Jack Bird

Just reading a player swap with Bird heading our way and Nathan Brown to the Tigers is on the cards

In terms of squad balance, I can see that it works for us with another back row option
Wow. Nathan should retire gracefully. He gave us his all but apart from some adrenaline inducing runs off the back fence (where he got smashed and rarely made a post contact metre) he didn't add that much. I really respect what he tried to but he needs to retire for his own sake. Bird can still off some agro grunt to the pack as a back up but hopefully he's on minimum wage.

Us bottom feeding clubs do tend to shuffle mediocre players around amongst ourselves, dont we
Certainly seems to be the way.

We didn't see much of Brown this year, mostly due to injuries, but I did see Bird run out for the Tigers a few times and was surprised how truly awful he was. I actually remember wondering if he was now one of the worst players in the NRL. So of course he'll end up at Manly.

Agree. He has the spindly legs of Ryan Papenhuyzen with the speed of Nathan Brown.

This thread is going to feel like deja vu…

Fair enough if you think Seibold is a sh*t coach but IMO he has done enough to prove he can find a written off player in the scrap-heap & get them up for a season.

Lodge was class before the ACL & is still decent enough now on a low contract.

Seibold got torn apart for the Brown signing. Should have only got a 1 year extension but no one can deny he was good for us in 2024 & a fan favourite.

TKO another ‘washed up’ player that turned out pretty good… Fair to say he was our best forward this year?

Time will tell with Bird but I think it’s pretty stupid to keep writing these guys off without giving them a chance

What Bird has is a fast play the ball, when tackled he's like a fish out of water scrambling to get up. Could go alright on a low sign on.

fox refers to the Bird Brown swap then says this...first I've heard of Viliame returning

Manly powerbrokers have already recruited Viliami Fifita from the Dragons and are also expected to re-sign veteran Siua Taukeiaho.

So… we replace someone who would be really low in the pecking order, with someone who also will be really low in the pecking order.

What’s the fuss about? You need these players.

If it doesn’t pay off, we gain another depth second rower, on the level of MCK. If it does pay off, we might get a suitable 14. All for low coin.

We’re not talking about first choice 17 members here.

He was our best forward this season. Played well above expectations to become our forward leader.

This in itself is a problem we have.
I don’t disagree with that. Seems the club finally realised this too which is why we’ve finally signed a few good younger props.

I don’t think Brown would have seen any first grade next year so it makes sense to me for a utility to come in. Even if Bird doesn’t add much I don’t think we are losing out with this swap

Why not someone 10yrs younger then?!

Maybe I’m speaking prematurely with a bit of pessimism but I don’t have much confidence in our recruitment under the Penn administration.
Next year maybe the same as this year or…..

Bird is probably taking the Chee Kam role.
Very experienced, but history of injuries dulled his early talents.
A decent depth player and credible bench option.
Did play 17 games last year - 14 on bench, 3 at 2R, one at centre (for a team that was not the wooden spoon candidates of recent history)
