ODIs is the most boring version to me, it serves no purpose now as it was the T20 equivalent for it's day.

To me the perfect set up is Tests and T20, use one dayers as a bridge into either version of the game and more as a state level competition.

For the most part of ODIs history overs 15-40 were boring as hell just knocking the ball around, no idea how ODis survived so long.

A wider variety of shot making used in T20 has also helped batters at test level not get bogged down with either dominant leg side or off-side fields or high pitched deliveries so it is not all doom and gloom.

Problem with T20 is it doesn't do much for the bowling stocks overall or the development of spin which requires patience, time, fielding protection and craft which is the beauty of tests.

A game spread over 5 days is such a stupid idea in this day and age that only someone like the NRL would seek to replicate it by spreading games over 5 days...

The remaining NRL teams in Sydney after the cull would have to be renamed, it wont work retaining the local name and not attract a larger support base.

Super League always had the correct vision but at the wrong time and done in all the wrong ways.

Pretty much NSW= Nth South East West and maybe Central also(Sydney) + Hunter, Qld=(inc GC) South, Central, North, State teams of Melb, Adelaide and Perth.

Problem is without retaining a link to the history of the competition in the names of clubs you risk killing the competition also.

League has survived mostly on tribalism but did not grow large enough to sustain it, so we either love the present make up to death or slowly try and change the club make up/structure to survive long term.

Just back from the game...it was an okay game but the amount of kids...wow

Glenn maxwell ordinary??!! He is ranked 9th in overall odi batsman rankings. 9th in the world! He was our best batsman at the World Cup and bowled well also, bbl is not for ordinary players!! Mitchell marsh is in the aussie team he is ordinary could even manage a score in the match he played he scored a duck!!?? Glenn maxwell has 2 half centuries in the tournament so far, how is he ordinary? What a stupid comment make sure you check where players are ranked and there stats before you make silly comments like that!

Ah, Brookvale 2015 is the hero going around talking about his cricketing prowess. So, now we are getting personal, I think you are a wanker. I notice that you didn't mention Maxwell's test record. To be totally honest, I don't think ODI's should be a marker of a player's cricketing ability, either. Cricket rankings? LOL! They still have Dale Steyn as the best test bowler at the moment. He hasn't done much for a while, but yeah, you keep looking at those rankings. Maxwell's a bum. The fact that his little throw downs in T20 cricket are in any way effective is a sad indictment of the product. When he scores regular runs in test cricket, I will re-assess. T20 is for 7 year old kids who have 10 minute attention spans.

Now, tell me more about your cricketing exploits. I find them fascinating...

The BBL to me is a bit like where the NRL was heading in the late 90's. Showboating post try celebrations and things like that which got old quick.

Can't see it lasting to be honest and the sport behind it is not strong enough to hold it up on its own.

My point isn't so much as how good is the cricket, it's not, it's just bash and barge , but how good the whole package is in an entertainment sense.
So Mark, what is the answer?
Cricket has prostituted itself for the $$.
They have removed the fabric of the game and put on all the "entertainment" because it's the new shiny thing on market.....until it becomes just another thing in the market ...and then what?

I really enjoy the BBL, unfortunately the 6ers are having a season we'd rather like to forget.

The BBL is seeing huge growth in viewership. Has the NRL ever gotten 80,000 people to a mid season, non-representative game?

I really enjoy the BBL, I think its a fun game to watch and CA do a great job of the whole spectacle.

NRL is a different game, and I would always watch manly play over cricket. But the convenient things is they play different times of the year.

The BBL has advantages that the NRL, AFL and SuperXV dont.
1. Its played in summer where its nice and warm at night
2. It has next to no competition from other sporting codes. Especially during the week.
3. It does a better job at selling to kids, which drags their parents into it. While the game may get tired for some, new kids get on-board each year. (its why the wiggles are so successful selling the same material for 20 years).

Yes the BBL will drop in popularity over time, its the natural lifecycle. But I think it will still be a popular sport.

Day-night tests will save test cricket. ODIs will slowly be changed over to T20I.

I think you will see a summer of cricket with 3 day-night tests, 2 day tests (boxing day and new years) 2-3 ODIs and 6-7 T20Is.

It is a very good time of the year to attract crowds. Everyone is on holidays and they are searching for affordable entertainment for their kids. This fills that market nicely. But it is all fluff and no substance. I don't think you would see many people with BBL teams tattooed on their arms with BBL comps won in a few years time. There is plenty of peripheral filler crap going on at these games to keep your mind off the fact that it is dead boring though.
