On this day in history

The year is 1978 and on the 16th September the seemingly invincible Manly Sea Eagles are about to play their 5th game in 3 weeks.
The Grand Final against old nemesis the Cronulla Sharks.
The Sharks had beaten Manly in the 1st semi 3 weeks prior and since , the Sea Eagles had drawn with parramatta then beat them in a mid week replay, followed by yet another brutal victory against Wests.
At 3pm today 39 years ago these mighty warriors ran out to play.....
Yet another draw and a replay to follow 3 days later after an 11 all result.
I'll watch this game today in tribute to our greatest ever Sea Eagles !!

I am biased!! To me this is our greatest ever team and best premiership win!! This team went through so much to win in 1978 and it was the pinnacle of a team that won four premierships in 7 years and was the envy of the league. I started supporting the team in 1975 and for a kid it was a magical time to support the Sea Eagles. Legendary players like my hero Wombat Eadie, Bomb thrower, Max Krillich, Igor Randall, Ian Martin, Johny Gibbs, Steve Martin and so many more. That team supplied seven players for the Kangaroo tour that year.

The Grand final was a tense game. The Sharks were fresh and looked fitter and stronger for most of that game but they were up against a team with such a strong will and desire. It could have gone either way to be honest. The replay was all Manly, tough, composed and in the first half they blew the fishies away and defended that lead and won a memorable premiership.

The Sheridan stand rocked that day and my earliest and happy memories of watching Manly were in that old grand stand at the SCG. Wonderful times for thoses of us lucky to be there!!!

And in 1972 Manly Warringah Sea Eagles got their first win in a first grade Grand Final.....

Great work EDT.
I didn't realise that was today.
I was there and it was bloody hot.
I was just a kid and actually became a Manly supporter that day because all around me were going for Easts.
Best decision of my life !!

Even read something the other day where Sorensen the Cronulla prop was quoted as calling it the corrupt Manly comp or something like thar

History doesn't recognise whinge fests @skull61.
And it's riddled with them.
It just records winners.
John Gray is a casualty of bias towards Manly.
Not.
Hartley cost him his only GF appearance by sending him off against the worms in the replayed semi.
Anyway I take great delight in the sorensons of this world.
Be they Souffs, Wests, sharks or parasites, that we have caused them such lingering pain and angst.
A beautiful symphony !!

The blokes who played in that 5 game streak are all premiers in my view. Not all could patch it up for the grand final or replay, but they got us there.
