Trump

Few days ago I believe I discussed medicaid a bit, but stumbled on a video that says a lot

It has been independently assessed that the Biden/harris administration was the biggest wasters in history, blowing $1 trillion on improper payments alone while in office. Without all that waste, budget cuts may not have been necessary.

Every country should bump up their defence spending to 5%. Hell, make it 7%. Or more!
Sure we are desperately short of houses to live in, need better hospitals and education, but a few more tanks missiles and a couple of subs would be great.
So let's arm the entire world to the teeth. What could go wrong?
How can we afford to increase defence spending when we have to pay tarrifs on exports to USA.

( But it does confirm what JFK said about military industrial complex)

Back here in the real world, we are desperately short of housing because of mass immigration, and maybe we should reduce our defence spending to zero, what could go wrong?

I agree with the sentiment here, it is crazy. The saddest thing about this it is the poorer countries say like Iran and North Korea who are spending up big on arms while many of their people suffer. It is tragic. You could even say that China or more accurately the CCP are disproportionately investing in arms at the expense of their people.Unfortunately we still live in a world where the biggest most powerful bully wins… I see one way or another we will be forced to spend more on arms….

It is an interesting one as according to the reserve bank defence is only 6% or so of the budget

I do wonder now that the first people who had to contribute to super are starting to retire (in a meaningful contribution way that is) if the large % spent on welfare and social security will start to decrease

Trumpy scores a win (of sorts) against the lower federal courts.

In short:

Donald Trump has declared a victory over "radical left judges" after the US Supreme Court issued a ruling curtailing the powers of lower courts.

The 6-3 ruling concluded that lower federal courts do not have the power to impose nationwide bans on Mr Trump's orders.

What's next?

Some specific cases have been sent back to lower courts to be reconsidered. Mr Trump's controversial order to remove birthright citizenship remains on hold for at least 30 days.

Yeah but they had to pay their way out of covid, that’s the kicker

Look at debt vs party

Seems appropriate and reasonable. You can’t have one or two biased, politically appointed judges exercising more power than a democratically elected President implementing the agenda he/she was elected on.

Not sure covid had anything to do with $1 trillion in improper payments. The bottom line is that everyone recognises debt has been growing exponentially for decades, regardless of who was in power, and we are rapidly reaching the point where hard decisions need to be made. You can argue the merits of individual actions, but at least the Trump administration has recognised the problem and is taking steps to address.

No doubt the usual suspects will say “cut the US military” but they are also the same ones saying “why are they forcing other NATO nations to increase their own military spending” and “we need to support Ukraine”. It’s a dangerous world, with plenty of real bad guys.

Yep. This is maybe a little OT, sorry, but the more that I see of the ructions of the great Presidential democracies the more hesitant I am about meddling with the features of our system. The model proposed by Keating, in which a "head of state" (which we basically need unless we want to re-engineer the entire Constitution, aiui) is elected by a very strong majority of the entire of Parliament, that I could consider living with. But maybe nothing much else.

Agree, nothing wrong with our system, just relies on a strong opposition that offers a valid alternative to maintain balance. We generally get that balance right over time I think (“progress” vs “conservatism”). The US is obviously complicated by the fact it is still more an amalgamation of strong, somewhat independent States, overlaid with a quasi republic/democracy at the federal level.

Uhhhhhhh thanks Woodside, clicked on the link, funny by the way 🤣, however, I have a bone to pick with you because the link led me to Facebook, which led me to an article about the new Bears board in WA which then somehow led to a video of a breast feeding mother.

The only conclusion, the NS Bears are still going to suck the life out of any merge or team they're involved in 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️
