Using your logic NO club should sign a player beyond 2 years as we don't know what their worth will be.
What clubs sign 32+ year old players to deals longer than 2 years?

Storm and Roosters didn't do that with Smith, Cronk or Slater - and they all negotiated and signed their final contract at the end of their expiring contracts. Also they were all at some point recognised as the best player in the competition... DCE, despite being paid as such for the last 6 years, has not.

It is just not good business to re-sign DCE now. He is already signed here for the next 2 years on over $1.2m per season, so as you said, there is no chance we will extend him now for 2 years on $500k. But of course... at the end of 2023 when his current contract expires that might be much closer to his market value for 2024-2025.

Just my opinion

I would imagine Jamie Humpfreys will be DCE's successor, not Latu. he is 18 right?. Latu will be a 6 won't he?
Not too sure how old Jamie is , probably 19 next season and likely to play 20 "s or Black Town . If he does come on well , hard to see him staying around if D C E is retained post 2023 however . Just the brief highlights that i have seen , Jamie looks a very tidy and smart footy player but not sure how his defence measures up. Can "t be too bad if Manly want to upgrade him and give him some exposure to more specialist training in or with the main squad . Latu Fainu looks like a star in the making , will still eventually have to prove himself and i think only 17 next year but should be evident quite soon how good he is or can be with Manly and the right path way

With NSW now open, surely Fainu's case will now be brought forward, when he was stood down it was virtually the start of the pandemic, you would have to think he would be very near the top of the queue and be the first cab of the rank to be called. It's been a hell of a ride for him and hopefully a character building one for Manase.
yes not sure - I thought it was mid next year based on no lock down etc - someone on here will surely know

June or July 22, surely not. It's getting beyond a joke now !!
It's true. You are very late to the party on this topic mate.it has been discussed ad nauseum His trial date has been set for then and there is no chance of the system being de-clogged so it wold be moved up. His only chance of playing FG next year would be for the NRL to relax the NFSD policy, and that is not going to happen.

Have been following events, the trial was supposed to of been June/July this year, but with covid they shut the courts down. So, now Fainu has to wait another 8mths. tic toc !! thanks 40yae.

Broncos signed Renolds for 3yrs he is 32

He doesn't turn 32 until July next year... Also he signed that deal for about $650k per season (around half what we are paying DCE!!) starting next year, not starting in 2 years time.

Again... I won't have any problems if 2023 comes around and we can negotiate DCE's re-signing, on its own merits, at an appropriate price.
He said last year when talk of extension was about he new it wouldn't be on his current contract rate, probably the fittest players at the club and if Shu goes to 6 in 23 it would be good to have a experienced 7 beside him and start blooding a new half in 25 ,Latu will be 21 not sure about Humphries

If it's a good deal for the club? All depends on the fine print. What I did find interesting was how our CEO worded it.

"Daly is contracted for two more years and, right now, he is keen to continue playing beyond that," Humphreys said.

“Who knows how long he will play?

Way I look at it. Club see premiership window being in next 3 years.

It's not a time they want great change.

It almost sounds like DCE doesn't even know if he will want to play in 3 years time.

It's the Cam Smith contract, let's just talk at the end of each year see where your at, but if you play it's with us, and it's for this much.

If Man has a club option. It's just common sense, and a way to further galvanize to glory.

Watching with interest the effect on The Vermin this year, losing Renolds to the Broncs. You could argue it to be a Litmus test on how we would be effected in losing DCE in a similar manner and he being replaced by and untried half. I'm predicting Souths to go backwards.

At 32 years of age DCE is playing as good as ever
He hardly misses any games due to injury and he does not seem to have any chronic injuries
Age is just a number to DCE

DCE is a resilient player who works hard and I do rate him as one of the best number 7's running around at the moment. He is fit and is still quick IMO he's got 2 or 3 years left in him. It would be nice to keep one of our greats until the end of his career rather than what we did with Bozo and Vautan.

DCE signs extension deal despite Manly’s front-office dramas

By Christian Nicolussi

April 4, 2022 — 7.20pm

Manly’s front-office dramas have not been enough to stop Daly Cherry-Evans’s signing off on a two-year contract extension.

Cherry-Evans produced one of the finest kicking games in the modern era against Canberra on Saturday night, a fantastic morale boost which came just 24 hours after chief executive Stephen Humphreys resigned.

Sea Eagles owner Scott Penn remains a huge fan of Cherry-Evans and made it known he would not be letting him go to a rival, including newcomers Redcliffe where his father spent time with the club and where DCE started out as a child.

Plenty of Dolphins fans would agree the mooted $1.2m a year set aside for Newcastle ace Kalyn Ponga would be better spent on a fit and firing playmaker like Cherry-Evans.

The Herald understands Cherry-Evans put pen to paper on a fresh two-year deal late Monday, but with no CEO in place, the club will need a few extra days to rubber-stamp the contract from their end.

Both parties are open to stretching the deal out to as long as four years provided Cherry-Evans’ fitness and form warrant it. By the same token, the Queensland and Kangaroos halfback incumbent is also prepared to walk away from any deal if he loses his love for the game.

Cherry-Evans conceded his next deal would be south of the seven figures he has collected annually.

Penn told the Herald on Monday: “We’re well down the path with Daly, things might slow up a little bit with what has happened [with Humphreys], but we’re very close.

“He was outstanding for us the other night, and even though he’s coming into the back end of his career, he continues to show he has plenty to offer.

“We’ve had positive dialogue all the way through and he wants to be a one-club player, he’s happy on the northern beaches so the deal makes sense for both of us.”

Cherry-Evans inked an eight-year $10m deal after reneging on the Gold Coast Titans. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart quipped after the 25-6 loss the other night that Penn should place flowers on the grave of club legend Bob Fulton every day, just as a thank you for enticing Cherry-Evans to ditch the Titans for Manly all those years ago.

He told the Herald last month about his hopes for a two-year deal - he will be 36 by the end of the 2025 season.

“I not only want to keep playing, I want to keep playing to win, and I see us winning here at Manly,” Cherry-Evans said.

“There’s a core group of players already re-signed, including the coach we love and trust, and it excites me we’re in a really good position to succeed.

“My family are also very happy on the northern beaches, they love going to school, and we have a great group of friends.

“I feel really lucky when my name gets attached to other clubs because if I’m not playing good footy, there’s no way other clubs would want to touch you, in particular a start-up club with someone like Wayne Bennett there who I have so much respect for.

“Things would need to go really south at Manly for me to contemplate going anywhere else.

“I’m 33 now, all those Queensland boys like [Cooper] Cronk and [Johnathan Thurston] played at the peak of their powers until their mid-thirties. I’ll never put a deadline on it.

Contracts put deadlines on it, but I’ll train as hard as I can, compete on game day; the love will always be there, it’s just a matter of whether I keep up.”
