Five years and a billion dollars later NRL is broke

Yeah, bloody player welfare!
Well I for one think that the game has gone too far with protecting the player...RL is a physical sport and some of the things that players get penalised for now, are nothing short of ridiculous.

If that requires a sarcastic remark, so be it.

SHOOSH IV
V8 Supercars boss James Warburton is a name that continues to be whispered in rugby league circles as a future leader of the NRL.

Oh Hell No. Greenturd is bad enough but Warburton would be the death knell. He screwed Ch.10 to the point where they still have not recovered and since he took over as boss of the V8's.....its fan base has dwindled much much worse than anything the NRL currently has going on. Other than Bathurst of course and we all know that the reason there is because its, well.....Bathurst.

If you want the NRL to die a quick and very agonising death, then by all means lets get Warburton to be in charge.

@Snake I agree there are many ridiculous penalties (or penalties ridiculously not awarded) but I'm not too stressed about the rules around player safety. AFB copped a couple of weeks for what looked like a very soft shoulder, whereas Burgess got away with one on DCE. If they were consistent it wouldn't look so bad. Some lifting tackles look very innocuous but on the other hand if a blanket ban prevents another Alex McKinnon it's a good thing. Taking legs of the kicker, tackling the catcher in the air, sin bin for punching, doesn't bother me. the game is just as physically tough now as ever, we don't need the cheap shots to make it worth watching. Just my opinion.

You'd hope so. But if the reality is that the NRL is indeed broke - why are they out splashing cash around on overseas acts who cost $100,000 a 4min song? What a joke. Wouldn't you be spending less and banking the coin?... He's like a teenage kid with his first credit card.

Who decided that it is ok that Greenslimeterdburger is allowed to spend $1.5billion in tax payer money? WTF. Scary. His track record for running the NRL isn't exactly the resume that say spells out - smart spending.
Rumour has it that he has been diverting a lot of money into a cure for male pattern baldness.

To date, no joy and a lot of money down the drain.

That's around $60 per person (i believe), still not value for money for what's he's done that useless knob. Toddy is the wrong person to give power to, not only is he inadequate, but he shifts blant and uses dictator-like tactics (in dramatic terms) to protect himself

WTF is happening.
So the reactive Greenturd is slashing the throats of his workers and firing them just before Christmas time to show the NRL what a great leader he is and at the same time enjoying his lucrative contact that has given the NRL little return.
The Shame file .....

Fair enough...I feel that some of those tackle in the air penalties and lifting tackles just need to be penalised on a common sense basis. The slightest bees dick of a hint that the player was tackled in the air or lifted, and the referees are all to eager to blow the whistle. I also think the shoulder charge is fine and that the odd punch is no big deal but that's probably just my opinion too.

I think about the amount of people I know that used to watch Origin for the fire between the two opposing teams, and to think they cracked down on the punching for fear of losing fans to the sport...I actually think it's had the reverse effect and people have moved away from RL because of the diluted product.

It used to be a working class game whose target audience was primarily "blokes" and their sons. Then the PC society grew legs and now the NRL want to market the sport to every left wing minority group they can find and they're losing the interest and respect of those who formed the original nucleus of the games fan base.

Maybe I am too cynical about it and holding on to outdated values...I probably should just accept where the game is now and get on with it I suppose...there is still a lot to like about the way the game is played nowadays.

Maybe he would make it like the v8s:

Storm = ford
Broncos = Holden

No other brands of car are even racing.

V8s will soon be dead ... hope the NRL stays a round a bit longer but I'm not too optimistic ... what with Turd and his cronies and the concussion issue ... I think rugby league as we like will be soon gone too

@nightster the V8's won't be just the V8's from 2018. 6 cyl turbo's will be back on the grid. And IMO, like with Group A years ago, its eventually going to be slim pickings for the V8's.

League I am more optimistic about. Its survived crisis before and can do it again. But it will be better served with someone other than Greenturd running things.

I'm beginning to think even Salim Mehajer is looking a better option for Greenburger's job. Slightly more credibility than Todd and not afraid of thinking big. Well connected too from all reports (his mainly, but who are we to judge)
Better scratch Salim as a potential replacement. Injured in car crash this morning and taken to hospital in a neck brace. He'll be busy with whiplash compensation claim for the foreseeable future I suspect.

The trouble we all have is that even the like of Salim don't seem to be putting their hands up and pushing for the job.
Paul Kent wrote that article but that seems to be it.
Being the off season nobody has picked it up and run with it.
Like him or not, and I don't, Hadley is a mover and shaker who would be ideal to rip and tear on the issue but it's of no interest.
Grant and greenturd are safe just to ruin the game as they please.

I asked this a while ago but who can actually remove either of them??

Grant I assume could knife Greenslime , but Grants untouchable, and Toggy would have his head so far up Grants backside that he’s here for the long haul.

So they could be here almost indefinitely, that is until either have a magnanimous falling on the sword.

Actually I’d happily push both of them , on their swords ( if I could).

I'm sure John Grant announced he was stepping down as Chairman when his current tenure expires.

The Australian market simply cannot sustain two big rival football codes.

We are entering an economic cycle whereby growth and household spending is unlikely to continue as historical rates - and ultimately, it is market/sales which drive up the value of TV rights as companies look to flog their products to the viewer.

Rugby league needs to find more viewers in order to continue to grw the TV rights - and I think we all agree that the NRL is not pulling its weight in that respect.

The NRL has compromised values to maintain the TV audience - i.e. make sure Brisbane is always on TV and is winning, because rabid queenslanders have more dollars than cents, and can be easily persuaded with random ads on TV.

Whilst other sports play a smart game to open up new markets (BBL has become a family/school holiday product with a strong female viewership.... AFL has its women's comp and a stronghold in the south).... the NRL has done a poor job of identifying its logical growth markets.

NRL will go the way of the NBL back in the late 90's..... it has peaked for the time being, and will need to assume the role of a second class citizen for a while. heaven forbid it could even go the way of Union at its current trajectory.

I am no genius - not by a long stretch of the imagination. But I understand markets/marketing, and I understand growth. Right now, the NRL is shrinking to greatness.

So on 360 the panel revisited Kent's article in relation to the NRL squandering all the cash.
They served it up and Rothfield was first to call for the heads of the commission.
The sticking point is that the clubs, nswrl, qrl, etc etc have to agree and vote them out.
So because of that the possible is impossible even though most of the clubs want them gone.
Then, though, it would cease to be an 'independent' commission because clubs would have a representation on the board, not a majority but a presence.
Fmd what a mess.

The fact that four of the N R L "s clubs in Titans , Newcastle ,West Tigers and Dragons [ 25 % of the clubs ] have either been owned or dependent on receiving funds from the N R L in recent times would have probably restricted any more serious or concerted scrutiny or pressure on the N R L hierarchy and for better performance and accountability . There was [and probably still is ] some general disfunction and lack of co ordination at a senior level and with Greenberg and Grant apparently having some major differences in previous times . In terms of financial management and with the very substantial and assured income of the previous five year T. V rights and State of origin matches and so on , it can really be only considered quite a poor and critical indictment and reflection on the N R L management that there is now very little to show for some of their previous activities and the current fiscal state of its operation . It seems that Grant was pressured to leave with the pressure of most of the independent N R L clubs and some other board entity "s . so perhaps a bit optimistic but maybe soon or in future changing circumstances and unless he can lift his performance and game to some acceptable level , Greenberg will be similarly vulnerable and disposable .
