Need a rant.

Throughout the past 18 months, one entity I think the game, the club, and the players have forgotten here is the goodwill - the fans. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and when I read a direct quote from Daly Cherry-Evans today, it really struck home.

When asked about the fans, Daly claimed, and in his words, "they are not of a concern to me". Well thank you Daly, you've certainly put things into perspective for me.

This week, Tom Symonds claimed, when talking about Foz leaving, "the club, and his team mates know what he means to our success, and that's all that matters". I questioned Tom on that front, and asked, "what about the fans, Tom?", and all I heard in reply was crickets.

Jamie Buhrer was quite vocal this week as well, sticking up for his mate. Well kudos for that. He mentioned how he felt, he mentioned how the club felt. He mentioned how DCE felt. Not once did he consider how the fans felt.

Justin Horo this week hit instagram, after DCE released this statement “I play this game for obviously my family, I play it for myself and more importantly I play it for my teammates and my coach and unless any of those groups of individuals want me gone, I won’t be going anywhere,” he said.". Horo claimed he wanted to get back in the team for DCE. He wanted to get back into the team for himself. Not once did he mention the fans, or club success.

Kieran Foran has oft been quoted as claiming that there are days he wakes and feels he doesn't want to be here. He talks about "his brothers", and he talks about how poor of a coach Toovey is compared to Brad Arthur. He talks about the medical and professional staff as key motivations. Never a mention of the fans.

Joe Kelly through this whole process has been thoroughly non-existent to fans and paying members. I wrote Joe a massive e-mail, and it was cut off at the pass, and a membership manager replied to me (albeit a fantastic reply - see below) - my issue with this, is while Tom's E-mail is great on the surface, his club, his players, his coaching staff act completely different.

The club presently I feel (and the players) have a massive divide and disconnect with the paying members and fans. They are doing nothing to settle the uneasy feeling. Someone wrote earlier on these boards, "when does a club, stop becoming a club" - well that has a lot of merit. My answer, is when you don't feel like your part of the community. Frankly, the attitudes of the Horo, Symonds, Buhrer, Foran, DCE, Watmough, Hasler, Arthur and others, go a long way to destroying that culture.

On the FLIPSIDE, as I can't just be one sided, there ARE some glowing lights for Manly. Enter Matt Ballin. Wow, what an inspiration. Talking about what the fans mean to him. Talking about how he loves the place. “I think I owe that to the club and the fans who have supported me and to myself and my reputation.". Thank you Matt. THIS, my friends, is the reason I return as a member. THIS, is the reason I support my club.

Sadly, this kind of attitude is dying fast in the game, as the players these days seem pompous, self righteous, "fans are not of a concern to me" types of arse-holes, who care nothing for anything but themselves.

I hate the AFL with a passion. But the NRL could do a lot worse than learn from their community awareness, and fan buy in schemes, even at grass roots levels. They just do it all so much better.

Hi Ryan,

Thank you for your email.

We value and appreciate all our members/supporters feedback, as without your input to the club it would not be what it is today.

The recruitment and retention plan for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles has, and continues to be, one of the best in the NRL. The NRL’s salary cap was put in place to even the playing field, yet we continue to be successful year upon year.

It’s because of this success that it’s only natural that other NRL Clubs would wish to target some of our very best players and why behind the scenes the club is working on the retention of our very best players.

In the same respect, it’s that same success and winning culture behind why so many players also want to join our great club.

So while different players, staff, management and coaches will naturally come and go over the years, the one thing that will always remain a necessary constant is you – the loyal member/fan. Without your support through membership, tickets, merchandise and events we would fail to exist.

We currently have a new management team in place who is striving to continue the clubs success and further grow our Membership base and game day attendances.

We have the most loyal and passionate supporter base in the NRL and we sincerely hope that you remain a part of the Manly family for many more years to come.

Kind regards,

Tom Jamsek – Membership, Ticketing & Match Operations Manager
Kaspersky Manly Warringah Sea Eagles

Tom Jamsek came over from Souths. Paul Grzanka (his boss) ex Souths. Luke Byrne starting next week ex Souths. Joe Kelly - Souths. Just saying.

I agree with most of your sentiment here Ryan, and that doesn't happen often.

I have never been less enthusiastic about a season of footy than I am this year.

May be great guy's but just a job for them they don't have the passion or love of the club we do

To be fair Soufs are the current off field bench mark - as long as we retain our identity

I am going to the game cause my love is 40 years strong for this club and i want to see our kids play and the boys wbo are staying.

