I resented Girdler when he called us flat-track bullies last season as we headed into the finals. But to honest, he was correct. We are 2nd tier. Easily the best team in the 2nd tier but still miles away from the top-3. Our defence, discipline and demeanour are all lacking.
Yep no where near the top 2-3 sides and won’t be this year.

4th or 5th possibly , and out in straight sets again.

Exactly the same issues as previous years , a fair dinkum hooker is the biggest one.

Croker was woeful. Api pulled his pants down and spanked him. Croker never ran from dummy half once... now mind you were were always coming out from our own line but he offers nothing and his service is terrible... Cardinal sin as a dummy half is to stand and pass.. ball must go straight from the deck... he is terrible

What happened in the finals last year and what happened tonight has little bearing on what happens in September.

Sure we have plenty of work to do and areas that need improving but we are a young team and will continue to develop.

Penrith were too good tonight but no time to panic

How many times did we get caught without someone at marker. What was that?

Wasn’t quite straight sets last year but it sure felt like it. Des has his work cut out for him.

Tough game, Penrith very disciplined and straight. Manly off the pace, some dodgy reffing in the last 20 but wouldn’t have changed the result.

Gotta get more 6 agains, and stop giving them away, it was relentless. I thought it was a penalty in your own 40? We got a 6 again instead of a penalty at one stage in the second half?

Worst game from croker in a while, it really stuffed us when Lawton went down. We need variety in dummy half.

It’s only rd 1, and im actually not very bothered by it as we typically start like this.

The result is short term, but our long-term problems to solve are;

1. Lack of physicality in our backs often creates a fatigue-cycle in our game. We start fast, forwards get tired, backs get involved (too late) and get dominated, forwards then get the ball flat-footed, get more tired etc.
2. Everyone very uncompetitive in the play the ball. No struggle in the play the ball compared to penrith.
3. Forwards not mobile enough (at this stage) to disrupt the good teams. Schuster will help (Jake rant is below)
4. Defence overall bad but showed more scramble than normal at times, also had moments of high-physicality
5. HOOKER

And again,
6. Jake has been out of position since the last Tbaz season. Why is he still playing lock?? He really has to shift back to prop, his reputation has prevented a neccessary change for a long time. (Or he needs to get into shape)

Would like to bring Davey in at lock, Sipley to bench, Jake to prop, Paseka to replace Taupau as prop. If we start to see a pattern over the next few weeks i’d like to drop Keppie or Taupau for a young prop. Also, can we use Segeyaro?

Maybe not next week but if we start to see a pattern for the first month
4. Koula over Harper (change this week? Harper kind of flat-lining since mid-2021)
8. Jake Trbojevic (change this week)
10. Taniela Paseka
11. Huamole Olakauatu
12. Ethan Bullemore
13. Andrew Davey
16. Sipley
14 and 17 up for grabs

They were just too good, and have won 20 straight out there. We had no possession but defended well which means the structures are working. Just completely gassed in the end, so no drama’s for me. They would’ve put 50+ points on most sides with the mountain of possession they had. We always start badly, so onward and upward. Still very confident of a big year that we will build into.

It’s only rd 1, although the main problems I (still) see are;

1. No physicality in our backs creates a fatigue-cycle in our game. We start fast, forwards get tired, backs get involved (too late) and get dominated, forwards then get the ball flat-footed, get more tired etc. Then after a 10-15 minute dour period they spark to life for a period until we either run away with the game or get tired again.

Not so fast. 1st game of the year. Penwiff got the rub of the green a lot. They outplayed us. Love Koula, but didn’t see Harper do much wrong. His time will come.
