Sam Newman loves the NRL

Poor bas*ard is in for the shock of his life...

CONTROVERSY and Sam Newman go hand-in-hand these days as he seemingly never drifts too far away from the media spotlight. This time he’s back again with another bombshell take.

After ripping into the AFL over their support of the same sex marriage vote, Newman is now declaring his love for the NRL while stating he refuses to watch the AFL thanks to the umpiring.

“I don’t like the way necessarily it is played and the umpires have driven me away from the football. No one could care less if I go or not.

“The umpiring is disgraceful in a contact sport, it is almost cringe worthy to watch three people try to manipulate a game into almost a non-contact sport, so I refuse to watch it.”

Newman revealed plans to travel to Sydney on Sunday to throw his support behind the Melbourne Storm in their Grand Final battle against the North Queensland Cowboys.

“Rugby league is an honest, straight forward, no nonsense, tough and relenting game ... a far cry from what ours has turned into,” he said.

Either he doesn't know the League rules, doesn't watch Amy games, or just delusional....

He will soon find out Refereeing in the NRL, is a total farce!

He's just pissed off at the AFL and knows this is a good way to get back at them by pumping up their rivals. Plus he's a media whore and know's he'll get plenty of attention from it. Please don't take this guys comments too seriously.

I like Sam but I think he's had too many to the head.
Our game is just as f*cked.

Sam Newman isn't actually as bad as his media/public persona makes him out to be. He's actually a very intelligent and articulate person and a lot of what he says on television is done simply to generate controversy.

Did you know that Sam Newman once claimed the pole position for the Sandown 500 motor race? Yep, he did back in 2002 driving a Ferrari 360 Challenge. True story.

It would've been a support race

Nope, it was the actual Sandown 500. In 1999 there was a dispute between V8 Supercars management and the Light Car Club of Australia who promoted the Sandown circuit. As a result, the 500 was moved to the Queensland Raceway in Ipswich for a few years. Procar Australia who ran the Australian Nations Cup, GT Performance and GT Production Car championships took up the running of the Sandown 500 in 2001 and 2002. Newman was driving for Nations Cup team PHR (Prancing Horse Racing) Scuderia at the time (as team mate to John Bowe no less). At the 2002 500, Newman qualified his Ferrari in the top 10 for the shootout. He was first on the track and set his time. As he finished his lap, it started bucketing down with rain and he was the only driver to get in a dry lap. His pole time was over 6 seconds faster than Jim Richards in 2nd place.

It remains the all-time record margin from first to second in qualifying for the Sandown 500 and unless a similar situation ever happens again, like Peter Brock and Jim Richards' record 6 lap win at Bathurst in 1979 its a record that is unlikely to ever be broken.

Intelligent and articulate enough to say that NRL is a relenting game - pretty sure he meant unrelenting lol

Actually, the way the game is softening these days perhaps relenting is actually apt.

As you were.
