Why I Think Manly Will Never Compete Long-Term Again

So the Broncos have always had the biggest nursery and the most money.

Why are they suddenly going to start doninating?
There’s a big issue with the Donkeys , the old boys have way way too much say.

They should be winning much more , but the old boys sabotage coaches who don’t fit with their mould.

Everything else there is world class , $$, training facilities , stadium , membership etc etc.

I’m just putting them up there for those reasons.

Ummm check how many juniors are in the Bulldogs 1st Grade Squad!!! Looks to me that the Bulldogs are actually buying a premiership. So much for their junior pathways??
Agree 100%, the only thing about their pathways is there's a big cheque at the end of that path for whoever wants to come and play for them

I agree manly need to invest more in grass roots but in terms of buying a premiership, of the dogs top 17 how many are actually juniors 1 -3 maybe
If you look at the Gus template it is exactly what he did at the Panthers albeit more successful this time.

Buy some established first graders to get the team competitive then wait for the kids to come through

Good post ... hold on ... did you say you listened to Kenty ....

Perhaps in the interests of Silvertails fragile mental health ... you should slightly amend your title to include the words .. "won't ever compete again, until we have ownership wealthy enough to invest in pathways"

Give the punters some hope to cling to ..
Fair....on all counts!

It is an investment which will take time much like when Gus came in at the panthers - I am talking about the ability to compete in the future

Im not really talking about “ the past “ rather how I see the situation right now.

If you go back 20 years the Panthers had only won 1 title , I’m referring to the here & now.
The Panthers got very lucky with a once in a generation player in Cleary, just like the Knights with Johns, and us with Fulton, sure there were other great players in those sides , but the ones mentioned were the icing on the cake

I think in any salary cap sport success ebbs and flows to and extent as organizations get their houses in order or have a golden generation of juniors.

Of course well run clubs are more consistently towards the top but even then there is no guarantee of success or longevity.

For Manly, its on us to get our house in order, there is no glass ceiling, we arent trapped behind some insurmountable behemoth clubs.

Agree , and there’s but many of those “ once in a generation players “ but I’d suggest with the Panthers they just invested in their youth , “ got lucky “ with Cleary Jnr , but just look at the players who have come through there , just incredible .

Agree with point 1 & 2.

But I still reckon whilst ever we have a budget minded owner , that in fact IS the glass ceiling.

I doubt Penn spends a cent more than he gets from the NRL.

Whereas those successful clubs have all the best facilities , employ the very best people , and spare no effort ( $$$$) in giving their club the best opportunity to succeed.

Fair but I would say their next premiership is closer than us
Hmmm, yes, probably odds would be in their favour presently but things move quickly in sport. Just 2-3 years ago you would have us closer, its conceiveble that if the Bulldogs don't seize the opportunity this year they tumble down a peg or two next.

Look at the Broncos, looked like beating the Panthers till late in the GF 2 years back and missed the finals last year and 2 weeks ago were in crisis.

Cowboys were top 4 two years back and are stumbling.

I think the marhins are a lot finer in the NRL then people make out.

Certainly doesnt help

I hear you but by investing in their kids like they are I believe it is a more sustainable path to ongoing success.

I mean I still see a world where we could even jag a comp this year as it is so open...but do I think we will be a consistent top 4 team? Not really unless something changes at the club and the overall approach (also to be clear I have no idea what that would be as the Bozo experiment seemed to have failed)

Certainly doesnt help
I’ve gone on ad nauseum over my one visit to the Melbourne Storm facilities ( now more than 10 years ago ) but deadset I was blown away by the money invested , how meticulous they are at every single cog being perfect , and it’s more than just having a fancy training facility.

The investment they make in every little thing ( making the sum of the whole , unbelievable) is astounding.

Yes they have Bellyache.

But even when he’s gone if they stick to their system they’ll succeed forever.

Money is no issue there , they pay for , and get the very best , of everything.

It’s why I get annoyed at most on here blaming Seibold / Mestrov for everything.

Neither are perfect I’ll grant you that , but let’s be clear what they get to work with , and what say the Storm system gets to work with , is chalk & cheese.

I would add the dolphins to the top tier they look mighty impressive on and off the field. They are also taking a lot of juniors the storm would have got.

Picked up my old mate at the Donkeys as CEO, Terry Reader . He’s a very very VERY good operator , with connections throughout Queensland.

That was a very astute signing for them.

He wants the whole shebang , remember he WAS a half owner at one point.
I don't get them Penn family? What's the point in an owning a football club and just running it into the ground and letting it be an also ran team? Where is the fun in that? Why not build a team with a chance to win. Surely that must make the club more valuable if they did want to sell.

Their approach reminds of that old Baseball movie with Charlie Sheen "Major League".

The Penn family really do shxt me.....

Yes but remember , they are doing really nicely.

Bought the leagues club for a song and sold off the land ( I think for a very tidy profit ).

Have this year sold more memberships that ever before .

Have sold out every home game except that 6pn Friday.

Have all their costs covered by the NRL.

Whilst I’m sure they’d love success , as purely a financial proposition I’d say it’s going very well.

In the 34 completed seasons since the introduction of the salary cap ... Manly have made the finals on 22 occasions ... or 64% of the time ..

Playing in 7 Grand finals ... winning 3 ...

Granted the past decade has been sketchy ... with only 3 finals appearances ..
The Penn decade
