Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to compete in these Olympics, in individual events.
The criteria to do so is:
Russian and Belarusian competitors can participate in individual sports as neutral athletes if they meet "strict eligibility conditions," the IOC announced in December.
In order to be cleared to compete as an Individual Neutral Athlete, competitors cannot support the war or have been contracted to the Russian or Belarusian military, in addition to meeting all anti-doping requirements. The Individual Neutral Athlete Eligibility Review Panel, which was formed by the IOC in March, determined each athlete's eligibility.
Always good to get interesting background info on such matters .
Really just to make the point again of precedents and double standards .
International Court [ or whatever interpretation status that has these days ] ruled some months ago that the Israeli government and military had committed war crimes in Gaza [ and certainly not going to get into the rights and wrongs of that tragedy ]
So if the same criteria applied to Israeli athletes , just like Russian and Belorussian athletes , would make it almost impossible to comply . [ doping issues aside ]
Just imagine any Israeli athlete openly disagreeing or not approving of their governments or military action or general policy in relation to Gaza .
Anyway no Israeli athlete should be put in that position and if the same I O C protocols or criteria applied and on a consistent basis , would on all expectations , been excluded too .
And personally would have thought that outcome quite unreasonable and unacceptable as well .
Probably would be a whole chapter of other anomalies and examples going back in many instances since the advent of the modern Olympics .
Anyway just really pleased that the Paris games thankfully managed to be a safe [ first and foremost ] and successful outcome ..
and in the spirt of Roy and H G "s future planning event suggestions ,
I am going to nominate Moose Lassoing and pinning down as an L A competition event .
Might even be an opening for intrepid judges and a free trip there
