The spirit of 1978

Igor's bravery is the stuff of legend. There is no doubt that he is in the top 5 toughest players to have worn our jersey, he needed pain killing injections just to play. He put up the bomb in GF one that created a try for Tommy Mooney, he smashed old Dallas Donnely in the final the week before.

If Igor were playing today, he would roast the Burgess bunnies.

I remember pedaling madly home on my bike from school in '78 to my mates house so we could listen to the end of the GF replay match on the radio. Great memories, and as an 11yr old those 3 epic weeks of Manly spirit cemented it for me. Manly tragic from that point on.

You won't find a tougher Manly forward in our history than Igor. My favourite player from those early years.

The league scheduled the GF replay on a Tuesday arvo at 3pm which meant that most of us of school age were desparate to get home and listen to Frank Hyde call the game on radio, that day was one of the best of my life knowing that the team had achieved the near impossible, the love I had for the team became permanent that day and even through we have had winning teams since then and I have loved them as much, nothing will beat the feeling of 1978 for me.
