The obsession with signing a big name

So he is more of a Shane Rodney,Joe Galuvao,Mark Shipway type of signing?
No one fcks around with Joel Joe .
He is the enforcer we need to complement Kappow , Jake , AFB and all the other young forwards .

The big difference is the type of big money signing needed.
When Kennedy was signed mid 2000, it was not just a quality player but a true leader who was needed.
When Lyon was signed it was painfully obvious Manly were short on class it wide.
I am all for the sentiments of grow your own....I believe there will be 4 or more of the current U20’s who will make a top grade debut by 2019 - this means if all money is spent on outsiders, they will line up at another club.
Then add the younger crop 16-17 year olds wearing the Manly colours - there MUST be smart recruiting to ensure we keep our best at Manly.
Have posted before we need only 1-2 big signings, and it’s quality over quantity the requirement.
There is so much talent coming through it’s again- pick the key areas and be smart - not just buy big name players for the sake of it.
Your right. We don't just buy a big name player for the sake of "it "
WE BUY A BIG NAME PLAYER FOR THE SAKE OF WINNING ANOTHER COMP !!! 😉

I consider Joel as good as any back rower in the comp in terms of the aggression , work ethics and impact he brings into a team .
Very under rated player IMO
I agree he is a good player, that is not the point I was making,I am saying that I don't think he is a big name signing...Mau,Moeroa,Yeo,Jackson,W.Graham,Frizzell,Sims,Kaufusi,Whitehead,Crighton,Cordner,Proctor,Gillett,Hess,Harris,Mannering,Sironen,Papalii,Taukeiaho could all be considered better players or at least equal. He is one of many good second rowers not an elite big name.I would consider Mau,Cordner,Gillett,Crighton,Harris and potentially Hess as big names from that group(players at the top of the tree)

Like most things on this forum the truth lies in the middle ground

To be successful clubs need bring through young stars, pick up and optimize some bargain buys and add a little bit of stardust with a big name signing or two

I think we are on the cusp with some great talent coming through but most of which is a couple of seasons off, A big name or two can make us premiership threats next year

The obsession is because we brought the best player on the market for about 5 years running the reaped the rewards.

Kennedy
Kite
Lyon
Orford
Bell
Perry
Galuvao

The failed Vialecki was a disappointment but the signings of Ballin, TRex, Rodney and Wolfman proved enormous.

There are only so many elite players you can afford,we have Tom,Dylan,Daly,Marty and Jake. When you look at the donkeys and go "who are their elite players?" the list is not massive...McCullough is close,Gillett,McGuire maybe,Milford,Roberts maybe,Boyd. The rest are all quality players that they can afford through having access to large TPa's,we don't have that luxury and have to be choosy where we spend our big bucks.I am not against buying big names but we don't pay money because they are big names, they need to be a strategic pick up.

Yeah you make a good point @Smokin Joe

With the Turbo's and Walker and Marty etc etc we are starting from a stronger place. The Stewarts, Choc and Matai etc were not yet stars when our buying spree began.

Just as long as we don't lose the promising players in our Holden Cup team because we've run out of money buying a grass-is-always-greener-at-another-club player.

I don't know how many times you have seen Joel play but I can tell you from what I have seen from Joel up against Mau Cordiner Gillett Harris and Hess he never comes second best . At 450 grand a season currently at St George he would also be on similar money .

All for building from within, and we are doing well in that department. However, I will go back to 1987. Kevin Ward = Premiership. Back further to the 70's, it was the Branigan's, Lowe's, Reilly's that made the difference. With the current squad, it is just one, possibly 2 big signings that take us from a strong side to a great side.

Don't get your feathers in a knot feathered friend .
Manly have always followed the God father$$$ premiership winning formular .

We need an impact 2nd Rower for next year. Don't really care where they come from. If that is a junior guy coming through and stepping up, a cheap addition proving his worth or a big name doing what he does it really doesn't matter to me.
To be honest, I would be happy to see Green sent to NZ for his final big money contract and have Hastings or Wright step up into 5/8 so we can bring in a hard hitting and running 2nd Rower. But I would also be just as happy to keep Green if we can still have a hard running back rower. Siro is the ball player, we need a hard runner to compliment. Lane could even be just that!

I think there needs to be a balance. Although to develop the next Menzies or Choc we need time. If they are good enough manly will open a window for them

IF the reports are even true that we want him,I don't think he is moving sideways,he wants more money and a longer contract.I have seen him play probably 50-60 matches so have a fair idea of his ability.....

And look where our buying spree ended up when Des left....You have to think ahead when it comes to managing contracts,I and most want a grand final every year, but I also want us to be successful consistently and not having years where we are sorting out financial messes, others think differently and don't mind having a couple of down years after a strong couple of years(as long as those people don't then bag the club for taking that option and then complaining in the down years). But yeah, you are right,we had a core that Des identified as the future and he strategically brought in a couple of stars to help in the development along with bargain buys, slightly different situation than 2018.

At 29 years of age and playing his best football in his career he wants a long and lucrative contract and this is why he is linked to us as the Dragons are not coming to his party .
Big match players command big money .
We need mongrel in the back row and Joel would be a great premiership winning investment for us .

Yep,I agree and Bella/Roberts in early 90's and Carroll,Hill,Gillespie in mid 90's.We have picked up Taupau/Walker last year and will probably look to add another one,but needs to be strategic.I am not saying you only rely on juniors,no club no matter how big the nursery can do that,I just think we are travelling ok and not seeing any areas that other teams are stronger than us that urgently require an immediate upgrade. If we get Thompson I am happy with what we bring next year.
