Nobody overlooked it ..... they went to the NRL's integrity commission .... and the NRL integrity commission said there was no cause to stand Fainu down until his court case has been heard ...

Appears to me that all protocols have been addressed and satisfied ..... and Manly has acted appropriately .....
Valid point BUT .... with the season gone, why would those in charge decide to play with fire? They had to get permission to go out on a limb and promote him to the 30. They knew of the charge, why play with the reputation of the club, a club which, thanks to mismanagement, already has a reputation that stinks to high heaven? Why?

If he’s guilty I’m guessing he’s played his first AND last game for 2018.

As to being sacked and never playing again I’m guessing none of you were ever 19 and stupid ??

I was married at 19 ( 20 the next day) but boy my mates and I did some dumb **** ( for the time) when I was 16,17,18 and 19 because that’s what most teenagers do!!

Very few of them stop and consider their actions but are usually very remorseful in the light of the day.

I’d like to think the kid can take his punishment, and that the club , and his family can help him through what is obviously a difficult time.
There is silly, then there is criminal. I have zero friends or family that treat women that way...

And this is different to Corey Norman in some strange way.
He has done a dumb thing but he just needs a kick in the freckle and counciled in life skills.
PS I totally respect women,3 sisters,2 daughters,4 Granddaughters,a great Mum and grandmother.
What he did was just plain stupid.

Oh my god. AND ITS A CRIMINAL ACT!!!!!!!!!

That’s why he’s been charged! What the fuc$ don’t people get about this. Not silly, criminal. If alleged action is proven..

EDIT by Referee - poster warned and some posts deleted for inappropriate behaviour.

I guess we should wait for the case to be heard before we get to the sentence.

Exactly. Because - here’s the thing - two lines in a news article don’t tell the full story. We have bugger all information about what has actually happened, what was filmed, and who it was sent/shown to.

Some of the knee jerk reactions would be appropriate if he’d been caught, say, stashing hidden cameras in someone’s bedroom, then putting the footage on Pornhub.

At the other end of the scale - and we don’t know that this isn’t what happened - two things explicitly stated in the article are that the young lady and Fainu are known to each other, and that whatever was filmed was transmitted via Snapchat. I don’t use Snapchat myself, and I know it can be used to send group messages, but most people I know use it for direct, person-to-person video/picture messaging. Consider the possibility that the victim in this case is/was his girlfriend (or a regular friend with benefits, whatever, entirely their business) he’s thought it would be amusing/arousing to film their consensual encounter (another point explicitly stated in the news report), and has sent the footage to the young lady in question at some later point, which she has then been duly disgusted and horrified by, and reported to police. There’s every chance the footage in question was not seen by any third party (yes, there’s also every chance it was the 21st century version of bragging to your mates at the pub about the hot chick you shagged, and it’s been sent to said mates).

My gut feeling, based on the few details known, is this looks to be much closer to the ‘stupid teenager doing something regrettable on the spur of the moment’ end of the spectrum, rather than the ‘reprehensible sexual deviant/predator’ end. I guess we’ll see.

Exactly, we have no idea what was filmed and who it was shared with.

I don't necessarily agree with the club naming him to play whilst the matter is unresolved - i.e no plea entered yet, but he is entilted to the presumption of innocence.

He is either a phycopathic evil and demented sexual predator .... or a very stupid 19 yo dope who thought it would be funny at the time ... neither case excuses the act, and I hope he gets the punishment a court of law determines ... that the girl is compensated and looked after ..... and if Fainu is the later rather than the former , I hope he too gets the support and re-education he needs ...

However, Everybody seems to be missing the part about Manly contacting the NRl and discussing the situation with them BEFORE promoting him .... and the NRL's Integrity commission stating that there was no case for standing him down prior to the case going to court ....

Heaven help the day when we start suspending players by accusation rather than conviction .......
Although I am not condoning his actions at all, his problem sounds like a mental problem to me and in specific, an immature Frontal Lobe/prefrontal cortex.

His brain has obviously not fully matured and he is incapable of making rational decisions at this stage of his brain development.

To quote US Pediatrician Cara Natterson, MD:

"Our brains mature from the bottom to the top, and from the inside out. It takes until our early 20's to have full brain maturation. Why is this important? It's important because the frontal lobe, which is the very last part of the brain to develop and mature, is the part of the brain that makes consequential decisions. It's the part of the brain that weighs different factors, and decides what's right."

and a further quote from MentalHealthDaily.com:

"Although brain development is subject to significant individual variation, most experts suggest that the brain is fully developed by age 25. For some people, brain development may be complete prior to age 25, while for others it may end after age 25. The mid-20s or “25” is just an average age given as checkpoint for when the brain has likely become mature."

