MANLY RE-SIGNING PROMISING YOUNGSTER

Fox Sports - Market Watch

Put the name Tom Wright in your little black book.

While you might not know the name, Manly fans sure do and that’s why the Sea Eagles have wasted little time extending the young gun’s contract.

A star of the NYC, Wright has inked a one-year extension.

While playing five-eighth for much of his 20s career, Wright will spend the pre-season training in the centres with a push for a round one NRL start.

Also able to play fullback, Wright was a standout in the 20s premiership-winning side with his agility and speed wreaking havoc on the opposition.

Trent Barrett is a big fan of Wright.

He was one of his first signings since taking over as Sea Eagles coach, recruiting Wright from schoolboy rugby.

The new deal keeps him locked into the Sea Eagles until the end of 2019.

Called him as a centre - not a 5/8 early....Kelly and Wright will fight for that centre spot pre season....don’t wave bye to Kelly yet - who was a scapegoat for poor inside defensive plays and for a rookie in NRL- had a damn good 2017.
Fact is Tom Wright has him for pure speed but ppl need to remember- he won’t be given latitude like the 20’s comp....but with hard work and good attitude- will become a star within 2 years imo.

Tom Wright has speed and skill other so called rookies dream of . Another damn good young centre is Parker .

it will be interesting to see how Wrights defence goes at centre - Attack he will kill it.

He is a pretty big kid so boy should be able to handle the bigger boys without too much issue.

Tom really filled out this year and with another off season should put on more muscle.

He could grow into a great Beaver style forward.
Tackle practice is much needed

Interesting . Just a year extension to hedge their bets to see if he comes on next year and if he does we have a liittle breathing room to renegotiate. Not a bad move, but he will have to really work on the physical aspects of his game if he is to make it in NRL - especially as a centre which is one of the toughest defensive spots on the field.

If he can increase his involvement in the game as centre, he's destined in my opinion to be a rep candidate before the end of '18. This kid has everything, just needs to focus. He will tear opposition backlines to threads if he continues to develop. Imagine Tom T and Tom W playing off each other. Exciting times if he stays focused.

There is definitely talent there but he is not a nrl 5/8 IMO. He is either a centre or potentially if he bulks up enough he could be a edge running back rower in the beaver mode. Smart move let's see whether TB can help him get to the next level.

This is good news. I've been fearful that Manly would have put in all the hard work developing him only for Easts to come along and offer him a brown bag inducement at the end of next season. A one year extension is a sensible offer, but if he fulfils his promises and makes it into the top grade next year then Manly must lock him up for longer.

We’ve come a long way from the Wiliame days.

Although to be fair Wiliame seems to have improved since he left us.

I just can't seem to get a set view on young Tom W. Gifted .. yes Talented ..yes NRL potential .. yes.

Still not sure if he will make the leap to stardom ... hope like buggery he does though.

Reminds me a little of Phil Blake Woodsie. Astonishing ability to create something out of nothing, but seems to go to sleep for long stretches in some games. Better defence though than Blake.

Lets be honest here, he has played 2 season of league now, one with plenty of injuries and is the ripe old age of 20. If he hasn't made the national team by now he is done.

Next

Just a reminder that Lewis played his first test when aged 21, Cam Smith and DCE 22, Thurston at 23. I think Tom Wright has plenty of time

@Bearfax and @Fluffy

I am not saying he can't or wont make it ... I am just saying that (unusually for me) I can't seem to develop a strong opinion either way ... for me the jury is still out ..

If I am honest my hesitation is more to do with his mental toughness ... don't know why ... transferring age stardom to the 78min of grind for 2min of stardom in the NRL takes grit ..

Anyway, as I said, I hope he does come on ... is a special talent if he does.

Agree, Woodsie. Talent isn't enough to make it in the NRL. Along with mental toughness, you need a healthy slice of luck - just having your body hold up to the week-in, week-out punishment. He seems to have got over a few early setbacks so here's hoping he can keep going.

Did have a fairly good season some great games but I did think Cullen was more dominant in the final and Grand final they seemed to figure him out with close marking in those games when Cullen shined
But glad he has re-signed
