Get Cleary

Ivan Cleary is contracted to end of 2027 at Penrith, and if Manly wants to win another premiership each decade since the 70’s, I believe Ivan will possibly achieve it, so they have to go after him with 'wallets open'.

If Manly sign Ivan from 2028 for 5 years, that will give Ivan two years to achieve the goal of a premiership each decade for Manly, but not only that decade. Ivan will attract players who want to win a premiership.

Why would Ivan want to sign and coach with Manly?

1) Nathan may want to play in the English Super League to be with Mary from 2028, so that would make it an easier decision for him, or even for Nathan to choose Rugby360, which if it actually eventuates, will be massive.

2) Imagine Ivan coaching Joey Walsh, Anotoni Large and his brother Ashton, along with Lehi and Koula, along with others he woud develop and attract to the club! We have a base, we just need the right coach and support staff.

3) Ivan is Manly, he started his career at Manly, so he understands the culture of Manly, and he will attract the type of players that embody the Manly culture.

Ivan Cleary, as coach looked in all sorts of trouble after round 12 this year and yet he still managed to instil a calm manner in the team and no panic. Penrith then went on a 9 game winning streak and while Penrith lost in controversial circumstances with the ‘Harry Grant Dive’ against the Storm, unless there are major injuries for Penrith, and Yeo returns from injury, I can actually see 5 premiership wins in a row.

If the Penn's really wanted to build value in the brand, they have to invest in the future, and Cleary, having played for Manly, would absolutely have all on the Northern Beaches embraced in membership and those who have suppported Manly outside of the Beaches.

The coaches who have won Manly prenierships have all been ex Manly players, and 'Hard arse bastrards'. Ron Willey, Cranky Frank, Bozo and Des, however, we need a change, as the culture of the playing group has changed throughout the NRL and we need someone who can embrace that and who has also played for and embraced Manly, and Ivan Cleary answers all those questions.

This will never happen. He said on a podcast that he’ll want to finish strong and end his career around 2028

Aren't we done with Tigers rejects?

More chance of getting Bellamy.....unfortunately will be none of those options, more likely Ennis with an approach for Ballin is the reality moving forward

Why not throw stupid money at Bellamy and Cleary? Get one of them and Penn would recoup most of it through increased membership.
And if unsuccessful? Give Ange a call. He is a winner.
Seriously though, I would love Penn have the courage to appoint the Walker Brothers. You'd never know what to expect. Now, unfortunately, we do.

Eels already tried with the biggest contract in history for a coach but Bellamy denied it.

You cannot go past Jack Gibson's saying of what wins premierships...

"To win a championship, you've got to have a nucleus of five or six real tough, hard competitors,"

Manly 96 - Toovey, Carroll, Terry Hill, Ridge, Hoppa, Hasler, Beaver

Manly 2008 - Matai, Choc, Snake, Gift, Kite, Ballin, Killer, Orford

Manly 2011 - Matai, Choc, Snake, Gift, Kite, Ballin, Killer, Foz

Manly 2017 - 2021 - Jurbo, Dylan Walker, AFB, Api, Joel Thompson, Turbo, Tapau

Manly 2022 - 25 - Jurbo, Turbo, Ola

The players I left out is in no way meant out of disrespect or diminishing their contribution, but purely on what I based on maybe what Gibson's definition might mean.

I think if we had a decent coach during the Barrett years we would have snagged at least 1 premiership. If we had Cleary as the our coach during those years, Id say the chances might have been pretty good. But its easy to say in hindsight

Manly 1972-73 - Jones, Reilly, Hamilton, Fulton, Randall, ONeill, Eadie, Martin
Manly 1976-78 - Eadie, Fulton, Martin, Randall, Krilich, Harvey, Thompson
Manly 1987 - Lyons, Hasler, Vautin, Gibbs, Ward, Cleal

Cleary is an ok coach in an excellent system, with a bunch of potential future immortals in his squad.

If he came to Manly we would improve, but he wouldn't make us into the Panthers

Cleary is still a few grades up on Seibold, but the big thing bringing in a coach with great success like your Bellamy, Cleary and Bennett.....the elite players are far more chance of considering coming also, along with quality juniors who seem to want to play in the winning systems.
Always felt a bit the same with Bennett in the sense he adopted teams with 10+ origin players and more International players than any other NRL team....still a great bloke at having a super bond with his players and smart enough to keep his game plans simple, yet allowing the Langer and Lockyer types to add their own individual brilliance....thing is they "wanted" to play for him, which is the Number 1 importance from a coaching perspective.

It's the only way.

Next pick would be Robinson from The Chooks.

Any other change of coach is a waste of time.

Srko wouldn't mess around with these untried hacks.

Robinson and Ciraldo should be on the hit list too.

I have nothing against Seibold personally and I am sure he is a lovely fella, however, 'Hard arse bastard coaches' win premierships and the nice guys are all down the bottom.

Personally I think Toov's was just steamrolled for whatever reason and I found it sad. In all reality, aside from a few poor refereeing decisions, he should have been a premiership winning coach in his first year.

We won 7 of his 10 matches as coach, including a 44-14 win over grand finalists Broncos in round 21.

But its a results driven business.
