Galvin

Whenever, one of these scenarios bobs up where a player takes unders to sign at a club, I can only think of one bloke.

Some at the NRL must have very short memories.
Some at the NRL weren’t at the NRL when the Glenn Stewart situation arose and the Glenn Stewart scenario is nothing like the Galvin contract.Stewart/Manly were trying to do a contract that was well below market value.Galvin will be paid market value.Just because the Tigers were offering ridiculous overs for him, doesn’t mean that’s his market value.Would any other club offer Galvin a million a season?

I dislike the eels but he apparently advised them last Friday that he was joining them on $800k per year, then reneges & joins the Dogs for $700k! DCE MKII…..so happy to accept almost $500k less per year than what he would have earned at the Tigers? Wow that just does not sound right to me lolol. 19 years old & knocks back $1.2m for $700k??
So he’s doing this coz Benji wasn’t a good enough mentor for his playing career but Ciraldo is? At the Eels he would have had Moses to help nurture him. At the Tigers he had Benji & Luai. Who at the Dogs is gonna look after his development? Burton? Sexton?
There’s definitely something else in play here in my opinion! $1.2m to $800k to $700k….
I’d say $700k plus a lot of paper bags!!!
When they've got a pub pokies benefactor whose even more shady than Politis anything is possible. Another outright rort that the spineless nrl will do nothing about.

I get that people are suss about Galvin taking ‘unders’ at the dogs but personally I do not think his situation is comparable to previous “market-value” determinations…

Galvin is a kid - a very good kid but still a kid… he is in his 2nd year of grade with a club that were the wooden spooners last year…

Yes he has potential (obviously) and yes he was offered $1M per year by his existing team but that should not mean he is shackled to that club… the kid is at the start of his career and should be able to make career decisions that are based on growth, coaching, family, lifestyle, whatever…

once he actually wins something or takes a team to finals then, yes, I agree that teams should (will?) not be able to table offers $300K below the offers of other teams but, right now, his ‘market value’ is still to be determined imo…

Not saying the dogs are NOT pulling out paper bags but the kid should be allowed to choose his own direction …

100%, kind of makes me think the Tigers new all along where he was going and thought they’d try and do a Gus on Gus, possibly inflated his price knowing full well Galvin was done at the Tig’s and wouldn’t take the contract regardless. NRL sets or accepts his contract value based on their assessment, said it before, you can pay overs, but not unders.

I agree - market value can't be based on the potential of a 19 year old who has only played 1.5 years of first grade footy & achieved nothing, it can only be based on his experience & what he has achieved thus far.

What the Tigers offered him doesn't automatically equate to market value.

Not especially just about Galvin ... but clubs certainly do pay simply for potential. Example, 500k each for 4 years for Samuela and Latu!!

Anyone know if there are limits on what clubs can spend on players in the junior comps? Clubs such as Storm and Chooks seem to somehow stockpile heaps of the best kids. It wouldn't only be about money but money would be part of it surely.

Oh absolutely, clubs can & do pay overs for certain players, but that doesn't automatically mean that's the market value of those players is the point I was trying to make.

You may be right but if market value is not what the market will pay.. then what is it?!!
I think it has to be determined across multiple criteria such as proven performance of the player, existing contract value of the player, age of the player and an average of multiple offers…
If a player is on minimum wage currently and only has 2 offers (of say $400K and $700K) then who is to say that either is the actual “market value”?
However, if they are currently on say $500K and have the same 2 offers then $400K appears to be “below market value”…

The kid has only won a wooden spoon and has been put on a pedestal by the GM of Football for Canterbury for 18 months.

This whole thing has a smell about it for about a year.

The lies that Gus has been found out for reinforce that.

I think the kids reputation is going to take a long time to be repaired from this if at all.

Similar to DCE from his backlflip to the Titans the RL community never really appreciated DCE after that.

I already know most fans are deathriding him and the Dogs for the way it's all been handled.

The Kid has been put on a Pedestal by his own admission on the field
The Kid is a Talent not Doubt about that

Gus is a Great Investment and Asset to his club and the proof is in the pudding because he puts his Club first and the Media circus last .

As far as players reputation goes
It is all about the Great Playing Legacy in their careers that they live behind that will live on
And Galvin has the Talent that DCE has to do that

I think there are some differences mainly he is a fair bit younger than DCE and also the world has moved on in the 10 years or so since DCE first did his backflip
