Wests Tigers have gone back to the future by naming five captains.

The Tigers on Tuesday announced James Tamou would be joined by Adam Doueihi, Luke Brooks, Ken Maumalo and new recruit Tyrone Peachey in their leadership group.

Tamou told the Herald on the weekend he was happy to walk away from the top job and let somebody younger and who will be at the club longer take the reins.
Coach Michael Maguire opted for the same model used by former coach Ivan Cleary when he was at the club and appointed Benji Marshall, Elijah Taylor, Chris Lawrence, Russell Packer and Josh Reynolds to the top role.

The Tigers have used six different skippers in the past five seasons. The new leaders were voted for by the players during a recent training camp on the Central Coast.

Most assumed Doueihi would be given the nod, given he is the best player at the club and already gone public with his hopes of one day captaining the club. The only issue with Doueihi is he will not return until midway through the year because of a knee injury.

The Tigers announcement comes a day after Newcastle confirmed Jayden Brailey and Kalyn Ponga would share the captaincy at the Knights.

Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said: “On behalf of everyone at Wests Tigers, I would like to congratulate the five players on their appointment to the club’s leadership group ahead of the 2022 season.

“It’s great to have a group that consist of players in different stages of their careers, and I look forward to working closely with this group over the coming year.”

The only player guaranteed a spot in the team can't play because he's injured.
The idea of a leadership group is OK - but 6 actual captains?
And Maumalo? He's a winger, and he's only been there since round 15 last year!

Got a feeling the players thought this one up, having 6 captains, shares out the abuse load they will all eventually cop of Madge...lol.

And Peachey, a utility, never been a captain and only just arrived!

6 actual captains is a joke. If they wanted to improve themselves and took the captain's role seriously, they'd have 2 at the most.

wonder how many WT captains are going to be dropped during the course of the season, and being the Tig-pies you just know it's going to happen ..lol. 6 just doesn't make any sense at all...

Going off last year Doueihi is the clear stand out captain. These guys have been named to find out who wants to step up and be the 2IC. Glad we have more than 1 player who is willing to own the result and drag the team towards victory.

The tigers seemed to have taken the whole "leadership group" approach and translated it into being captains. Pretty sure that is not how it works
