How good is the "guess what manly hates you too banner" on of spookys best. The buggers even had shirts made

Didn't realise how much banter would come from finding my old Manly flag in a back shed.
I always thought 'PUSH IT UP' was meant to urge the players to push up and back on every play and support the ball carrier in numbers. Works for me

Well there you go Jono how often have I gone to footy with you guys and consider jakie a mate but never knew that. I always thought push it up was urging the boys in defense to push it up in the line. How wrong was I lol.

Weird so did I

And that was another possible meaning that I thought that the banner meant too. As I said in an earlier post, for all that I knew, "Push it up" could mean so many things from increasing the score against the opposition to a reference to Hoppa Snr's wedgie incident.

Are you serious? A group of friends aren't allowed to have an in joke amongst themselves now? I don't know what the sign means but I in no way feel 'left out' because I haven't been filled in. It's no different to the 'in jokes' that the originals of this forum carry on with. It's just a bit of fun.

But Bones, at least those in-jokes have been opened to all and have since had their meanings explained in the Silvertails Meme section of this website via the menu banner above under "Articles - Site Information - Silvertails Memes" or by direct link at:

That's why I say it was better NOT knowing as it ended up having many meanings. This was the reason for the chant that the banner sprouted from though (back in '07 I think). Once the banner was made, the icon was born and it grew beyond the little in-joke. It was funnier watching peple trying to guess what it actually meant ;)

Now I wish someone had posted that in my prob of being a newbie thread, rather than how your usernames make me think you're all as weird as catweazle!!

Our school (which played Union) used to do a push it up chant in the *cough1980'scough* which basically meant 'get going', or like a hewitt's "C'mon!" cry.

Also the 'push it up' pic can also relate to people figuratively 'raising the roof' with their hands.

But like someone else said in reference to the original poster (OP) of the thread, that's a nice banner, a bit of history, and thanks for posting the pic.

Good morning to all you manly fans! :)

The reason is because it's hard to explain and, when you try to, people go "I don't get it" so we gave up trying.

I'll explain it one last time: where it came from originally for me was in clubs over the past 10 years. When people raised their arms above their heads, palms flat, facing the air and did a "standing push up" that was called "pushing it up". It might be called something else as I can't find many photos of it. However, singers from that style of music or DJ's would call this out at bars/clubs and people would know what to do. See photo below:
Pushing-it-up.jpg

It started as a piss take of this (as a lot of us don't like that kind of music) and moved on to something bigger. Thus, the sign, and everyone talking about it, wanting to know what it means. A lot of the players didn't understand at first. George knew straight away, thus why he does it after every game. We love you George btw. It's now an icon of the club, and that's it.

If you still don't understand, then you never will and there is no point asking again. A lot of chants, banners and other comments made at footy games around the world don't have much meaning to them, but people gravitate to them. It doesn't have to mean anything. Do I need to bring up "I'm forever Blowing Bubbles"? What the hell does that have to do with Football? However, everyone knows when they hear that, they are singing West Ham's song. You can't explain why, that's just the way it is.

So now you know, and it will probably ruin the feeling for it, but it will still remain an icon of the club.

Thank-you for the explanation Jono. At least now I know what the background meaning of the banner is all about. I can't really say that I understand the relevance of it to football but at least now I can give some form of answer to anybody else who asks me what it means and I suppose that those players who didn't know what it was all about were informed by George and now understand.

And Napper, pull your head in. Nobody was treating anybody like a terrorist.

The relevance to football i thought was pretty easy to understand. As others have said pushing up in the defence and line and with the ball carrier etc. This is what I always thought it related to. Thanks to Jono for filling everybody in about the meaning behind it.
Some might say my Eagle Rock banner is pretty plain and simple - but to me it reminds me of my friends and family dancing around on the hill to the song when we were younger after a win. The reason I decided to make it was in about 2006/2007 when at the time there werent too many banners about and just wanted to show my colors.

EagleRock40, you have misunderstood my reply. I was speaking in terms of Jono's explanation:

In my opinion, Jono's explanation has nothing to do with football but as I and others have stated, "Push It Up" can be interpretted in other ways to relate it to football.

I think that globaleagle has hit the nail on the head with what Jono was trying to explain:

and a look in the Urban Dictionary for "raise the roof " http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=raise+the+roof gives a good explanation for us older guys to understand a lot better.

