New signings to be announced #nextweek

Oh BTW Klemmer is still not out of the picture as his Managers request for a contract extension was rejected by the dogs. I hear he asked for an additional $150K a season to stay- that would make him a $650K a year player....the manager has been making calls but he has already signed a "if I leave dogs I will go to Manly" document. Not much space to move because if he goes elsewhere Manly have a legal claim? Guess he will stay at Dogs.....
how good would it be if we got klemmer and thompson! do you reckon we have cap space? 650k for klemmer thompson couldnt be on more than 350-400k!

I hate to say it , but whatever signings we are getting will be at best a 30+ Thompson (possibly sic), and maybe a few fringe or better 1st graders for depth.

Tom and Jake are now on premier money (much more than snake and skivvy), upgrade to Walker, and Green extending possibly with a bit of extra coin, AFB increase (deserved), Hastings on full price, DCE has his ratchet clause, Uate may still be subsidised I can't remeber, and then there is the rest of the team with god knows what upgrade clauses for appearances etc.

I will be surprised if we do actually land another 30 year old backrower tbh.

To get a big name, we need to let more than Myles (who knows if we are subsidising this year) go.
As mentioned a number of times Thompson is 29.....born 24 / 8 1988 so we're not getting a 30+ player! We're getting a player in the peak of his career!

Rising stars on the cheap? Taking up hardly any cap space or any space at all really.@:D

Even if the money from Stewart & Matai is taken up by player upgrades - the cap is up about $1 million- to over $9million. we should really have $1million to spend. On new players.
The cap increase is not really extra cash, most players contracts these days are a percentage of the cap. So if the cap rises, the salary per player will rise but the extra money doesn't change. If they have 10% spare cash at the moment, after the rise it is still only 10%. The benefit would be negligible and would be cancelled out by the fact that every other club got the same increase therefore the player values increased and you will have to spend more for the same players than you would have pre increase. Add to that the significant and deserved increase in salary to Tom T and Jake and that Snake and Matai cash is dwindling. Although I would say we have more than our share of cheapies however Siro, Uate and the like will all be looking for more coin soon.

Very true and also - this type of player is that quicker , lanky, backrow type who has is a certain speed and strength that will not diminish all that much if - at all.
An old back - say a James Roberts type who's game is based on speed is a "Do not touch " at 30+, as his key strength comes back to the field....but a rugged backrower with good pace at 29 is not an issue....in fact I see this bloke as in Improved player in recent years.

Luke Lewis is a nice example of your point, I recall a few runs this year to the tryline (including one against us) that proved he's still got it. Thompson is younger, more mobile and hasn't had any knee or leg injuries to suggest he might slow down either. I really hope to see him in Maroon and White

Just remember that even if a player is announced on a 3 year deal worth 3mil that

1. It does not mean the club is paying 3 mil as this figure will often include 3rd party arrangements
2. Player wages are not paid in a linear equal fashion. They might be front loaded / back ended to fit in with an existing cap.
3. This figure could also include potential rep bonus payments which may or may not happen
4. If the player has come from another club who knows how much the other club might will be paying

In short there would only be a few people who have any idea what the clubs current cap position is

Agree also was lucky enough to talk to Dennis Moore when he was on the coaching staff and he said balancing the cap is often about 2 to 3 years in advance rather than the current year

That type of factual approach takes all the fun out of Silvertails.

I preferred it when people aggressively wondered how manly could pay dce 10 million per annum within a 7 million cap.
