Manly winger Jorge Taufua faces up to six months on the sideline after undergoing surgery for a ruptured Achilles following Saturday's loss to Wests Tigers.

The Sea Eagles confirmed Taufua had already gone under the knife in a bid to be available for the start of the 2021 season.

Rookie Josh Schuster has also been ruled out for the remainder of the year with the club to consult a specialist after he suffered a high-grade syndesmosis injury and Dylan Walker (foot) is unlikely to be pushed to return given that Manly's finals hopes are gone.

In better news, Reuben Garrick (shoulder) could return before the regular season finishes while Tom Trbojevic (hamstring) is progressing well and is also a chance to make it back.

What’s the Brookie playing surface like atm? Don’t want to upset people but an achillies, and ankle injury, walkers foot earlier, I’m sure there are more. It’s an honest question, how is the surface looking? Am I right in saying the public can access the ground during the week?

Yeah I took a stroll across the hallowed turf a few weeks back and did my ACL and then broke my foot while hobbling off the field  @:D

Is there truth to it that the public can access it through the week? Can’t recall where I heard that. Probably here. Lol

With Horhay being anywhere from 6-9 months out AND unlikely to ever be as “ good” as he was ( and we all know the game has moved past him ) do we have to waste whatever his salary is on a player that’s never likely to play again , is that how the system works ??

Yes I know there’s medical retirement but that’s only for the glamour clubs not the **** kickers like us.

I can’t blame Jorge for getting his last dollar but it’s a ****ty system isn’t it.

Yes but go kick a footy with your mate and a very irate groundsman will come out from near the scoreboard telling you to get out and turn the sprinkler systems on wherever you'r standing if you don'y yield to his requests.

I can't recall anyone other than Edrick Lee being injured from the opposition in the 4 games I have been to at Brookie this year.

We have had different trainers over the years in question but I think its time for an investigation into this by the club. Maybe our warm ups are just ****.

Its well documented injuries occur more under fatigue

Poor ball security, lack of game management has manly under the pump quite a lot. frantic as opposed to composed is a pretty fair assesment of our team

Our game is built on grunt and effort due to a lack of options, which also takes its toll

i think tom has too much pressure and this doesnt help him .
He is the only man .

We are playing both of the turbos into an early retirement due to the reliance on them. Our 6, 7, and 9 do not bring enough to a first grade footy team
We need to get smarter as a footy team on field .

Consevation of energy is what the elite playmakers understand and look to provide there team. Getting them out of trouble through attacking kicks is vital in big games and what forward packs hold dear

Our backs are used as battering rams in our own half as opposed to attacking weapons. We get smashed in our own quarter after kicks very often.

Not sure if this adds to our injury woes but its an observation and it cant help. Many look reluctant to cop another hiding and that can sometimes lead to being manhandled

You know, apart from Turbo with his hammy which is a soft tissue injury, the majority of the injuries we've copped this year ... Walker's broken foot, Jorge's Achilles, Garrick's shoulder, Schuster's ankle, Suli's foot, Thommo's ankle, Elliot's ACL ... they are all nothing more than the chances taken in what is a full on contact sport. I don't think they are the result of poor training or anything like that, they just can happen in a sport like rugby league.

Unfortunately we just seem to have copped a spate of these injuries which are really no one's fault.

Very true

As a question. Do you think our backs get gang tackled more than most. If they get the ball its often in traffic

A lot of lower leg injuries seems to occur when multiple defensive players are pushing in different directions and the lower leg stays stationary

When runners are trying to evade on the outside less defenders are in on the action

We play tight and our outside runners run into walls and are held up , rather than half gaps and hit the deck quickly with legs tackles due to desperate defence

In saying that i think suli got injured when he had clean ball and beat a man on the outside, but its still a theory

We notice our players injuries more because we pay more attention to our team than others.

That said, we have suffered a lot of injuries this season & the perception is also in previous seasons but if you take Tom & Walker out of the equation, I don't think we've suffered more injuries than other teams over that period.

Tom's issue is a recurring (dare I say it) chronic injury that obviously requires specialist treatment.

When you look at what has kept Walker off the field injurywise:

8 weeks was due to letting Curtis Scott punch him in the head until his eye socket fractured.

The rest has been due to his ankle, which I believe is all related to the initial break he suffered in the PNG game.

I cant recall if the broken hand he got from punching a door kept him off the field or if it healed during the pre-season?

The rest of the time I recall him being off the field was the 9 weeks he was stood down for until his DV case went to court.

Actually yes and I'll tell you why. Other teams seem to go to the edges more when running the ball back from a kick or during early tackle hit up's when forwards are lumbering back onside. Its also why a lot of other teams seem to make more ground than we do. Our backs have this habit of trying to run towards the middle of the field. For argument sake, someone like Reuben Garrick would be far better off trying to use his pace out wide on returns or hit ups than he would trying to run through a wall of 110+ kg defenders. Yet time and time again, where does he and our other outside backs run to? The middle of the field where they often get smashed and pushed back.

As I said in another thread ... players need to be smarter. If you've got a wall of forwards in front of you spread out across the middle of the field, yet you're opposite backs are questionable defenders with average pace, you don't run into the forwards where you'll be gang tackled, especially if you're a 90 kg outside back. There is tough and there is smart. Outside backs need to be tough as well as forwards, but ours need to be a lot smarter in how they play.

I say it's all a conspiracy. I reckon Uncle Nick has paid someone to toss brown paper bags on the ground and our players get injury by tripping over them.

I think the issue is that for Manly this has been happening for several years and we are often one of the teams that use most of the 30 usually because of injury. Its not so much regarding what the injury rate is at one specific time, its the overall injury rate during the season and what top rated players are out of the game for extended periods. If injuries are constantly disrupting a side, cohesion is detrimentally destabilising. This could explain the high mistake rate and poor defensive patterns because of that reduction of cohesion
