Manly bracing for Tigers player raid as Fulton leaves Sea Eagles nest

Manly are bracing for the Wests Tigers to launch a raid on some of their biggest names after long-time recruitment manager Scott Fulton signed a deal to join Wests Tigers immediately.

Fulton, the son of Manly legend and NRL immortal Bob Fulton, has been head-hunted by the Tigers after his role at the Sea Eagles was diluted over the summer.

Fulton, whose sister Kristie Fulton was moved on from her administration role at the club last year, once called the shots when it came to recruitment and retention at Manly but the club has moved to a different model under new chief executive Tony Mestrov.

While Manly didn’t stand in Fulton’s way, the move could come back to bite the Sea Eagles. The Wests Tigers have already begun asking questions about the future of five-eighth Josh Schuster, who was involved in an altercation with NSW Cup player Dean Matterson — the younger brother of Eels forward Ryan Matterson — at training last week.

Schuster is contracted until the end of 2024 but question marks over his future surfaced last week following comments from skipper Daly Cherry-Evans.

“I have been playing long enough to see so many people at this club not maximise their opportunity,” Cherry-Evans said.

“That is rugby league mate – if you’re not willing to work hard enough, if you’re not willing to sacrifice, you just don’t last long. He is at a crossroads early in his career but it can be a real positive.

“This doesn’t have to be a negative for him – spending some time away to get his body right, this could be a defining moment where he takes off to that level we all know he can.”

Making matters difficult for Manly is the fact they’ve gone to war in recent months with leading player agent Mario Tartak, who is extremely close to Fulton.
Manly locked horns with Tartak over the future of rising star Viliami Fifita and were in a tug-of-war for his services with St George Illawarra before they eventually released him to the Dragons.

Tartak and Fulton worked together on luring a number of players to the Sea Eagles, particularly those from western Sydney.
They include Schuster, Jason Saab and Haumole Olakau’atu. Like Fulton, Tartak’s stranglehold on the club has been diminished under the Mestrov regime.

Talk of Fulton’s potential departure has been doing the rounds for a couple of months and he has now signed a deal to oversee recruitment and retention at the Wests Tigers alongside Warren McDonnell.
McDonnell, who was brought back to the club by close friend Tim Sheens last year despite being moved on by chief executive Justin Pascoe on two separate occasions, will focus on the pathways at the Wests Tigers, with Fulton to look after NRL.

Glad to see Mestrov is doing his best to limit power from the player agents especially Tartak.

Tartak is going to cause us some massive problems before his influence is removed from the club. Make no mistake the implosion that we are experiencing right now has been orchestrated by him. Yes, Fulton has definitely colluded in the situation, and has already spoken to players he wants to take with him. Schuster being Tigers acquisition number one. Last season it was rumoured that the two Manly players that requested releases, after rainbow gate were Haumole and Josh (S not A) We can only hope that Ola's upgrades will be enough to keep him at the club. Unfortunately, the team is divided (again). More or less along similar lines to last season. It's an extremely disappointing situation, and all we can do is back Mestrov and Co to make the right moves to resolving it.

It was a slap at training being blown out of proportion yet again
I think we have more concerns than an over heated training session
A few players are not quite on the same wave length is the issue due to outside influences
Watch for a steely performance on Friday against Broncos

you know the old saying, ...where's there's smoke there's fire..

The issues you get from the West so far in Manly's case has been trouble makers with gang connections, convicted criminals, factions who put themselves 1st and some players who have that lazy attitude. These are the type of players you cannot build a great club culture around.
That is a very broad declaration. Would you be happy to offload Josh Aloia, Sean Keppie, Taniela Paseka, Jason Saab, Samuela Fainu, Latu Fainu, Haumole, GCKT, Schuster, Koula, Weekes?

I am so tired of the constant dramas at our proud and distinguished club. It has been like an unending bout of gastroanoritus under the Penn's watch. I suppose they have given us all the Penn Centre of Excellence. How difficult is that to stomach? Surely these past 12 odd years is just a DMT hallucination and the chimes are about to go off and suck me back into reality. It all began when itty bitty Scotty Wotty played hardball with our two time premiership winning coach with his stupid performance clauses in 2011.

An event which led to Des packing his bags and going to the Dogs before Toovey is appointed coach. Nek minute Tooves is sacked for Barrett, Barrett gets punted and Des gets reassigned. Scott from marketing (ahem) goes rogue and rolls the 🌈 out in a cheap political stunt which sees Des get sacked again. The other Scott then hands over the reins to a coach responsible for claiming Brisbane's first ever spoon. Another trumpet blast rings out across the peninsular as Toovey is rehired and the Fulton's are sent packing. In between all this choose your own adventure style drama there is an the endless procession of CEO's, and the league's club is sold (for a tidy sum.) Not to mention the appointment of "I'm gonna stop the press leaks" Mestrov. Yeah the same dude who frog marched Kristie out of the joint. These Penn flops are like a fossilized dog turd spreading throughout a once mighty club.

I think that Bob's master plan only resulted in killing the Manly Culture back in 2015 when he got rid of half of the top 30 players and recruited Barrett & Cartright as the Manly Coaching Team for 2016 and forced Donny out to be replaced by that Titans reject whatever his name was.
Yes he dialled up ‘Eastern Suburbs 1979-80’ on the ‘Frank Hyde Rugby League Time Machine’ and the unwanted players, good and bad, started glowing in from the ends of the RL universe (if you were living in 1979) , aka greater Sydney.

Loved this comment in the SMH article:

I have been a Manly supporter since 1975.......

Realistically, Scott Fulton had some big shoes to fill....... and not enough copies of the SMH stuffed in the ends were ever going to make them fit.

When it gets down to tin tacks Scott Fulton is not a great loss to Manly nor will be anyone who might follow him.

We should continue trying to recruit top juniors from the West as we should look to tie up top juniors from the Nothern beaches.....as well as the Country, NZ, Central Coast, QLD, Fiji, Samoa, Russia and Mars.

Find the best young players wherever they are and try to lock em in....I mean this is obvious no?

With Scott I just see it as emptying the remaining bath water. IMO Schuster is seperate issue and it appears struggles with rehab. The value of a player is not just his talent but also him determination and self discipline. Let’s see how he responds it might be a positive turning point in his career. Fingers crossed.

It is to us.

too many bad break ups at manly all through the organisation for too long, for it to be anything but penns influence ,.cant change that-unless you buy it. Sucks

on field they have taken has taken soft options for just as long , accepting embarrassing and cringeworthy moments on a weekly basis all to well-in there stride. Leadership accepts poor outcomes because they can not demand better due to there own contributions. Its that simple. If we dont have aplayer that gets into our captain after he sacrifices the teams work than we will get NO BETTER. Thats our problem. Team alpha is too comfortable

not about last weeks game

Most players are competitors and this is not a work place that improves over time and is building in the right direction

we bring new players with more skill into a system that tolerates mediocrity where it matters most. ONFIELD.

schu is just ticking the wrong boxes at manly for his mediocrity to be celebrated
