Newcastle Knights to be fined
It has emerged that Newcastle failed to lodge its injury pre-nomination to the NRL prior to the Auckland Nines. Jarrod Mullen will be asked to front an NRL-appointed medical team for an examination, and will be forced to play through pain for the next four months or risk a $10,000 fine if he is unable to play due to the injury sustained in the tournament.
Other injured players including Lachlan Coote will be safe from fines because their clubs lodged the required injury nomination forms. Manly has denied speculation that an injury to David Williams was faked in order to avoid sanction from the NRL.
Next year's Nines rules will stipulate that at least 5 of the top 17 players from each club must be injured during the event.
