The obsession with signing a big name

Do you really know what I think feathered friend ?
I think Big Is BEAUTIFUL

She must have tremendous back pain
At 29 years of age and playing his best football in his career he wants a long and lucrative contract and this is why he is linked to us as the Dragons are not coming to his party .
Big match players command big money .
We need mongrel in the back row and Joel would be a great premiership winning investment for us .
You just said $450k,is he getting that or big money, because big money today is upwards of $750K,maybe you aren't sure what big really is? 😉

You are right . 450k is not big money for his quality of play and this is why his manager wants to get a better offer for him

Your infatuation with this player is reminiscent of your gushing endorsements of James the Jet.
If he's as good as you say we'll have to refer to him as Joel the Jackhammer.
I could not have picked a better name for him myself . Very good . I like it 🙂

smokin, we were going nowhere, until the club decided on focusing on one, to two blue chip players per season, starting with the acquisition of Ben Kennedy, and going on from there.

It's always ok to surround yourself with quality support players, but it's those key leadership players (doesn't have to be old guys to fit that bill as well) that keep strong teams, up the top.

Well im obsessed because we need two more gun signings to win the comp. Im confident everytime manly play and will back them to win any game, but we need these 2 gun signings.

Your right. We don't just buy a big name player for the sake of "it "
WE BUY A BIG NAME PLAYER FOR THE SAKE OF WINNING ANOTHER COMP !!! 😉

Newsflash - Big name players is a good thing - but make sure you keep a good "team" over a good player :wait:

Hence the post that states - We got BK.....Lyon who added the missing ingredients at THAT time in THOSE certain position for THOSE reasons...
It is like this.....
Step 1 - If you have quality backs - you buy a QUALITY forward...
Step 2 - What is missing in the forwards?
Step 3 - Grunt....Size ....Mobility....experience - then you find WHO best fits THAT hole.
Example) If you have a top shelf hooker that FITS with the team - don't buy Cameron Smith because he is a great player...

Reverse this theory with the backs and you get the system....@

The point of Smokin Joe's post is about losing quality juniors, to secure big names players for the sake of it....aptly titled - "Obsession"

I disagree, the team needs to function better to win the comp.
Of course quality players can play a role in improving a team, but at the end of the day (and in the morning too) it's a team game. Jarryd Hayne is the epitome of a gun, and his team went backwards.

Fair enough but add a M Moylan and another hard arse backrower and we'll shake the comp next year . I still think we need this to go up a level .Manly has a different culture to most clubs , players come here and excel , say leave us and go down hill mostly anyway with the odd exception. Thats why i think we are missing that final ingredient . I'll guarantee one thing , we will be a little different in a couple of positions next season, bozo will make sure of it.

Probably a case of horses for courses in regard to trying to get the balance right with maintaining a solid nucleus . retaining and developing promising juniors and the important strategic recruiting and this would just not apply to Manly . Also every season and era is different of course . Right now it seems that there could be at least up to six or seven of the present 20"s squad who may be i st grade standard soon and i am sure that these have already been acknowledged by Manly officials . The fact that only Turbo Tom and [ Bainbridge to a lesser extent ] are the only members of the 2015 20 "s squad in Manly's top side now and Price at Black Town , is really no fault of the club . Knight , Demetriou , Ramien and others have or were given every subsequent opportunity but came up short for what ever reason . The present Manly side has undergone a major rebuilt recently and sadly but obviously with a bit more consistency and discipline could have even perhaps been the Storm"s opponent this weekend , it was just that type of season . Just like any other of the successful Manly eras' with title wins , this current team does seem to need something extra to be good enough for a title win , part of it can definitely come from with in the present squad , but as is generally suggested , maybe just one or two key additions could make the difference . [ but i am not sure with Thompson"s reported 450 grand price tag and Moylan at 700 grand , as i am not sure if this is sustainable ] . The important balance can still be maintained however , and i am sure the current juniors who prove good enough will be retained and again the strong nucleus of the side is there . Again the unfortunate aspect is that with maybe just one more win to make the top four and then with some better consistency and discipline , even this current Manly side could have been facing off against the Storm this week .
