Match Stats

This sadly is our reality .....

Manly have equalled an unwanted club record conceding more than 20 points in six straight games.

Des Hasler’s men finished fourth last season but they’ve struggled in particular against the top teams in 2022.

The Sea Eagles have dropped all seven games against top-eight opposition this season, and all nine games against Storm or Panthers since 2020.

“I’m just disappointed by our application, we just don’t give ourselves a chance,” Hasler said.

“We don’t set it up, we don’t execute well enough.

“It’s about building that pressure and field position and we just didn’t give ourselves a chance and it’s something we need to fix.

“Disappointing, we can’t excuse that.”
is all that not down to coaching and on field leadership ?

Well....

I got carried away with all the storm injuries and changed my tip to Manly.

Of course I forgot the cowardly act of too often not contesting bombs,
the refs not calling things like taking out taufua and right angled play the balls,
the refs calling out every little thing they can ping manly on,
It's past the refs, Manly are just a stupid ill disciplined moronic team. Penalty after penalty, and
the lack of execution. Dropped balls, no set plays, galactically stupid off loads. these guys are just boofheads.

I don't raise the bar that high for footballers in general, but at times their footy IQ must be in the negative digits. It's like they want to brag about how they put in a good effort but just fell short.
Summed it up well, thought Keppie tried really hard and no errors I think.

Having watched the last few games we get constantly hammered with penalties and six agains against us early in the matches and it happened again last night. We defended our line repeatedly early and by the end of the 1st half we end up with 40% possession then in the 2nd half get blown away because of the defensive effort. We get consolation 2nd half penalties to make it not a lop sided penalty count. We are gassed in the 2nd half. Now do we genuinely deserve to be penalised because we are serial offenders or are we ill-disciplined? I wonder if it might be easier to let in a try and get down the other end of the field.

We never win the 50-50 calls, they miss obstructions against us and opposition players playing the ball facing the sideline. Co-incidence?

Last night was a real opportunity missed.

The Channel 9 commentators actually got it right for once. Even though both sides were injury-hit, Melbourne's 'class' got them through.

Manly used to be described as a team with 'class'.

What is 'class' - at least in a rugby league sense?

Performance under pressure, instinctive knowledge of what to do in a given circumstance, inventiveness, 'playing smart', accountability. Not just effort - I saw effort from Manly, but not the level of across the board enthusiasm and teamwork of Melbourne - very sad to say. Mostly it just boils down to being better in all aspects than your opposition, and looking composed and in control while you do it.

Last night's game disappointed me more than the two losses to the Eels and Bunnies before that. I can point to circumstances in those games that made it very hard for us to win.

Not last night. Last night we just weren't 'good enough'.

If you rated our players versus their Storm opposites, you would be hard pressed to say which of them outplayed their opposite number. People have been bagging DCE - and yes, Hughes was more influential for the Storm than DCE was for Manly - but Foran (who tried very hard) was also clearly outplayed by Munster.

I thought Garrick and Tuipulotu tried hard, and would have lost no fans. Croaker also get an 'A' for effort. I don't know why Davey came off when he did -perhaps Des thought our attack was ineffectual (which it was), and that Schuster would be an X factor.

Our 'go-forward' forwards (Sipley, Keppie, and to an extent Aloiai and Jake) didn't bend the Storm line. It's worth pointing out that Melbourne didn't really field any 'star-power' forwards - just blokes who do their job enthusiastically, efficiently and with a minimum of mistakes. Once we lost the arm-wrestle in the middle, our backs started to look (and play) disorganized. The Storm bench was almost a group of no-names - no matter, their 'system' wins again.

The Storm - the kings of the grind - ground us down again. And we knew what was coming, and couldn't / didn't stop it. Mass sackings is not the answer; individual talent / leadership / desire / fitness / injuries etc are almost side issues till we rediscover the winning Manly DNA again.

The bounce-back evident in the Parra game from Souths the week before was very good - where was that same bounce-back last night?

I don't think we're bottom 4; but until we can change some of our football fundamentals we will not be a top 4 team again.

Not bottom 4 but no further than the next 4 above that !!

I can’t wait to see @globaleagle I mean Graham Annesley justify how the Eels deserved 3 set restarts in the Manly v Melbourne game…
LOL, I was falling asleep when I compiled the list so I'm not surprised that there were errors.

I will say this about last night.

On the face of it, yes it looked bad losing 28-8, but considering that two of their tries should never have been..... The one with the sideways play the ball where they scored under the posts, and the other with a pass Troy Aikman would have been proud of that they scored near the posts.

Take away those and its 16-8 and the loss isn't as bad.
