Where does Turbo Rate in Today??

First Grader
Has played some freakish footy in 2018, but unfortunately many mistakes have crept in due to confidence way down and generally, some poor team performances.

GROUP 1 -
The 4 best Fullbacks by a way so far imo, are Ponga Red Hot, who has been plenty involved and seems to get amongst the action with the game on the line and his threat engaging the A defender and edge is deadly....and equally good is Sheck who looked lost in 2017, has in the season opening, proven himself a far better player than I thought he was - Defence is Super and he continually revs up the troops from the back as well as scintillating attack.
Hate to call it but "Boots" Slater is again up there at 3, his support play is the best in the NRL and again - we have a General from the back directing troops and barking orders.
Not far off these at 4 is young Dufty, who adds a genuine Attacking X factor from the back and for a lightweight, has a red hot go....positionally solid and defence reasonable - interesting to see him in big games once he gets ruffled up and rag dolled - great young talent though.

GROUP 2 -
The boyd lovefest has lost momentum with decent, but average form along with Tedesco who looks lost, showing glimpses of spark and will improve as he learns his team mates.
These 2 are in the next pack alongside Johnstone who has either lit Souths up, or gone MIA.
Add Thompson who is a suprise packet at Tigers, DWZ who has moments but has not been great.
Coote would just slide in here based on some solid yet unspectacular footy

GROUP 3 -
Next line we have Wighton a handful in attack but a mistake waiting to happen, Mbye who they raved about early but has a highlight reel of 4 magical moments and 15 horrors swept under the carpet....

* Cant judge Gutho as he has had a layoff, but its fair to say as soon as he is on the field - the teams lifts, energy better, more talk, adds direction and has minimal mistakes in his game - would think based on what he brings to Eels, would slot comfortably into GROUP 2.

Turbo is somewhere at the bottom of Group 2 imo, based on what he has dished up and as a player predicted to be the NSW by many a judge - is miles off the Top group at this point....sad thing is, he has the potential to be on the Top shelf and is way off the pace, like many team mates....where do others rate him on current form as I may be a little harsh based on my high expectancy of such a talented player??

It has been very easy to blame every loss on DCE and that he is taking up too much of the cap, well the same could apply to Tom right now. IMO his form has been worse than DCE's. Plenty of Tom's errors have led directly to tries against us

Christ there are some vultures on here, yes he is out of form, but he is 21, 1 year older than Ponga and younger than Dufty whilst having achieved significantly more than both

Confidence is down atm but there are 15 other teams that would snap your hand off to sign Turbo and if he was a free agent he would go for more that what we signed him.

It constantly amazes me how peeople can never seem to raise their head out of the here and now, if a player is off 3-4 weeks he is ****, is he kills for 3 or 4 weeks he is the best player ever

Clearly the ankle is bothering him. Swap him and Dufty and TT would be up the top with Ponga. He was awful against the Roosters, but he hasn’t been too bad in the other games, he just hasn’t been anywhere near his best. He’s getting criticised harshly because of the flashes of brilliance he shows.

The biggest issue is his tall lanky frame and his propensity for ankle injuries. It’s going to be a recurring theme unfortunately, so I think we’ll be lucky to ever see him reach his true potential.

As much as he has frustrated me of late he has the xfactor. He is a very gifted and talented player. Potentially he'll be one our greatest fullbacks. But current form has him in group 2.

Ponga @ 600k or TT @ 900k - 4 months ago I wouldn't have even bothered questioning it.

My only problem with TT is that he is now chewing up 900k of our cap, but playing like 4-500k. Same problem I have with DCE chewing up 1.3m but playing like a 750 mid pricer ( I cant believe I wrote 750K is a mid pricer either).

Cest la vie.

I think Tommy is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulder this season. I do not think he has much faith in our winger as there has been so much chopping and changing and he is dealing with most of the bombs and kicks. The fact that when we are attacking he is in 2nd receiver position so much and should be running onto passes from our halves and that has just not happened much this season.

I think that Tom and DCE especially have suffered in not having a specialist pivot.

Unfortunately my avatar photo explains Turbos regular position based on his current form.....he’ll come good. Hopefully will come back from SOO with some confidence if he’s picked.

Good post mate and to me exactly what a forum that supports the eagles should discuss and I respect your putting it out there for us experts to think about

I for one like listening to thoughts that don’t get too emotive by just wanting to argue and criticise but makes me think a bit

Turbo was never going to replicate his success and dominance of under 20’s but absolutely brained it last year and gained the recognition he achieved

He is young, he is a talent ,he has been talked up by all and sundry as a talent, and as a freak talent has been heavily marked and has had game plans designed to mitigate his impact by some of the best coaches in the game

Your question is valid and no, I don’t rate him in the top 4 on current form

But Ask me in 2- 5 years and I will confidently predict that he could be one of the most influential players we have had and will eventually sit alongside our one club legends such as beaver 2v and others with his brother

Not all young players will make the transition from young gun to long term and I am yet to be convinced of Ponga Moses or Duffy

But one thing I am sure of is young Tom is the real deal and at every chance we get we should remind him of that and let him grow as a player and a man

I have been a coach ( not league - I know jack ) for a number of years of under 18 year olds at state national and international level and seen many talents fail and others succeed with very similar raw ability And makes me more proud to see young people succeed

Tom will succeed if our club creates the environment to allow him too

And thus lays the problem at this point in time

Go manly

An exciting young prospect....
Young & will learn. Will probably get to immortal status.. Will take time...

Interested to hear everyone's opinions on whether Brett Stewart at the same age in 2006 was further ahead of Tom at 21.

Of course they are different players and the Manly 2006 team was prob stronger than our 2018 teams.

Gee pretty tough to blame Tom Right for the NRL losses, he is playing ISP ... and its Tom Wright 😉 . Oh and Tommy Turbo seems to be in a bit of a funk too!

Studs up remains the benchmark.

Agree Ponga is something special. Tommy and Tedesco struggling to get the their best, but still up there. The rest are just ok.

I still wonder about TT’s ankle, he seems less agile than before. Of course this doesn’t affect his catching ability 🙂

The best fullback by some way when he's on song. He'll come back to his best some time this season but he needs to put a lot more work into his handling if he is to turn it around. With the money he's getting paid, he really should be taking more of the responsibility.

I really think a winger that can catch the ball, play some fullback and has pace will be a good foil for Turbo as they can swap positions at certain times of the day like when Snake used to swap with Robertson.

That person is Tom Wright. pick him TB!!!!!!