Yes assume it's the MR Push it Up...we have on here, or is it the future MRS Push it Up??

Regardless welcome

Odds on it's MR Push It Up, I sent him an email yesterday about this post, and a few hours later we have a new member. 2+2=5 !!

In line with the original intention of the thread I thought I’d add a bit more "History"

The “No one likes us” banner was made by the wife of Brett P (AKA Northern Eagle) and he first unveiled it at the Robina Tavern before the Titans game at Skilled in 2008.

From memory that was the first time we’d arranged for the MWTS to meet there and it was absolutely packed with Maroon and white clad supporters (It looked like the Leagues Club when the boys are playing at Brooky!)

I heard a massive cheer and looked over to see him holding up the banner.

His inspiration for it was that he had heard a group of pommy Manly fans (???) singing it at Suncorp in 2007 after we’d beaten the Broncos there.

You can also see him proudly showing it in the intro to the official 2008 GF DVD collection.

It also features heavily in the photos on the Manly Warringah Travelling Supporters facebook page (there are some great pics and vids on there so worth a look?)

He donated it to me at the Leagues Club during the post final celebrations as he can’t get to many games and didn’t want it just sitting in a cupboard.

In return, he got the “No One Likes us….We don’t care!” T shirt I was wearing at the game.

I’d had them printed and sold tthem to raise funds for the Brookvale Development fund (I sold around 170 of them from memory!!) - Thanks again to Dan who let me use this site as part of the on-line sales process.

The banner has had a fair bit of TV coverage since then, has been around the country and to the WCC in the UK and to NZ for Warriors trips (and will again in Feb/Mar 2012) and is popular with fans who want to have a photo taken with it.

Funnily, it is generally a talking point for the locals when we travel to away games and they seem to enjoy the humour in it.

The only “regular” NRL ground it has not been to is Canberra as we have not played there since I acquired it.

Which leads us in to the “My Garden Shed” which originally sung there - I first heard it being sung with any enthusiasm at Shark Park when we had that huge night in 2009 when we mobbed that South West corner of the ground (After trying for hours to find the trophy room in "Sharkies" - all we found was an empty cupboard...)

For some reason we had a huge showing of supporters that night (That was when it was freezing cold and there were those lads who went topless with M-A-N-L-Y on their chests in maroon face paint?) and footage of the group was seen on MWTV on the official site for the first time.

It was a huge night and I've since heard that the CSSC were blown away at how much better our support of the team was than theirs that night.

The Garden Shed song has since become very popular, is sung with “gusto” on the supporters bus when we first see the away teams ground and whilst not really making a lot of sense it does fit our profile as “Silvertails” (rightly or wrongly!)

It's a regular at games (but not every 5 seconds despite Cambos best efforts at Suncorp last season!!!)

The players were obviously curious as they asked about it when we joined them for drinks after the Warriors game in Auckland at Easter last year and loved it when the fans gave them a belting rendition of it!

The “Push it up” banner has also been around for a while – was featured in the Manly Daily (and then when the owners got engaged at the 2011 GF) and seen on TV a fair bit.

I’m not too hung up on the meaning as I know the people who carry it and see it everywhere – the players love it and most of them have signed it or had their photo taken with it at some stage and as mentioned give us the push it up hand signal (especially at the big away trips when we are there in numbers)

A chant of "PUSH IT UP"....and the abbreviated "'....SH IT UP" generally has people joining along.

The guys above have given their explanation as to where it came from and that has always been good enough for me.

One of my favourite’s was the one Sundance made for the trip to Melbourne for the tie in 2009 “40 – 0 Grapple that!” (It’s seen on the facebook page of the MWTS)

We were at the old Olympic Stadium for the last time, had a good group travel down who were in good voice and supported the boys to a win and the locals hated it!

DJ Spook has had some good press with the “Guess What Manly Hates You Too” banner from the 2011 GF and is selling T shirts with that slogan to help raise cash for a trip to the UK for the WCC.

I’ve bought one and will love wearing it around the place – have a look on ebay if you want one (great Chrissie present and especially for those of you who live out of town and cop it from the locals when they know you are an Eagle?)

Only about 9 weeks until we get on a plane to head to the UK for the WCC!!!

“I’m leaving…on a jet plane,
to see Manly beating Leeds again…..”

“Guess What Manly Hates You Too”
That is my favourite sign

As for Push It Up Manly,I could tell you but everybody looks at it a different way so why spoil it...