Or he could have been suffering from concussion at the time.

Not sure where I said it was OK?

I said its an overreaction to say he should never play footy again.

As for standing him down. If he has plead guilty, yes. If not - how can you possibly say that in light of what happened with Brett Stewart.

I am not condoning his actions at all. I have daughters.

But from a purely objective perspective of what other players (past and present) have done, calling for a lifetime ban is completely excessive.

I agree NB. I definately do not condone one bit what he has done. Stupid and naive to say the least, but there are players playing now who have done far worse than this kid, who have also re-offended and are still playing and on big dollars too.
To say never play NRL again we all know is over the top because it wont happen. If Manly terminate his contract, I guarentee he will be picked up by another club.
Let him have his day in court and Manly can also heavily fine him and see whether he has learnt his lesson.
It is obvious that whatever the NRL is or is not doing in teaching these kids about respecting women is not working.

It is obvious that whatever the NRL is or is not doing in teaching these kids about respecting women is not working.

That, but it’s also values their families should be instilling, for one.

Secondly, the hero-worshipping of footy ‘stars’ from a young age has been going on for decades; even at the local level, you have certain girls throwing themselves at the star player/s at 14/15 years of age. I’m sure that increases exponentially when you’re looking at an NRL career rather than A grade.

Throw into the mix that it’s very, very common these days for people to be blasé about exchanging naked or near-naked selfies (not like back in the day, where you’d be embarrassed to go to the Kodak shop and get the nerdlinger behind the counter to develop your dirty pictures for you, then hand the hard copy to your potential suitor...)...

I can see how there’s a grey area where you might not quite get that just because girl A was ok with you filming her and swapping photos/videos, girl B isn’t.

It also begs the question of what actually happens in these seminars ALL clubs give to their players regarding social media and how to treat the public and what situations may arise etc.

We’ve seen on tv for years now how ex players (I remember ex Canterbury player Nigel vagana running some) putting on seminars especially for the lower grades as the boys are getting ready for first grade highlighting the pitfalls of the public targeting them and also how they should respond and the do’s and dont’s of how to treat women.

It’s gobsmacking to me that he wouldn’t have had this exact scenario come up in one of those seminars so what was he doing in those classes? Sleeping?

Has he been living under a rock all his life? How could someone think this would be acceptable?

I’m waiting for the obligatory defence of “someone took my phone and posted it without my knowledge” maybe it could’ve happened but sounds a lame excuse.

Was it only after the charge he then decided he wanted to do the Mormon mission?

I’m furious as I really thought this kid was a bright decent youngster with a big future at our club.

While it’s not the crime of the century, IF found guilty there should be a severe punishment coming his way and Manly management can take a long hard look at themselves for bringing more heat on the club (and to Fainu) while this is played out in the courts and media.

As a reserve grader the media and public wouldn’t have taken much notice but by us pushing so hard to get him in first grade the last couple of weeks, his name is now known by more than just the casual fan.

If he does get found guilty and we sack him, someone else will only pick him up so I’d like us to come up with our own punishment. Let him take up his mormon mission and when he comes back he can re-join the club and do some community service work and given he would’ve finished his mission....this should be something he would embrace. Try to turn a bad situation into a positive one.

Very disappointing situation all round and I feel for the poor girl who has been subjected to this. It’s something she may never live down even though it was no fault of her own.

So we base our moral compass off the Nrl now do we? They obviously set great standards...

Sorry mate, I find any violent or sexual misconduct against women abhorrent and disgusting. If proven to be true, this IS sexual misconduct and should be treated as such. Again only if alleged action is true..

So ...... our only disagreement is .... that I am prepared to wait until a court deals with the matter before I burn him .....

'...intentionally filming a sexual act and then posting it on social media.

The Saturday Telegraph has been told it will be alleged a woman was made aware of the post on Snapchat and immediately contacted police....'

The woman was unaware, non consenting to filming and was made aware by someone of being exposed on the ether.

This is now being convicted regularly in our Courts.

It may serve as a lesson to other players, but they are all required to attend NRL programs on behaviour :banghead:

The Leilua and Norman incidents were all consensual recordings but non consensual broadcasting

Manly, annus horribilis :(

Also a valid point .... I don't know ...... my defence of the situation has been more to do with wild accusations of some sort of cover-up or incompetence ...

... perhaps they are in possession of all the facts and feel that his vile actions are at the lower end of the vile act scale, and that a probable result of the court will not be "career" ending ......

Mate I'm 50, still waiting for the "fully matured" to be complete!

Buzz Slothdrunk is also the Sharks super fan, the same Sharks that employ Seggy who is himself in a naughty little video with his mate Norman. Hard to get all self righteous unless you also call the Sharks a disgrace.
