Garrick

Reubs had 134m today with 45m post contact, 3 tackle breaks, 2 line breaks and 2 tries including a fantastic winger’s try… also came up with a couple of good defensive reads that stopped vermin momentum…

Who would have thought his best position was on the wing? Oh wait, literally EVERYONE except Reuben and the coaches… Manly’s own Lomax…
Hopefully his last two outings have forever put to bed the nonsense idea that he is a centre.
Exactly my thoughts and certainly Manly's Lomax. Wish he'd suck it up and stay in his rightful (best) position.

No one has said as much, but I have always wondered if the move to centre by both Garrick and Lomax was more money motivated than anything??

Wingers don't get paid squat really. Alex Johnston at Souths is likely to break Ken Irvine's try record sometime this season or early next year, and he'd be getting nowhere near the same money that Lewis Dodd is getting to play halfback in NSW Cup at Souths.

Contracts for centres, especially the better ones, are usually a bit more than what wingers get. And don't get me wrong, I can't blame someone like Reubs for wanting to be a centre and get that much more. But sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and accept that you're much better suited to the outside, which IMO both Reuben Garrick and Zac Lomax are.

I don't know that it's as simple as wingers getting less money than centres anymore. Lomax certainly isn't getting paid less money at the Eels than he was at the Dragons, and he's still playing on the wing there.

Wingers used to be treated as something of a joke - the fast blokes who got to hang around real football players. But the role of a winger has changed so much, and they are much more important to a team than they used to be. Look at someone like Brian To'o, who makes the yardage of a forward, is safe under the highball, and also an amazing finisher. Even Josh Addo-Carr in his heyday was a hugely influential player.

And centres are often used like an extra edge forward, which is why so many young players coming through get shuffled between centre and second row.

What was my point again? Oh, yeah - a good winger is probably worth more than an average centre these days. So maybe the stigma of being "just a winger" no longer holds.

Lomax was signed by the Worms as a centre. All last year it was how he was going to Parramatta to play centre because that's not where Flanagan wanted to play him. That he's now found himself on the wing shows that even a rookie head coach (though a fairly experienced assistant coach) like Ryles can see that he's a better winger than he is a centre.

Its the same with Garrick. He's OK at centre, but he's much better on the wing. The sooner he accepts it the happier he might be.

As for the part about wingers ... I totally agree.

It's always about the mighty $, isn't it

The sooner Reuben bites the bullet the better.

As Dirty Harry once said, " A man has got to know his limitations", this applies to Garrick

Lomax did indeed take a pay cut to go play centre at Parra..around 150k per season less from memory

Must be nothing else to talk about except bag Garrick…….again. Who’s next week? Aloiai, Brown, Turbo, Koula, Sipley, Saab. Some are hard to please!

Despite all the bagging of Garrick he now sits 8th all time for Manly on 91 tries in 154 games at a strike rate not that far behind Phil Blake.

I also note that Saab is now 19th on the try scoring list for Manly with 67 in 91 games. 0.74 strike rate which is higher than Snake. He has deficiencies and he is working on them but the bloke scores tries.

Fair point but there’s probably more genuine football in one of Snake’s tries than all of Saab’s 67 put together 😂

I am not a critical of Rueben just the decision to keep him in the centres for as long as they did. He is a great footballer who works hard on his game and has improved his reads in defence. However he is the best winger in our club and one of the best wingers in the game. I hope he gets his goal kicking radar back and becomes our greatest every point scorer.

Garrick on the wing doesn't warrant bagging. He has been great as a winger. Long may he stay there.

Saab just needs to pull his head out of his arse. When he knuckles down he's the best winger at the club.
I’m my humble opinion, he’s never been effective at carrying the ball out of yardage so he’s a long way off being the best winger at any club. He’s also good for a drop ball at a terrible stage in a game and for a guy that’s apparently a threat in the air, he rarely brings the ball down for a try, instead drops it or tumbles over the opposition winger.

His speed can be very helpful in turning half chances into tries. Unfortunately, that’s about it.

I’ll concede on most of your points to eaglebuzz and I but think it would be fairer to say ‘most of’ Saab’s tries rather than ‘all of them put together’.
Over 90 games it is a good ‘clip’.

It was a skilful and well executed pass at speed back inside to DCE last weekend. I also think he has tried hard each year to improve his carries and has got better. As for his hands and bomb catching percentage (in attack and defence) he he continues to be a major frustration. There are credits against the debits but he needs to get more ‘in the black’ so to speak!

Yeah of course, just having a bit of a laugh.

I think Turbo has to play centre going forward and play a roving 5/8 role whilst there. Garrick to stay on wing and move to fullback if injuries. Talua gets first dibs at a vacant centre or wing position.

The effort from Garrick to chase down Anderson on the right on the 50m line in their long-range try, then sprint across the field to tackle Coates on the left touchline didn't prevent the try, but did make sure that Coates had to score in the corner. The conversion attempt from the touchline hit the inside post which ended up saving 2 points, which was the winning margin at the end of the game... great effort.

I reckon he was playing busted in the second half with a dodgy shoulder too.

He’s awesome on the wing.
