What a terrible day for the Manly club. I understand coaches come and go and who knows maybe the team needs a change however all manly fans consider Tooves a personal mate and to watch this absolute legend get sacked is heartbreaking.

Especially since he has done a pretty good job and represents the club with such dignity.

They are saying on the daily Tele it will happen Wednesday and the payout has not been finalised yet !!
I find the timing of this whole 2v sacking infuriating
They could have flicked him in October - but no let's take the Members monies knowing that by distracting the Coach, the on field results will be compromised @

This week too, instead of 2v being able to do his job and build on the results of last week, he is instead being humiliated in the office, fighting for his contracted remuneration :punch:

Pathetic operational tactics by the MSE Franchise:swear:

You want to see how a CEO takes on his responsibilities, Then watch Matt Gidley fronting the media about Stones sacking and why. But more importantly giving the players 6 weeks to show some heart for their club. It's about time someone shone the focus on player mediocrity and apathetic attitudes, instead of blaming the coach.

I love Tooves and wish that the club would let him at least see out his contract until the end of next season. However, at the same time I will support this club no end and am prepared to give Barrett a go.

So he's not a Manly bloke. Neither was Graham Lowe and while he didn't get us a premiership, he went ok considering.

Every coach had to start somewhere. Was Tooves not a rookie coach? Des was as well when he took over. Hell, even Bozo was a rookie coach when he took over the job at the Rorters after he retired from playing. Wayne Bennett, Jack Gibson, Tim Sheens, Craig Bellamy, Warren Ryan, Phil Gould.....same thing and all of that list (bar Tooves) went on to win multiple premierships.....23½ in fact (½ for Bennett's SL win in 1997) . And that number could easily improve this year.

Some coaches fail, some don't. I don't think Tooves has failed, I just think he is a victim of circumstances beyond his control. And quite frankly I don't want Barrett to fail because that means that Manly is not winning games.

Imagine if Tooves went to the Knights as the smh are reporting. I wouldn't be surprised though if Tooves ends up as an assistant somewhere else. A lot of ex first grade coaches do.

Hope he gets the Australian gig.
He would choose mad dog as an assistant...

Hard to imagine Toovey coaching against Manly. But... people pay very good money for NRL coaches. Very, very good money...

Just on criticism of Tooves' selections. Name another coach in the NRL who, going into what was an important game for us against the Cows, would have named a 7 game rookie still playing U/20's in Tom Trbojecic on the wing in front of a proven international back such as Peta Hiku.

I know Hiku had a bit of a shocker on the night, but would we have been better off with Tom on the wing? The truth is that we'll never know the answer, but having seem Tom's defence this season on the wing (he needs some work) I suspect it wouldn't have been much different unless he managed to grab an intercept or two.

And as for BJ over Burgess.....remember that BJ is only just back from a serious back injury. He's seriously underdone having hardly played at all this season. Regardless that he's no world beater, at least Burgess had match practice on his side and no injuries to speak of at the time. The Pom was probably the safer bet.

Given the same choices I probably would have selected the same side Tooves did. I know Tommy scored a double the week before against the Tits, and he played ok the last time we played NQ. But the Cows are a much better side than the Coke Coast are and Tooves obviously felt that Hiku's experience would serve the team better. It just didn't work out on the night and really, the whole team looked kinda flat.

I will admit though, I am still puzzled by the Hasson selections. I'd rather JSL and his seemingly boundless enthusiasm than Hasson.

Hi all
I haven't posted before but do spend a lot of time reading the posts. Really disappointed with the whole Toovey saga. Whether he is a good coach or not is hard for me to tell but I do love his passion for the club. Just on the BJ issue and possibly playing against the Cowboys, I do feel like sharing something. I was lucky enough to be in the 'Chairman's Club' for the Cowboys game. BJ spoke to us before the match and said that he was still a few weeks off an NRL return. He did play some minutes in NSW Cup the week before but that was really only a tester to see how his back handled some full contact and back to back sets. He said it all went very well but was a process of building up strength and match fitness so he was nowhere near a return v the Cowboys. I'm sure Tooves would have loved to pick him but he was not a realistic option.
Lets hope this whole mess gets sorted soon.

I don't get this change for the sake of change thing. This is the kind of pissweak attitude you see from managers in business, paint the grass is greener on the other side picture get some support from a big wig smoking his cigar, make changes then get all the pats on the back before running away to a bigger paycheck before the change has time to sink in and turn to sh!t leaving others to clean up their sh!t.

