Des Hasler retiring

Bit rough mate, when u have a Shi*ttt team u can't do much. Also how many coaches have won Sh###Ttt for us???? He's won 2 Premiership out of 8 + Penn bull** didn't help. To some of us he's a Legend but not to some oh well can't win them all. Also 99% go for da $$$cash U cannot blame him. 40-0 against the best team in da history said it all, GOOD LUCK DESSIE HASLER
So clearly you just forget him dumping us 24 hours after a GF victory , taking half the coaching department and trying to steal our players.

Right then !!

NOT ROUGH AT ALL!!

I said , I respect him until that point , after that completely dead to me ‘

One of the great low periods of my Manly journey hearing Des had quit a couple of days after the elation of the GF victory… he is not responsible for the slide thereafter - but he did not help either

Credit where it’s due for his contribution to Manly up to that point but he totally lost me as an admirer/supporter that day…

I’m not going to get into a defend Des debate or suggest that he has not shown a tendency to look after himself, but…I think the Manly club did try and play hardball with Des in 2011 and were not offering security and/or money in line with a premiership winning coach. We weren’t tracking towards a premiership at one point and they went cold on him a bit and Greenberg struck.

Anyway, it’s ancient history.

That's absolutely right! Penn and co. low-balled Des, took him for granted and just assumed because he bleeds Maroon and White that he'd be happy to stick around and just accept whatever was offered to him instead of paying the man what he was worth (for Fk's sake he just won us two premierships!!!!)

Well that sleeze-bag Greenturd and the dastardly dogs saw all this and took full advantage of the situation and lured Des over to the dogs in the dead of night with a dirty deal. Well you could hardly blame Des for doing what he did (in fact, even though I hate the bulldogs, I can't blame them either for making the most of it in their favour. I wish our club were that ruthless (like we once were)).

Yeah, that's sort of how I remember it happening at the time. We finished 8th in 2010 and the club adopted a 'wait and see approach' to 2011; you snooze, you lose.

One could argue that Des should have informed Manly of the Dogs offer and intention to leave, etc. but maybe he was cranky at the position the club took towards him after the success he bought to the club in 2008; loyalty is a two way street after all. If anything, maybe his willingness to keep it all 'hush hush' was the catalyst for the eventual 2011 premiership; if it was known prior to the GF, it could have derailed the season. We'll never know.

Look, I am no ostrich, Des is Des and he certainly has his ways but I think there's a more balanced truth to the whole saga than meets the eye...and as for his departure in 2022, I can't blame him for his fury.

I hve wished doom on Dessie since the day he walked out the door ...

But none of that changes the fact that his contributions to the history of Manly are legendary ...
Same for me however to be a true club legend you need to leave a legacy. That is, leave the club in a better position then you found it. Des failed on all counts - the salary cap was crippling, he tried to poach players and support staff and basically laid a big turd on his way out. His coaching efforts at Dogs, Manly mk2 and Titans has been a large fail. F*&% him.

Many sides to that story , I was a bit of an insider (of sorts) at that time so got to hear many variations.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle ( like it always is).

I could type for hours on the subject but it’s been done to death on here already.

Each one , doomed for failure, as it will be if he indeed takes on PNG.

During my time working with the club I got to see firsthand the difficulties in working with him, he’s one unique character, very invested in his players ( the good side ) , absolutely impossible to deal with on every other factor.

I also believe his methods relate more to 2005-2015 and in 2025 are completely outdated.

Honestly I hope he does retire , but I bet he doesn’t.

Unless perhaps you were involved with the club during his playing days, all we knew was he was a fitness freak but did not see much about his personality. Many players would comment he was quiet, and so polite that he was always saying 'sorry'. Did that become his nickname even?

It didn't surprise many of us that he became a trainer for nsw blues and coaching lower grades, but do wonder when his difficult personality arrived.

Good points

But I assure you it was “ my way or the highway “ back in the day.

Yeah you’re right about it being done to death. I certainly have no insider information about how it went down so respect other people’s beliefs or perceptions. I also have to be honest; once you’re a Manly person, I find it really hard to stay angry/bitter. Watmough, Foran and now $DE are players that have given cause for dislike but after the initial disappointment wears off, I find my stance softening towards them based off the great memories they’ve provided. I guess Des is the same for me.

Oh don’t worry, I still respect De$ as a player & coach until 2011.

I admire Choc as a Manly great

I remember the great times with Fozzie

And I’ll certainly remember $CE for those golden point wins and being one if the great half backs we’ve had.

But I’ll also remember how each one of them shat on the club on departure , and feel a level of sadness at what could be , but isn’t , as a result of that.