Bugger the turmoil. Team always comes first!!!!

As a fan/customer of 55 years standing/sitting, I must say that the past six months has sucked the enjoyment from me for the club, and for rugby league in general. Tonight I'll be missing from the Brookie Hill, even though I'm a long-standing member. It's not a protest, it's more that my enthusiasm has waned. The club, and the NRL hierarchy, should never forget that without fans/customers this sport won't survive in its professional format.

I feel for you mate. At least we can empathise. It'll come back I reckon....don't know how long, but it will....and that day, we shall share a beer together on the hill (or stadium if that is built:) )

Agree 100% Ryan. Apart from Matty Ballin, the only player to take us into consideration was Willie Mason when asked about the halves leaving. First thing he said, " I really feel for the fans." Good bloke with the right values.

How about this gem from Darcy Lussick sticking up for cherry on insta.

@loohmath next time you have to pay a bill ask them if they will accept loyalty instead of your credit card details and see what they say

Someone needs to remind young Darcy that poorer people parted with their money through loyalty so that players afford anything at all. Loyalty my friend is a two way street.
Dear Darcy

Next time when you are playing in front of an empty stadium remember that the fans chose to pay their bills instead of buying a ticket the the game.

Since when should players consider football a full time job? If you are struggling to pay the bills from your football earnings why not get a real job like everyone else ****witt Lussick and don't come back to our club ever

Our so called big players might be abandoning the ship but I NEVER EVER WILL!!

Nothing will stop me supporting guys who are proud of wearing our jersey.

We are in pain right now no doubt but the i believe the club will be even better if we get our house in order.

Hi Ryan,

I know you're a very passionate supporter, as are all Manly fans. Players I feel play most importantly for a club that they think will offer them both success on the field and mateship off the field. They play for their coach, their team mates, the club culture and at the end of the day - a pay cheque to make a living. I'm sure the current crop of manly players appreciate all the fans and their support - as would most NRL players which run out onto the field in front of a home crowd cheering them on - but I don't think that would be a huge deciding factor in whether a player decides to stay loyal with their current club, or move onto a different club. They would have to decide whether the club could bring them further success, to continue to play with their close mates, whether they looked up to the coach as a mentor and to further develop their skills, did they get along with the management and buy into their future plans, how much salary would they be giving up if they stayed (in Foran's case 400k a year!)

As fans we don't know exactly what goes on behind closed doors, or we are not close mates with any of the players, we don't know them on a personal level, we can just cheer them on each week and hope for a win. When we lose, it puts a downer on the whole weekend, when we win it brings us excitement and happiness. And over the last 10 years we've had a fair share of success. We're lucky we support such a great side, and I think we will continue to be successful and still have a good year.

A few players have left, so what, Manly can rebuild and replace them. Success comes in cycles, and it's very hard these days to remain at the top for extended periods of time, Manly being the exception during the past 8-10 years. The salary cap, ridiculous rules about poaching players a year out, crazy prices teams are willing to pay to poach good players from other teams, the endless negativity portrayed by the media about Manly.

As supporters, we should always support our great side, through the **** times and the good times. Im sure we can turn it around soon, starting with a good win tonight!

Our administration team must be a lot bigger than our playing roster now.

Those of you who aren't going because your enthusiasm has waned, that's your choice and i'm not about to convince you otherwise.

But man......life gives you the opportunity to be able to see your team play....live!

I really wish I had that choice like you. It'd be awesome to see the team play live, simply awesome.

Anyway.....just a blurb from an o/s fan! :)

I understand Ryan's position, he's a very passionate customer .

I was berated on here the other day for being a Baby Boomer and not understanding the Gen Y world.

I'm starting to understand them now, I can't say I like what some of them do but if I'm going to remain a customer I have two options.

Roll with the punches
Change banks

Hi Ryan,

.... how much salary would they be giving up if they stayed (in Foran's case 400k a year!)

Most of us don't have a problem with them going for substantially extra dosh.

What we don't like is hearing that they're leaving to improve as a player and money isn't a factor.

Just say you're going - the offer was too good to knock back ( He's getting 5 years pay for 4 years work ).or stay, don't dick us around.

Simple.

We all heard he was going months ago, why didn't he?

Can I just say something in support of the support team that Joe Kelly has put together.

Our back office has been, well ordinary so to speak.

Whilst a nice guy young Michael ( last years membership manager) was well out of his depth.

We have pinched the best and brightest from Souths, who are the leader in the pack.

This, in time , can only be to our advantage , so please just be patient !!