We have finally stopped changing our side every week and got some troops back and we have won 67% of our games since then. Before we got smashed by injuries late last year we were running first, then changes started.

The only change that we deperatly need is consistancy on and off the field. How is any of this going to stop injuries?

Too many fans here are taking the placebo and thinking they have cured their cancer.

Welcome...
Great to hear some first-hand info on here. Of course, you wont be believed - you should have said that you heard it in a cafe somewhere.;););)

By the way, I was reading an on-line rag last night (Sportal?) and Z was being quoted as having said (amongst other things) that it all relates to events of October last year.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey has reportedly been handed at least a 24-hour stay of execution after he and the club failed to reach a payout settlement on Monday.

A meeting was held to finalise the details of Toovey's imminent departure - set to be announced this week - but according to News Corp Australia reports parties couldn't quite finalise the deal.

The embattled Sea Eagles mentor is expected to remain at Brookvale until the end of the season, with Penrith assistant and Country Origin mentor Trent Barrett set to be named as the incoming coach and John Cartwright to come in as his assistant.

Toovey's coaching record at Brookvale is a good one: he has taken Manly to a preliminary final, a grand final and a semi-final in the three seasons since he took over from Des Hasler. But he has seemingly paid the price for his lack of support for former Manly back-rower Glenn Stewart in his contract negotiations last year before he signed with South Sydney, and for aligning himself with the former Quantum faction at Manly before the Penn family took a 90 per cent share in October.

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns, who is on the Manly coaching staff, told Channel Nine's Sunday Football Show that he wasn't sure what was happening at Brookvale and whether he will be on the Sea Eagles' books next year, amid reports 14 players will be shown the door at season's end.

"I don't know what's going on, I haven't spoken to anyone," Johns said.

"From the effort the players put in (yesterday) it doesn't look to be affecting them. I'm not there when they are socialising, but as a group at training they all seem pretty happy."

Manly host Brisbane in Gosford on Saturday night, and are set to be without Steve Matai who suffered a shoulder injury in the win over the Warriors. Ligi Sao has suffered a possible season-ending ACL injury, while Tom Symonds and Luke Burgess (both leg) are under injury clouds too after the Sea Eagles finished the match against the Warriors with an empty bench.

Don't tell me they are trying to screw him on his payout !

MANLY coach Geoff Toovey will be finally, formally and dramatically sacked within the next 72 hours.

The controversial decision will end four months of innuendo and speculation about Toovey’s future at Manly.

The Daily Telegraph understands Manly is likely to hold a press conference to officially announce Toovey’s demise this Monday or Tuesday.

Manly’s board held a four-hour meeting on Thursday night but directors claimed Toovey’s position was not on the agenda.

The club will however summon Toovey to a meeting when he returns from Auckland, where Manly play New Zealand Warriors on Saturday at Mount Smart Stadium.

Toovey still has another year to run on his current contract. He is expected to see out this year as head coach.

Panthers assistant coach Trent Barrett will shortly be announced as Toovey’s replacement.

Manly are still undecided whether to announce Barrett’s appointment at the same media conference where they reveal Toovey’s dumping.

Barrett’s new coaching assistant, John Cartwright, won’t be formally named until later in the year.

Manly board members claim to have told Toovey “several times” in recent weeks that he was unwanted beyond this season.

Those same directors were angry Toovey continued to publicly deny being told he was to be axed.

Toovey left Australia for Auckland on Thursday morning.

Geoff Toovey’s future looks sealed after months of speculation.

The impending decision to sack Toovey will no doubt anger some Manly fans, who are fiercely loyal to the club’s former star halfback and captain.

Poor results this year did, however, make the decision easier for the club’s board.

It is understood Toovey has spoken in depth about a financial settlement with Manly chairman Scott Penn.

Penn is happy to pay Toovey his full entitlements.

One source close to the club said: “We wanted to be respectful and give Geoff every chance to prove himself.

“Other clubs have moved their coaches on a lot earlier in the season. But the results just haven’t happened. The reality is he won’t be coaching at Manly in 2016.

“We are now working through the process to crystallise a settlement.

“We want Geoff to be part of the club. He is a life member and has been with the club for a long time. But it’s a bit too raw at the moment to determine whether he will want to stay.”

Manly will formally offer Toovey a role at the club. It is unknown just yet whether he will accept or reject the offer.

Penn could not be contacted on Thursday.
F@ck Zorba & the Penns, they'll brig this club to its knees, never thought I'd say it but I hope they get the spoon, this year or next !
They've lost me
