And that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
In the 10 years since he backflipped on the Titans, the only thing he has won (outside of State of Origin and other rep duties) is a Clive Churchill medal in a grand final we lost, and he was lucky to get that.
I get why we were desperate to re-sign him (Foran was already gone, and the panic set in), but in hindsight surely we would have been better to have let him walk. We could have had another halfback - or two or three other halfbacks - in that time for the same amount of premierships: zero, zilch, nada. We might have even been more successful as a club. But of course, we'll never know.
His best quality in his time with us has been his durability. He has been remarkably free of injury. He's won us a handful of games with field goals, and he's always been good for a 40/20. We've made the finals a few times, although apart from that one grand final we've never looked like serious contenders. And that's pretty much all we've got to show for it.
He will walk into a stacked Roosters team next year and they will likely be more successful than we will. They might even win Cherry a "fairytale" grand final. Hurray. He can then retire a Roosters legend.
I probably won't be thrilled if that happens. But I will still be thrilled his era with Manly is finally over. We weren't able to build anything with him, so we may as well try to build something without him.
